All About the Western Pool & Spa Show


The Western Pool and Spa Show is the premiere show for the pool industry which is held every year in March at the Long Beach Convention Center. This year the dates are Thursday March 15th through Saturday the 17th. This is a great place to take classes and hear industry leading speakers give world class seminars. You can also walk the Exhibit Hall floor every afternoon and admission to the Exhibit Hall is free! You must per-register and be in the pool industry to gain entry. The show is not open to the general public.

The seminars and classes are the best way to increase your knowledge of every aspect of the pool industry. There are classes from basic chemistry to advance chemistry, equipment 101, marketing, Quickbooks, Variable Speed Pumps, Spanish language classes (15 total this year) as well many more topics.

I think education is huge in any industry but especially for the pool service industry. Things are changing so rapidly in this era that something might have been state of the art 2 years ago is now already outdated. When I started in 1988 there were very few if any automated systems, no robotic cleaners and very old brass pumps and stainless steel filters. In the past 30 years the industry has moved with almost light speed to populate backyards with sophisticated automation and variable speed pumps. If your not constantly learning you will fall behind the curve. So the seminar offer a great way to stay current each year with the industry trends.

The Exhibit Hall show floor is a great place to meet and greet manufacturers and suppliers large and small. There are close to 200 vendors including the big three Pentair, Jandy and Hayward. Plus many more such as Waterway, HASA, Taylor, LaMotte and too many more to list here. No where else can you see the products from every company displayed and explained to you on a one to one basis. Show Floor:

There are many great prizes given away at the show, none larger then the new truck giveaway! Each year they draw 10 names and from those 10 names one lucky winner gets the new truck. It is one of the coolest show prize giveaways! Also, on the hour they draw names for other great prizes and giveaways. Plus the vendors are always giving out prizes on the hour so walking the show floor not only allows you one to one time with the manufacturers but you can win lots of great prizes too.

Can I Use Clorox Bleach in my Pool?

Regular Unscented Bleach I started doing pool service when I was 16 years old back in 1988. I took a break from the industry and did some Real Estate Investing and ran a small business for awhile. But I always loved working outdoors and so I decided to do pool service again. So I have about 15 years of practical experience in the field. My specialty has always been water chemistry as I was formally trained by an experts in the field. So I am well versed in most of the chemicals that are on the market today and I have used and tested a lot of different products. Mr. Pen Non-contact Voltage Meter - Don't Get Electrocuted!

One of the biggest issues you will run into with anything connected to an AC power is if that device or equipment is receiving power. In the pool service industry, this often is the case when you find that a pool pump won’t turn on. Or if a pool timer doesn't on, is it receiving power? Also for repairs with so many breakers being unmarked, how do you know you turned off the right breaker. Bottom line, a non-contact detector like the Mr. Pen is an easy way to see if power is going to the equipment/device and the line is active. A non-contact voltage detector is just that. You don’t need to make contact with the line like with a Multimeter. Plus you don’t need to adjust any settings or knobs to get a voltage reading. Simply hold the Mr. Pen over a cord or wire whip and if there is AC power a red light will turn on and an audible beep will come out of the device.
