Split Couplers for Your Swimming Pool Plumbing Leaks!

MikeysQuickCoupler: 2-Piece Coupler that fits existing unions like the Pentair and Hayward Salt cells.  It goes on in a minute without cutting or replumbing. In the past when a nut cracks on a backwash valve, salt cell, and filter bulkhead you would need to cut it off and do extensive plumbing. The plumbing cost alone can range from $300-$500 just to replace a $15.00 part.
These 2-piece split couplers are a game changer for the swimming pool industry. Find the right 2-piece split coupler from the list below (note new ones are being made) and do the repair in about 1 minute. No cutting or replumbing is required.

To learn more and to order:

The Quick Couplers are made of very strong plastic and are molded here in the USA. Once you get one in your hands you will see for yourself that these are built to last.

P&H SLT
This coupling replaces the cracked/broken couplings on either end of your Intellichlor or Hayward Salt Cells.  It also fits Waterway 2” Unions. This is also being used on Hot-Tub equipment. It does fit the Dura-jet pump. You can try it on other equipment as it seems to be the most Universal of the split-couplers.

Do not use on the older Hayward Turbo-Cell 15   'GOLD LINE'  some have different threads.
J-CTKR-2”
This will fit a 2" Jandy caretaker system.

P-BKWSH
No need to change the whole valve, take the broken nut off and mine will go right on. For a Pentair Backwash Valve and some Pentair filter Bulkhead unions. Fits the Newer Multi-Port Pentair valves also.

PRH-2”
Fits the Praher 2" ball valve coupling.

H-200
This fits the Hayward -backwash/ slide valves as well as any other Hayward equipment that uses the Hayward H-200 like certain filters and other Hayward equipment.

I would order one of each and carry them on my service truck. You never know when you will need one and you can always try one on a particular union to see if it fits. The P&H SLT seems to be the most universal of the split-couplers and may fit many unions commonly used in the pool and spa industry. Mike is also taking requests for more Quick Coupler designs and you can email or call him with suggestions.

How Long Should You Run Your Pool Pump?

Simply put, no matter how long you run your swimming pool pump, you will not get all of the water from the pool, through the filter, and back out again. So does run time matter? Yes and no. Technically speaking you should try to get at least one cycle of water through the pool, 2-3 cycles all the better as you can see from the study I am referencing below.

To calculate a cycle of water you usually need a flow meter attached to your pool equipment. As a rule of thumb 50, GPM is about the average with a single-speed pump running at the full 3450 RPM. You can get a ballpark and use this formula if you do not have a flow meter on your equipment.
Pool size/ 50 Gallons Per Minute/ 60 minutes. Here is an example with a 20,000-gallon pool:
20,000 Gal / 50 GPM /60 minutes = 6 hours and 30 minutes

So a cycle of water will go through the pool once every 6.5 hours. But how much pool water actually will go through the filter and then back into the pool? Here is the study abstract for you.

"The primary objective of this study was to conduct a quantitative analysis of the hydraulic efficiency of a 1:25 bench-scale swimming pool and to determine whether the recirculation efficiency could be increased by modifying parameters such as turnover rate, inlet/out configuration, and extent of mixing within the pool. Salt tracer studies were conducted using KCl to determine the residence time distribution and describe the hydraulic characteristics of the pool. The results indicated that the removal of the tracer always followed an exponential decay curve, i.e. 63, 86, and 95% for the first, second, and third turnover periods, respectively. In the majority of experiments, the exponential decay rate matched the inverse of the theoretical hydraulic detention time of the system. The results showed that none of the investigated parameters had any significant impact on the tracer removal efficiency. Increasing removal efficiencies of current treatment technologies such as sand and cartridge filters from approximately 25–90% would provide significant improvements in the rate of removal of Cryptosporidium-sized particles. Improving the treatment efficiency beyond 90% would have little additional impact, but further improvements could be achieved by decreasing the system turnover rate."

Does this mean we simply give up on the one cycle through the filter since it only gets 63% of the water through and will never really reach 100% (based on the study only 95% can be reached)? Certainly not. Since the whole reason for circulation is to prevent bather to bather disease the longer you can run your pool increases the prevention of disease. You also prevent algae and poor water quality (cloudy water) by running your pool as much as possible each day during the season.
This study just shows that you need to be aware of the fact that short run times are not effective for your pool. The longer run times the better. If you are worried about electricity costs switching to a Variable Speed (VS) pump would be a smart thing to do.

SMARTERSPA The EASY Way to Convert Your Spa to a Saltwater Chlorine Spa!

The SmarterSpa is a great way to convert your spa to salt without any replumbing and it is basically a plug-and-play device! It takes minutes to mount it and a few more to add the salt and get it up and running. Drop the electrode in and after setting the level you are good to go.

Order on their site and use this code to save 10% at checkout “POOLGUY”

The SmarterSpa is great for spas and hot tubs under 1,000 gallons of water which is the majority out there. Just make sure you have a plug nearby as it comes with only 15 ft of cable. Also, make sure you have a place to mount the controller outside of direct sunlight. It is water resistant but I would keep it out of the rain if possible. The only real drawback is that the electrode will be in the spa but you will get used it pretty quickly. Since there is no plumbing to make it an in-line system I would say these drawbacks are minor. There really is no easier way to add a salt system (SWG – Salt Water Generator) to your spa.

Here is more about the product:
SmarterSpa is the only saltwater chlorine generator with chlorine detection built into the electrode. It produces chlorine in its pure form using electrolysis — a small amount of ordinary salt dissolved in the water. SmarterSpa eliminates the guesswork by knowing when it's time to power on or off. It will not over-chlorinate your spa.

EASIER ON YOUR EYES AND SKIN - Salt is the same ingredient used in water softening systems today and has a natural effect on softening the water in your pool or spa.

SMART AUTOMATIC CHLORINATION - Using its built-in chlorine detection system, the SmarterSpa will generate only what it needs to when it needs to. The onboard self-cleaning reverse polarity system reduces the time you spend worrying about maintenance.

EASY TO INSTALL AND USE - The plug-and-play chlorinator system does not require plumbing or mechanical alternations. Just attach the panel to the outside of your pool and lower the electrode into the water.

THRICE THE AMOUNT OF CHLORINE COMPARED TO ITS COMPETITORS - Other brands make between 8g-11g of chlorine per day in 5 gallons of water, while SmarterSpa makes 30g of pure chlorine per day. ControlOMatic can handle larger spas and is most likely to run at a lower power level. This will increase the life span of the titanium plates.

SmarterSpa Features:
Built-In Chlorine Detection Technology: will not over chlorinate your spa
Easy-To-Use Control Box: 3 buttons and 4 lights for operation; conveniently mounts to the spa’s skirt
Low 1,500 to 2,000 PPM salt concentration
Salt Level Indicator Technology: lets you know when to add salt to maintain or boost chlorine production
Boost Mode allows for manual control
Automatic Cleaning: polarity reverses periodically to clean and help reduce calcium buildup
Pure chlorination of up to 30 grams per day
10 Time-Based Power Levels of chlorine production
Electrode Life Span: 7,000 hours of chlorine production
Easy-To-Clean Electrode
No spa modifications are required, and the spa does not need to be turned on
Electrode simply drapes over the side of the spa into the water
Supports both 110 and 220 VAC supply voltages
High Current Shutdown to protect the power supply and titanium plates if there is too much salt
For spas up to 1,000 gallons

D.E. Powder is Leaking into my Pool!

There are three main types of D.E. filters on the market today. The most common is the traditional grid type D.E. filter which consists of a Top Manifold, 8 grids in a circular pattern, and a bottom manifold. This is the type made by Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward as well as off-brand makers like Waterway. Pentair makes a unique D.E. filter known as the Quad D.E. Filter and this filter consists of up to 4 cartridges instead of vertical grids. They also make a Quad D.E. Filter for their Sta-Rite brand. The last type is made by Hayward and is often referred to as a “Bump D.E. Filter” and is their Perflex D.E. Filter. These filters are usually found in above-ground pools and are not very popular in my area.

If Your D.E. filter is leaking D.E. back into your pool here are the possible sources:

1. Air gets into the system allowing the filter to drain back into the pool when the pump turns off. You will see D.E. leaking back into the pool through the skimmer and main drain. Find an air leak and repair it.

2. The top manifold has a crack in it. For the Pentair 2000 and 4000 series note that the top manifold is actually on the filter bottom. Replace the top manifold to stop the leak.

3. The Air bleeder assembly is missing the screen or cloth cover, replace that and the leak should stop.

4. The stem o-ring (Stand Pipe o-ring) is missing or loose. This will let D.E. back into the pool and replacing it is the solution. ALA-601-4608 0-24-9 O-RING AMP/PUR/HAY/PAC/SAU (STEM)

5. A grid has a tear in it or the top portion that goes into the manifold is broken. Replace the grid and this will fix the issue.

6. Under rare situations, the Stand Pipe itself has come loose from the filter. Replace the Stand Pipe and the leak will be fixed.

What makes the D.E. filter so effective is the D.E. itself or Diatomaceous Earth, which is used to coat the grids. This white powder material will filter out dirt, viruses, and bacteria as well as fine particles allowing for crystal clear water to flow back into the pool. If you have ever cleaned a D.E. filter you will notice that the D.E. will be coated with dirt and algae as well as fine debris, leaving the grids clean and white underneath. A cartridge filter cannot do this by design as the dirt, algae, and debris will stick to the pleats in the cartridge material themselves. The D.E. acts as a type of secondary media or you can even look at the D.E. as a shield that absorbs all of the filtered particles allowing for clear water to return to the pool.

There are some drawbacks to D.E. Filters that you need to be aware of. The first drawback is the D.E. powder itself. It is messy and if you have an all-cement deck it can be a pain to clean up after cleaning or backwashing your filter. D.E. is also banned by many cities and if they find you expelling D.E. into the street they will fine you anywhere from $10,000 or more. Some cities even ban the installation of D.E. filters entirely.

Another drawback is that if a grid or manifold has a tear or crack, the D.E. filter media will blow right back into the pool (see above points to correct a leak). Even the smallest tear will allow large amounts of D.E. back into your pool. This will turn the water cloudy and also create poor filtration leading to algae growth and the chlorine zeroing out. A simple fix is to take the filter apart and replace all of the torn or broken parts. But be aware that a D.E. leaking back into your pool is a common issue with a D.E. Filter.

Riptide SL Overview with Dave Sargent, President

The Riptide Pool Vacuum System made its debut in late 2016. Since then, it has gone through several transformations. The Riptide Circa 2021 is the finest version yet and it is packed with so many updated features it should have been called the Riptide SL 2.0. Listen as David Sargent
President goes over some of the features for you in person.

Here are some of the great updated features:
High Torque Motor (uses rare earth magnets) High Torque Motor- Our new High Torque motor utilizes rare earth magnets making it the most powerful vacuum on the market

The cord -the new protective external layer –just feels so solid and durable

Cord Clip – secures the cord to the cart so no more worries of it falling off and dragging on the ground

Stainless steel end plates on the vacuum head

The cart is now e-coated before powder coating & the Transport Rack Is e-coated now too - Electrostatic Coating- All of our powder-coated parts are now electrostatic coated (ecoating) and then powder coated over. This makes the finish of our components much more durable.

Extremely high-quality integrated steering knuckle -Integrated Stainless Steel Steering Knuckle. This allows you to hook any pole directly up to the Riptide vacuum without the need for any adaptors while being effortless to maneuver in the water.

The SL model Riptides now include a Diagnostic/Tool Kit with a battery load tester, the load tester is essential for quickly determining battery condition.

The bags now have a different ring color to differentiate different microns.

The bags (100 Micron and below) are double layers now this feature is making the bags last much longer.

25 Micron Bag available (specialty dust bag) this bag can eliminate the need to system vac a pool with a dust problem.

The updated Riptide SL is the most durable vacuum system on the market today. The shell is backed by a 10-year warranty, the added steel plates to the vacuum head sides, the stainless steel knuckle, and the new beefed-up cord make it designed to last! The cart and transport rack has been given a stronger paint job thanks to the new Electrostatic coating!

Let me touch on the cord length choices. I was always a 40 ft cord user and didn’t consider a 60 ft cord much at all. Until of course, I tried a Riptide with a 60 ft cord. The difference is pretty amazing. You can vacuum just about any residential pool from one end. Why is that so good? It just is very convenient. No need to park the cart in the center of a pool.  And never run out of slack on top of that. For commercial pools, it is a must. And it is only $60 more at checkout for the longer cord. I would suggest the 60 ft of cord if you are on the fence about it over the 40 ft cord.

The new bag design is pretty cool. Each micron is color coded now by a different color rim. So if you carry multiple micron bags you know that the purple is 25 microns and the orange is 100 microns. They are a little harder to get off without the tabs now but it is a trade-off between better bags and the older style. They also are all double bagged making them extremely durable.

Water Tech Leaf Vac Recharge!

The Water Tech Volt Leaf Vac Recharge is something that a lot of pool owners have been waiting for. This is a Leaf Vac that now features a built-in Lithium Ion battery and it can be easily recharged by plugging it in. In a nutshell, this is a cordless, rechargeable leaf vac and now you can vacuum out leaves without using a garden hose or worrying about using an endless supply of AA batteries.

Who is this designed for? The pool owner with a pool with a lot of leaf debris and the pool pro looking for an effective way to vacuum up leaves from a pool. You can also lock the handle and use the Leaf Vac to skim leaves off of the surface and it is surprisingly effective. This is primarily designed to replace the standard leaf vac that uses a garden hose connected to a water source to “power it.”

Here is more about the Volt Recharge:
Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery
Automatic On/Off Water Sensor
Up to 3 Hour Run Time
(2) reusable all-purpose filter bag
Flip Leaf Vac upside down to skim the pool surface
SKU# 11A0060LS

The updated features that make this Water Tech Leaf Vac different from their other models is the internal Lithium Ion battery vs a battery chamber that would hold 8-AA batteries. This means the unit will remain sealed and water will not be able to get into the unit due to user error.

The on/off switch has also been removed and the Volt Recharge has a sensor on top of the motor that will turn on the machine once it is in the water. It will turn off when it is out of the water. I believe this feature will make this unit longer lasting as the on/off electronic component is now removed.

The 3-hour run time matches their battery-operated units and this is a pretty amazing run time for a portable vacuum. If you are a service pro that means you can use it all day on your route and as a homeowner you will not be charging it very often which will give this product a very long lifespan. It comes with a 2-year limited warranty with the first year being a full warranty.

Is 3 PPM of Free Chlorine the Magic Number?

First off credit for all of this goes to the Legendary Bob Lowry who before his passing last year cemented this theory in the industry through his books, seminars, Certification course, and here on my podcast show as well as others. So all credit of course goes to Bob Lowry and I am just expounding on his teaching here.

The formula is thus:
Your pool’s FC level should be 7.5% of your pool’s Cyanuric Acid (CYA) level to effectively prevent algae and kill viruses and bacteria (summarized). Bob Lowry devised this 7.5% number and under the surface, there was a lot of complicated math involved. With Borates in the pool that magic number drops to 5% of FC to the pool’s CYA level.

Here are two examples.
A pool with a CYA level of 50 ppm will require 3.75 ppm of FC (4ppm to make it easy).
50 x 7.5% = 3.75
A pool with a CYA level of 100 ppm will need an FC level of 7.5 ppm
100 x 7.5% = 7.5

If you have a pool with constant algae or other water quality issues try this formula out. I have tested it in the field and have found it to be spot on in all of my test pools. My wife jokes all the time that the answer to almost all water chemistry issues is to “add more chlorine!” Which as it turns out is not too far from the truth.  Note that this FC to CYA level is something that needs to be constant all week and month. If your pool with a CYA of 50 ppm drops down to 2 ppm mid-week, there is a chance that algae can gain a foothold. Or that the chlorine will not effectively protect bathers from viruses and bacteria in the water.

Why hasn’t this FC to CYA formula been adopted by more organizations out there? In part because the 3 ppm of FC has been entrenched in the industry for decades. It would be like taking the Strawberry ice cream out of Neapolitan ice cream. It is entrenched in the mindset of the entire pool industry. Indeed why Bob Lowry called himself an outsider or Maverick of the industry.

So is there a magic FC level? Yes and no. According to Bob Lowry, it all depends on the pool’s CYA level and if you adhere to the 3 ppm as being the ideal level then the pool’s CYA level needs to be at 40 ppm constantly all season long. Which of course is hard to do in a realistic pool setting.

If you want to adopt this method I suggest adding borates to your pools to bring that level to 50 ppm as an extra insurance policy. Remember the magic number drops to 5% of the CYA level. You may also want to keep a higher FC in your pool, something seasoned pool pros have been doing for years during the Summer, sometimes effectively duplicating Bob Lowry’s formula unknowingly. And in all reality a bather cannot tell if the pool has 3 ppm or 7 ppm of FC in the water since most of it will be bound to the CYA in the water and reality, a ppm is a very tiny amount of anything. Adding more chlorine then is better than trying to keep it at the unmagical 3 ppm mark.

VacDaddy V2W with Creator Matthew D'Aguanno

The VacDaddy vacuum to waste makes this one of the most versatile pool vacuums on the market today. Since you are watching the Pool Show video VacDaddy will give you the show discount! Order now and use code: DVB100 to save $100 on the VacDaddy V2W.

To order Vac Daddy Vacuum to Waste Version: https://thevacdaddy.com/product/the-vacdaddy-v2w/

The vacuum to waste aspect of the VacDaddy is a true gamechanger for your pool route. Now you can use the VacDaddy to do clean-ups, green pool clean-ups, and any other use that requires a portable pump to vacuum a pool to waste. This makes the VacDaddy a truly versatile vacuum and expands the use from a daily vacuum to a device that takes the place of a larger portable pump.

Here is more about the VacDaddy unit from the manufacturer:
The primary benefit of The VacDaddy is EASE-OF-USE.

Lightweight and compact. At only 10 pounds, The VacDaddy is easy to operate and maneuver.
The minimal assembly is easy and intuitive. No special training is required to use. Simply plug in and Just Vac It.

Fast pool cleaning with more vacuuming power than other heavy-duty commercial vacuums.
Eliminates the need to set up and prime a bulky hose.

Perfect for touch-ups between weekly cleanings and to reach areas robotic vacuums can’t easily get to.

The VacDaddy is the most powerful, portable pool vacuum new to the market with a continuous power supply. The VacDaddy’s continuous power eliminates dependency on batteries with limited life. The VacDaddy is lightweight, easy to use, powerful, and requires no poolside assembly or training.

The VacDaddy was invented by a 35-year veteran of the pool service industry who has worked with hundreds of pool owners. He has long believed there should be a better way to clean your pool. Commercial vacuums require 20 minutes to set up and detailed instructions to use. Other options include weak battery vacuums or heavy robots which take hours to clean your pool.

Cleaning your carpets doesn’t require all this setup and weightlifting, why should clean your pool? We have devoted ourselves to perfecting The VacDaddy Pool Vacuum System. The goal was to create a durable, lightweight, powerful cleaner that is easy to use and we have done just that. The VacDaddy system will allow users to clean their pools in less time with less effort. Like your carpet vacuum, plugin, and JUST VAC IT!

So with all that said where would I place the VacDaddy as compared to say a Riptide, Hammer-Head, or PowerVac? It does pump a pretty impressive 55-60 GPM so it is not like a Water Tech cleaner, except maybe the Precision 2.0 that pulls about 25 GPM. It has a similar look to the 2.0 but I think the power difference sets the Vac Daddy apart. I mean, it feels like you are using the pool filtration system with the vacuum connected to the skimmer. In reality, most pools will pull about 60 GPM unless they are powered by a 3 hp pump considering the resistance of the plumbing and distance from the skimmer. So having all of that power sitting right behind the vac head is pretty awesome.

With that said vacuuming spas and steps is a little tricky. You have to tilt the vacuum down so that you don’t shoot water everywhere which is something they are addressing soon with an attachment to reduce the water flow.

You also need access to a socket for this to work at your customer's home. It comes with a power unit that needs to be plugged in. Most pool owners will have a socket somewhere by their pool or equipment area. It comes with 45 feet of cord that attaches from the power unit to the VacDaddy and it has a look and feel of a robotic pool cleaner cord. For me, the cord was not a big deal as I know that the 60 GPM is only going to be produced by an external power source.

It comes with two bags and they seem relatively small in comparison to a Vacuum System bag. But the VacDaddy is not designed for big leaf debris clean-up but if you have an average amount of leaves and dirt in a pool this will work perfectly. I would say it is suitable for pools with light to medium debris and dirt.

I would say the VacDaddy is positioned to be a player in the portable vacuum sector. Yes, it is hard to categorize exactly but I think if you are looking for a tool to speed up your day on your route, this is one to consider.

NIdec Neptune Vs Pump Programming

The Nidec VS pump comes with a pre-programmed run cycle however you may find programming in your schedule and run times more advantageous. Also, setting the pump run speeds or RPM to your liking is something you may also want to do. Detailed instructions can be found here as well as in the video: https://acim.nidec.com/motors/usmotors/-/media/usmotors/documents/techdocs/manuals/neptune-16527-thp-pool-pump-installation-and-operation-guide.ashx

The Neptune variable speed motor and control provide flexibility and ease when it comes to upgrading to a variable speed pump. After all, the real heart of the pool pump is the motor on the back. Why spend $1,600 on an entirely new pump when just replacing the motor on the back with a Neptune VS motor will fix the problem. And no replumbing is needed. Simply remove the old motor and install the Neptune VS motor on the back of your existing pump.

The Neptune variable speed pool pump motor is a premium efficient product that includes a fully integrated motor, control, and user interface (UI). This U.S. MOTORS product gives you programming flexibility and speed range capability. It is also designed to communicate and operate with a variety of external automated system controllers in addition to the onboard control panel.

The Neptune variable speed motor is easy to install. By replacing an old single-speed pump motor with a Neptune, your customers can keep their properly functioning pump and quickly upgrade it into a much more energy-efficient product. The Neptune is also easy to program. Underneath the lid is a Quick Start Guide that provides step-by-step instructions to ensure your customers save energy and properly filter the pool. The Neptune comes with a factory-installed run schedule which allows the unit to function after simply setting the time of day.

The Neptune provides rugged construction for longer life. The enclosure is finned aluminum that provides a water ingress protection level of IPX5, which helps achieve a long field life in outdoor environmental conditions. To pass the IPX5 test, a water hose must be sprayed onto the motor from all directions with no water getting inside the motor. One of the best features of the Neptune variable speed pool pump motor is the quietness with which it runs. The motor control has no switching mechanisms. When the motor is programmed for slower speeds, the sound levels are typically much reduced compared to the homeowner’s old single-speed motor-powered pump.

The Neptune offers a long list of other features:

The total horsepower (THP) rated, from 1.25THP to 2.70THP

Single-phase input, 50 or 60 Hz
