Some Ways to Offset the High Cost of Chlorine

Chlorine is expensive. The prices may be flat but when compared to 2019 they have increased some 100-200% depending on the chlorine type. The good news is that there are a number of ways to offset the high cost of chlorine.

Phosphate and Enzymes:
This one-two punch can be highly effective in allowing the chlorine to work in the pool on the things it was intended to and not be “used up” by phosphates and non-living organics.

Instead of getting technical and trying to teach a science class explaining how enzymes work, we will try to break it down more simply. Enzymes break non-living things down into smaller and smaller bits. Many non-living things are in pool and spa water; body oils, sweat, cosmetics, and sunscreens to name a few. This frees up the chlorine to work on the things it was intended to fight like viruses and bacteria instead of being wasted on these non-living organics.

Phosphate reducers are specialty chemicals used to remove phosphates from pool water. They are typically salts of aluminum or lanthanum which, when added to water, produce insoluble phosphate compounds which are removed through filtration, vacuuming, or both. Phosphates are food for algae and by eliminating them from the water you eliminate at least one major food source for algae. This will prevent algae growth which is a big reason why the chlorine level drops rapidly in some pools.

PoolRX and Mineral Systems:
PoolRx is a Mineral Technology that does two very simple things when used in your pool or spa; it eliminates all algae and will allows you to use less chlorine during the pool season. The active ingredient is Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate (chelated).

By eliminating algae growth the chlorine is automatically freed up and will last longer in a pool. Mineral technologies like the Frog and Nature2 also use minerals (metals) to prevent algae.

Borates:
The Borate in the water at 50 ppm helps reduce chlorine usage by eliminating Carbon Dioxide and also keeping the pH stable.

Boric Acid is a known Biostat. This prevents the algae cell from forming and multiplying. Thus, a pool with a Borate level between 30-50 ppm will prevent algae growth. Since borate prevents the algae cell from growing, algae blooms will be a thing of the past. No more algaecides or shocking the pool, algae just won’t grow in your pool any longer.

Salt Water Generator:
In the past, just 2 years ago there were no savings associated with a saltwater generator (SWG). But with chlorine prices as high as they currently are, it would not be a bad idea to have one installed. The upfront cost is $1,000-$2,000 but there are some great benefits with an SWG. Mainly you won’t need to buy chlorine again. If you factor in the cost of a new salt cell every 5 years, mathematically you might be breaking even on an SWG vs chlorine. But the fact that you won’t need to manually add chlorine each week and the convenience of a saltwater pool make it a smart idea.

UV, Ozone & AOP:
These systems need to be installed at the equipment and there is some upfront cost. But you can use 50% less chlorine each week or more and in the long run, they will also save you money. Not that these are not sanitizers but devices that help you run your pool using a lower chlorine level.

Western Pool & Spa Show 2023 Highlights

The 45th Annual Western Pool & Spa Show featured some familiar vendors and some new ones as well. The big three also showcased new products and I cover some of those in this video tour for you.

FullFloXF C620:
Pentair has a new 620 sq ft cartridge filter and I am excited to say that the drain plug is no longer under the inlet and outlet of the pump! It has two drain plugs which are overkill but I won’t complain too much about that.

SpeedSet:
Jandy has a new SpeedSet controller for their stand-alone VS pumps that is a direct replacement for the JEP-R controller that no one liked. It took them forever to come out with a replacement but the SpeedSet seems to be easy to use and set up. Unlike the JEP-R. It is also backward compatible with all Jandy VS pumps that were using the JEP-R. A real win for pool owners and pool service pros.

TracVac:
Hayward has a new suction cleaner and it looks like a good cross between the Aquanaut and a tank. It looks like the same internal parts and gearing with a new fixed turbine and in beta testing the TracVac did not get hung up on the Anti-Vortex main drains and it climbed the walls to the waterline.

There were a lot of familiar products at the show, many that I have reviewed. To watch a video on one of those products you can find them with these links below.

Residential vs Commercial Pool Service

Residential pool service and commercial pool service are two different types of pool services, with their own unique set of characteristics and requirements. Some pool pros prefer to just focus on residential pool care while others like to do both or just focus on commercial pools.

Residential pool service typically involves the maintenance and cleaning of pools in private homes. This service is focused on keeping the pool clean and functional, and typically includes tasks such as pool cleaning, chemical balancing, equipment maintenance, and repairs. Residential pool service does not require CPO Certification and in most cases, all you need is a business license.

Commercial pool service, on the other hand, involves the maintenance and cleaning of larger pools in public places, such as hotels, resorts, and community centers. You will need CPO Certification or be certified by your local health department. You are also required to keep chemistry logs and other forms and you will need the maximum general liability insurance policy.

This service requires a higher level of expertise and specialization, as these pools often have more complex systems and require more frequent maintenance. Commercial pool service may include tasks such as water testing and treatment, equipment repair and replacement, and compliance with local health and safety regulations. There is also a big headache factor with commercial pools as you will run into all kinds of strange issues including floating dirty diapers, a crazed health department inspector, and hard-to-deal-with management companies.

Another key difference between residential and commercial pool services is the frequency of service. Residential pool service is typically performed on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, while commercial pool service may require daily or multiple times per week service, depending on the usage of the pool. So you have to be committed to doing commercial pool service.

Overall, while there may be some overlap in the services provided, residential pool service and commercial pool service require different skill sets, equipment, and levels of expertise, and should be approached as distinct services. Mixing them on your service route leads to complications since commercial pool service is more time-consuming and demanding.

Pros of taking on commercial pools:
Steady income: Commercial pool service can provide a steady stream of income, as these clients often require regular and ongoing maintenance.
Larger revenue potential: Commercial pools are often larger and require more extensive maintenance and repairs, which can lead to higher revenue potential for pool service providers.

Cons of taking on commercial pools:
Increased liability: Commercial pools are subject to a higher level of regulation and oversight, and pool service providers may be held liable for accidents or injuries that occur on the property.
Higher costs: Commercial pool service requires specialized equipment and supplies, which can be more expensive than those used for residential pools.
Longer service hours: Commercial pools often require service outside of regular business hours, which can be more demanding and require a greater time commitment from pool service providers.

PoolRx+ Booster & Compatibility

The PoolRx Booster is a bit of a mystery for many consumers and pool service pros. It is just the PoolRx+ minerals packed into a paste form that you would use under a few circumstances. One, if you notice the minerals have worn out either after 4-6 months or from other issues like algae, heavy use, and so on. Two, if the pool is large and you are using it to bring up the mineral content to the manufacturer's recommended levels for that pool size. Three, if you use a PoolRx+ to clear a green pool, you may need a booster sooner because the minerals were used up fighting the algae.

They now have two boosters available for PoolRx+, a Blue booster with 8 oz of the mineral and a Black Booster with 12 oz of the mineral. Depending on the unit you have and the pool size will determine which booster to use.

PoolRx+ is compatible with all chlorine types, if using cal hypo be sure to dilute it in a bucket of water before pouring it into the pool. PoolRx+ is also compatible with all salt systems, ozone systems, UV, and AOP.

PoolRX+ is not compatible with other copper algaecides, biguanides, bromine, sodium bromide
What Chelated means is that the metals in the PoolRx have been bonded to form two coordinated bonds similar to what Metal Sequestering Agents do. This means that the Metal Ions will remain in the PoolRx unit with no metal ions being introduced into the pool or spa water. PoolRx is Chelated so the metal ions stay within the PoolRx unit itself.

Make sure that you choose the right size PoolRX unit so that the treatment will be effective. You can place it either in your skimmer or pump basket. When you first insert the unit run your pool for 3-4 hours. Then run it the normal cycle to get at least one full cycle of water from the pool, into the filter and back into the pool again. The PoolRx unit should last 4-6 months.

PoolRx eliminates all algae fast. Even microalgae that you can't see but uses up the chlorine in your pool.

PoolRx is ideal for a saltwater pool also. It will extend the life of your salt cell as you run the system at a lower output while PoolRx is present in the pool, typically 50% less output. PoolRx minerals also include a de-scaler that will prevent scale from attaching to the salt cell meaning less cleaning of the cell is needed. Also since it is generating less, the pH won't rise as high requiring less acid to be added to the pool.

You can also use PoolRx to clear up a green pool. Fred goes over the process in detail in the Podcast
and I have done this myself so I know it is very effective. Just remember that a lot of the minerals will be used up in clearing up the pool so a Booster Pack will be needed.

For step-by-step instructions in clearing up a green pool:  http://poolrx.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/PoolRX-Green-to-CleanWEB.pdf

If you are a homeowner purchasing PoolRx for your pool will save you money on all of your chemicals including chlorine (liquid or tablets), clarifiers, Phosphate Removers, and Shock. The price of the PoolRx unit will pay for itself over the course of the season and as a bonus, your water will remain algae-free. So the $60-$90 investment is well worth it and to get your money's worth to add the PoolRx right at the beginning of the season.

For the Pool Service Professional PoolRx is something that you would add on and charge your customers for. Customers differ and some may want a detailed explanation of what PoolRx does and is while others will not mind at all. To help in this PoolRx has a section on their website dedicated to Pool Service Professionals. You must register first and then you will have access to documentation and form letters that you can send to your customers.

For Salt Water Pools:

“Dear Valued Customer,

As your service company, we are always striving to provide the best service possible using the most updated methods and products available.  Every once in a while, a product comes along that will increase the quality of the service we can provide at a minimal cost.

PoolRx is that product:

PoolRx Mineral Technology uses nature’s purifiers to eliminate all algae (even microscopic algae you can’t see) and free up chlorine to be more active and available in the water.  This allows a lower level of chlorine to eliminate organics, bacteria, and viruses.  The result is cleaner, safer, algae-free water all season.

PoolRx improves Water Quality – The unique mineral formula works synergistically with low levels of Salt chlorine leaving you with water that looks and feels like never before.

With PoolRx, we can turn down your salt chlorine generator, typically by 50% of its previous setting. This will allow us to use less acid to balance pH, which will improve the bather experience.

The PoolRx mineral formula also includes a natural de-scaler, that will extend the time between cell cleanings.

Less generation and less cleaning of the salt cell is proven to significantly prolong the life of the salt cell, saving you money.

We simply place the PoolRx unit in your pump basket or skimmer and the minerals packed inside the alloy cylinder dissolve into your pool water. The PoolRx minerals are rejuvenated when they pass back through the unit during circulation.  This process allows the minerals to regain their ionic charge, and last for up to 6 months.  In extreme cases, we may need to add additional PoolRx Booster minerals to the water depending on the bather load and water conditions.

We highly recommend adding this amazing mineral technology to your salt pool. If you agree, please reply to this email and let us know.  A one-time charge of $65.00 will be added to your next bill.

Best Regards,

Remington Solar Chlorine-Free Sun Shock & Water Purifier

The Remington Solar Chlorine-Free “Sun Shock” uses lower power output from the Solar Panels on the unit to generate ions which will keep your pool algae-free all season long. The Remington Chlorine-Free Sun Shock is an effective way to prevent algae in your pool and as a side benefit the Anode also attracts calcium and iron which will soften the pool water.

For those opposed to using any copper in your pool for fear of staining the surface, this is a safe method. It is very easy to control the Copper Ion output and if it reaches 0.5 ppm simply removing the Remington Solar will prevent any staining. In most cases, the copper level will rarely get that high.
The Remington Solar Chlorine-Free “Sun Shock”  comes with everything you need in the box including copper test strips. It is important to test the Copper levels every few weeks just to make sure the levels stay safe. Again, if they get too high simply remove the product from the pool for a week or two. In my area of Southern California, the well water is very hard so the Anode developed a lot of build-ups while in use. So it is important to also check and clean the Anode every week if needed.

Some of the benefits of the Remington Solar Chlorine-Free “Sun Shock” is that with the Anode working (solar panels) it will prevent algae and kill micro-organisms. This means that if you want you can lower the chlorine level down to 1.0 – 1.5 ppm and run your pool with a low chlorine level. You can still maintain your chlorine at 3.0 ppm if you chose and the Remington Solar will still have the same benefits. Since it prevents algae you will notice your chlorine use drop by as much as 50% as algae is a big reason your chlorine is used up in your pool. If your pool has a continuous algae problem the Remington Solar would be perfect for you. The test pool has step areas that get no Sunlight all year round.

One unit is good for 22,000 gallons of water so if you have a larger pool you will need two units. They also now have an effective cleaning solution for the anode so maintenance is simple and easy.

From the manufacturer:
“This solar water purifier protects you by transforming your water into biologically healthy and algae-resistant mineral water. Using a safe and effective low-power output, the Remington Solar water purifier acts as a trickle charger to generate ions from the sunlight. Works great in either salt-water or non-salt-water pool systems! Enjoy swimming in the clearest, cleanest, and softest water imaginable, without the unpleasant smell or taste of chlorine!

The Remington Solar Pool Sun Shock water purifier is the only purifier that, in addition to generating beneficial mineral ions, collects undesirable minerals such as calcium and iron. This has the effect of softening your water.”

When Pool Filter Elements go Bad

Cartridges or sand can seem like a lot of guesswork when it comes time to decide if the filter elements and media are bad. There is no set-in-stone time frame for each so you will have to do a little detective work to find the correct time. If your D.E. Filter is spitting out D.E. through the return lines it is time to inspect and probably change the girds. Even a tiny hole in the grid can shoot back a large amount of dirt, D.E., and debris. Typically D.E. filter grids are good for 4-5 years, although if your filter gets very dirty and is under constant high pressure (high PSI on the gauge), then changing them after 2-3 years would not be a bad idea.

Cartridge filters are a bit tougher to diagnose and you can’t always rely on the filter pressure (PSI). Since the larger 4 cartridge-type filters have such a large filtration area the PSI tends to stay at the clean range for months at a time. If you clean your 4 cartridge type filter and the PSI is sitting at 20 PSI, don’t be surprised 5 months later even with very dirty cartridges that the gauge is still reading 20 PSI. For the single cartridge filters or single bullet filters, as we call them, the PSI will rise about 10 PSI indicating when the cartridge is dirty.

Typically a 4-cartridge filter will go about 3 years before you need to replace the cartridges. The only exception to this rule is the Sta-Rite System 3 Cartridge filter where the large and small cartridges can go 5 years or more between replacement. The single-cartridge filter should be replaced every year and sometimes sooner depending on if it is on a very large heavy-use pool. The way I gauge a cartridge filter and when it needs new cartridges is by the flow and water quality of the pool in question. If the flow is poor after cleaning the cartridge(s) it is probably time to change them.  Again, usage and the size of the pool are a factor, and use the pool’s return flow and water quality as your indicator – cloudy water or algae, and not holding chlorine are some common signs.

For a Sand filter knowing when to change the sand can be even more difficult. Typically you are using the water quality as your gauge and also the age of the filter and sand. Of course, if you purchased a house with an existing sand filter you may not know either so that is not always a helpful indicator. If you backwash your sand filter and notice the PSI on the pressure gauge jumps up by 10 PSI after a few days, this may indicate the sand is no longer working. It could also be the water quality itself causing the PSI to rise rapidly so you can also do a test using Floc.

If the pool water is very cloudy adding a Floc agent is a good way to clear I up and test it to see if you need new sand. You would add the Floc agent and run the filter on recirculate for 1 hour. Then turn the pool pump off for 24 to 48 hours. The Floc agent will drop everything down to the bottom of the pool and you can then vacuum to waste. If the pool water stays clear for a few days and the chlorine is holding steady, then your sand is probably still good. When the water quality turns bad in a sand filter it can affect the filtration dramatically. That is why the Floc test is a good way to check to see if the sand is good or bad. If you Floc the pool and then the water clouds up quickly again the filter is probably not filtering effectively and will need a sand change.

One major way to assess if the filter elements need to be changed is by the water quality and the return flow of the pool. If you notice the pool is not holding chlorine and the water is cloudy I would suggest inspecting and replacing the filter elements to see if that corrects the problem.
