Fastest Way to Vacuum up Leaf Debris on Your Pool Route: Riptide SL Pool Vacuum System

I have been using the Riptide Pool Vacuum System for over a year now on my pool route. For pools that get a lot of heavy debris this is a real Game Changer. I also use the Riptide on my regular pools with light debris and I can clean those in record time. By the time I have my manual vacuum connected the Riptide will be more than half way done with the pool. I can't say enough good things about the Riptide Vacuum System.

They are always making improvements and with the new Steering Knuckle the Riptide is extremely maneuverable and easy to use. They also have improved the cord and the power switch so the Riptide Pool Vacuum System is one of most well built and reliable on the market today. The bags have also proven to be excellent and extremely durable. And the vacuum head itself is made out of such strong material that after over a year it hardly looks worn at all.

The Riptide is designed to pick up debris on the pool floor in an efficient and rapid manner. It picks up a large amount of leaf debris without scattering it all over the place like a leaf rake would. So it will cut your cleaning time down by more than half or less making your day that much easier. I use the Riptide on just about all my pools as it does a great job also with sand and dirt. Only the very fine dust will get through the standard 100 micron bag so not only will it speed up your day on pools with larger leaf debris but also on your regular light debris accounts.

The SL model has done so well in sales that they have stopped selling the Large Commercial Service Cart version and now only focus on the SL and the Battery Box XP version. I really like the Commercial Version but the shipping of that unit was also not cost productive. The SL model only cost $50 to ship anywhere in the Continental US. Once you place your order it takes about one week to receive the Riptide SL – making it very accessible and easy to get. If you prefer to order it without the service cart the XP model is perfect. It comes with the vacuum head and a battery box (case).

If you are servicing pools for a living and you are not using a vacuum system like the Riptide you are missing out on some great benefits. With the Riptide you can bid and service accounts that many other companies will pass on. You can do special one time clean up in the Windy Season. You will also be able to clean your service accounts faster each day allowing you to do more accounts each day and in turn make more money. In the windy season you will be able to clean the pools more effectively and tmake you clients happy which generates more referrals. You will also look more professional when cleaning a pool out verses skimming the bottom with your leaf rake. The benefits go on and on and the extra time and work you can do each week will more than pay for the Riptide.

Currently the SL Model sells for $1,600 and the XP Model sells for $850. To learn more and to order visit their website: https://www.riptidevac.com/

Aqua-Rex Water Conditioner: Reduces Scale and Removes Scale from your Pool Tiles!

The Aqua-Rex WK1P Water Conditioner is a great way to remove and control scale on your pool walls and tiles. I recently picked up a unit and tried it for myself at one of my service accounts. I was pretty skeptical myself but the results after one month were pretty amazing. While it didn't completely remove the scale 100% it faded it to a point where it is really hard to see. It also reduced the Phosphate levels down each week in this pool. Here is more about the Aqua-Rex from the manufacturer:

Known to the rest of the world as the 'Water-King,' the Aqua-Rex is a non-intrusive physical water conditioner (softener) that inhibits scale formation, removes existing scale deposits and partially softens hot water.
Aqua-Rex is very effective at removing existing scale deposits from water heaters, tanks and plumbing. Descaling occurs within a few weeks.

The scale breaks away in small plates as it loses adhesion with the surface that it is encrusting. Important: In existing systems that are already badly scaled it may be worth considering fitting a filter on the hot flow from the water heaters to protect blending valves and other appliances.

To achieve this, Aqua-Rex uses pre-programmed micro-chips to transmit pulses of electrical charge into the water at varying frequencies and amplitudes. These "signals" cause some of the salts in the water to form sub- microscopic clusters. When the water is then heated, the clusters act as nucleation seeds upon which the calcium carbonate (lime scale) precipitates. Instead of the hard encrustation on pipes and heating elements that normally occurs when water is heated, the precipitation takes the form of tiny calcium carbonate crystals that float suspended in the water.

These invisible fine crystals are carried away with the flowing water. The clusters created by Aqua-Rex stimulate the conversion of more of the dissolved calcium bicarbonate in the water into crystals in suspension than would otherwise occur. The resulting hot water, with less calcium bicarbonate, is now chemically softer. Aqua-Rex is the only electronic device of its kind that has been proven by independent laboratory tests to produce softer water .

Aqua-Rex does this:
  • Calcium scale on tiles and pool walls breaks up and falls away. Stops calcium scale along the water line. Saves bead blasting.
  • On Salt Water systems it keeps the generator cleaner. Saves de-scaling.
  • Reduces phosphates in the water and makes it much clearer. Saves chemicals.
  • Cleans scale from the water heater. Makes it operate more efficiently. Saves energy.
  • Helps kill bacteria so you have less need to "shock" treat a pool. Saves chemicals.
  • Reduces TDS so less need to dump water. Saves water.”

I also spent some time on their website reading the independent test results which showed calcium reduction by 83% - which is pretty amazing. To see the test data click on the link below:

You can also learn more on their website:

One note in the video, I probably could have wrapped the wires a little tighter – for best results the wires need to be tightly wrapped around the pool pipe. Also, the maximum pool pipe size is 2” which is pretty typical of the PVC pipe size in the United States so that shouldn't be an issue. The results are pretty amazing and the manufacturer offers a 100 day money back guarantee with he product.

If you are a pool service professional you can order the Aqau-Rex at SCP or Superior Pool Products. In the Las Vegas area Leslie's Pools carries the Aqau-Rex. Or you can order it on Amazon here:

Pool Blaster Pulse Battery Operated Pool & Spa Vacuum with Mountable Charging Station!

The Pool Blaster Pulse by Water Tech is a unique Cordless, Rechargeable Pool & Spa Vacuum. It combines the fixed vacuum head of the Catfish Model with the larger debris chamber of the Centennial model to produce a compact and powerful cleaner. It also comes with a wall mountable Charging Base where you can charge and store the cleaner when not in use. The Pulse has many great features which I will go over for you here.

The Pulse is a very compact and versatile vacuum. I like that the cleaner has some weight to it and it feels very balanced on the end of my pool pole. You can connect it directly to a standard pool pole with the Pole Connector adapter or use it to spot vacuum your spa with the included Handle adapter. I show using the Pulse with both of these in the video. The compact size makes this ideal for your spa or to spot vacuum your above ground or in-ground pool.

The unit comes almost completely assembled. All you need to do is attach the Vacuum Head to the Pulse. I like the fixed hard plastic vacuum head as it never gets bent and I think the hard plastic head makes vacuum easier. It has a large debris opening and brushes on the bottom so picking up dirt and debris is very easy. The Filter Cone is designed to stop debris and dirt but it won't pick up very fine dust. If you have very fine dust in your spa or pool you may want to opt for the Pool Blaster Max Li with a Sand/Silt bag. But for most situations the Pulse does a great job with dirt and debris.

I really like the Charging Base of the Pulse. It can be mounted to your garage wall and you can store and charge the Pulse on it. Note that the anchors and screws are not included but most everyone has some lying around. Use the anchors if you are mounting it to drywall as the unit is heavy and without the anchors the Charging Base will come right off the wall. But it is really convenient to charge and store the Pulse like those old time Dust Buster cleaners for your garage and car.

It takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge the Pulse and then you get a good 45 minutes of cleaning time out of it. The dedicated on/off switch makes turning the unit on and off a breeze and the fact that
the battery is completely water sealed allows for easy worry free use.

I like the power of this unit and the very large debris chamber. The Pool Blaster Catfish is similar but with a very small debris bag. The pulse can hold a lot of debris. I also like the fact that the debris chamber or Filter Sleeve is very easy to clean. Just hose of the clear plastic Filter Sleeve and the Filter Cone and you are ready to go again. It couldn't be easier.

So if you are looking for a good battery operated cleaner for your pool or spa, check out the Pulse by Water Tech.

Common Mistakes and Errors You Can Make with Your Pool Care and Tips to Avoid Them

One of the things that can happen with a pool and pool equipment is user error. When you purchase a house with a pool or start your pool service business there is no owners manual and many times you learn by trial and error. Below are three of the common mistakes I see that a homeowner will make with their swimming pool and equipment. Listen to the Podcast to here more mistakes and to hear details about all three of these.

Failure to add water
This is probably the #1 failure I see on a daily basis. Many pools do not have an in-deck Autofill system so it is up to the pool owner to add water to the pool each week. Newer pools have a safety feature in the skimmer to prevent the pump from running dry but older pools do not. If the water is left low for even a short period of time, leaks will happen and the pool motor can burn out. This is one of the easiest things to correct, check and add water to the pool weekly. In the Summer in most regions figure to loose one to two inches of water each with from evaporation. Ideal pool water level is right in the middle of the skimmer opening. The pool will stay much cleaner with the correct water level and you will avoid a host of expensive repairs.

On the flip side to this is failing to turn the water off while filling the pool. This happens to almost every customer. Try setting your phone alarm or turn on your stove timer. I don't fill customer's pools because of liability but if I am at a vacant property I will fill it on occasion. I always set my truck keys on the fill valve so that I don't leave the account with the water running.

Not Emptying the Skimmer or Pump Baskets:
Just as bad as not filling the pool is not cleaning the skimmer or pump baskets on a weekly basis. The debris can clog up either or both baskets and this also can prevent the pool pump from priming. This will also cause the pool not to filter properly and the water quality will suffer. It is very easy thing to do and you should check and empty both the pump and skimmer basket each week. Also, I suggest adding a large rock to the skimmer basket as in many cases they will float up after the pool turns off spilling debris everywhere – the rock will keep it down in the skimmer.

One error I often see when the customer empties the pump basket is not filling the pump up with water before putting the lid back on the pump. The pump will prime up much better with water in the pump pot area. Also, I have seen customer's drop the pump lid O-Ring out onto the ground and put the lid back on without it. The pump will not prime without the O-Ring on the pump lid. Make sure the O-Ring is on there and in good shape.

Failure to Turn the Pool on:
If you have a stand alone VS pump there is a dedicated on/off button and many customers will turn the pool off when using it – with this button. But if you don't hit the on/off button when you are done using the pool it will remain off all week. So if you are going to use the pool in the afternoons, I suggest programming it to run in the early AM and turn off by 3 pm to avoid this issue. I see this a lot on my pool route and I also have left a pool off by mistake all week – oops.

Also similar to this is when you use your attached spa and forget to turn the valves back to pool mode when finished. I can't tell you how many times I have went into the backyard and saw a perfectly clear and sparkling spa and a cloudy or algae filled pool. The spa was left running all week while the pool was off all week. So after using the spa be sure to turn the valves back to pool mode to avoid leaving the poo off all week.

Choosing an Automatic Pool Cleaner for your Pool: Suction, Pressure or a Robotic Cleaner

There are three types of cleaners to choose from for your pool care needs. Prices start as low as $100 and if you want the top of the line cleaner with all the bells and whistles you can spend over $1500. So there is a cleaner for everyone's budget and in this Podcast I go over the choices between a Suction side, Pressure side and Robotic Pool Cleaner.

Robotic Cleaners:
A good Robotic cleaner with all the bells and whistles will run you over $1,500 in most cases. Quite an investment but you do get a good return for your money. Today's robotic cleaners are much improved over the 1st generation which came out a few years ago. The motors are more reliable and longer lasting, they can now clean the walls and tile line and there are added features like a programmable cleaning cycle, remote control and an anti-tangle cord swivel. Most of the higher end Robotic cleaners come with a 2 or 3 year warranty. They are that well built and reliable and the manufacturer can offer the longer warranty since it is unlikely you will have to use it.

Some of the benefits of a Robotic Cleaner are:

It runs independent from your pool system which means your filtration system stays cleaner and it doesn't matter if your equipment is old or not  functioning well.

There are no hoses to worry about and once you
are done cleaning the pool you can remove the Robotic cleaner and store it.

They clean the pool very well in most cases -the more expensive models will even clean the tile
line.

The negative factors are a high price point in most cases and the need to send it out for service vs fixing any problems yourself. Most now come with at least a 2 year warranty so that is not a deal breaker. They are highly reliable and effective pool cleaners.

Pressure Side and Return Side Cleaners:
Pressure Side cleaners are extremely effective. They have a large debris opening and a large bag on top for debris. They can clean a large pool in 2- 3 hours or less. The drawbacks are that they need a separate booster pump installed and a dedicated return line. So usually Pressure Cleaners are installed when the pool is constructed or remodeled.

I have several pressure cleaners on my pool route and they leave the pools spotless each week. If you are having your pool built or remodeled maybe consider a Pressure Cleaner.

The Return Side cleaner is a great option if you have a newer pool with 1 1/2" threaded return lines. This cleaner connects right into your existing return lines and works much like a Pressure cleaner with the exception that no booster pump is needed. I have these on several accounts and love them.

The only major drawback is that since you need to restrict one or more return jets to generate sufficient pressure the skimming action of the pool is reduced. It is not a deal breaker but something to be aware of. So if you have lots of large debris in your pool and think a Pressure Side cleaner would work, try a non-booster pump Return side cleaner as an alternative to remodeling your pool.

Suction Side Cleaners:

This is the most familiar type of cleaner to most consumers and the most popular type. A suction cleaner works off of your pools existing pump and attached to the skimmer or a side/ vacuum port in your pool. Depending on the pool and type of debris this can be the most effective and cost effective cleaner type for you. Most suction side cleaners retail for $400 or less.

The Suction side cleaner is the one most popular on my pool route as they are affordable, effective and there are a lot of different models to chose from. In most cases I will suggest a good suction side cleaner since they are also easy to set up and easy to repair when something breaks.
Here is a a listing on my website of the Top Cleaners in each Category.

Pool Equipment Lifespan and Replacement Cost Averages

If your new to pool ownership by having a pool constructed or purchasing a house with a pool one thing you have already learned is that having a pool can be expensive. I am not talking about just the chemicals you need for each pool season but the electricity use and the replacement and repair of the pool equipment over time. These two cost, higher utility bills and equipment replacement can really strain your household budget.

The best way to save money on your utility bills is to replace your standard single speed pump with a Variable Speed Pump or VS pump. This will significantly lower your electricity bill each month by dropping your total usage down. I will go over this in a separate article in more detail but if you can make the switch do it. Your single speed pool pump is probably your home's number one energy consumer next to your Air Conditioner.

I wanted to touch more on equipment replacement costs and how long a piece of equipment will last from my experience in the industry. Like everything else they don't make products like they used to. Nothing seems to last as long as it should and that is the same thing we run into in the pool industry nowadays. Let me list the pool equipment for you with their serviceable lifespan and replacement cost. I also like using a yearly sinking fund to help budget for overall equipment replacement cost. I go over this more in the Podcast audio attached to this article.

Pool Motor:
This is the piece of equipment that you will be replacing most often if you have a standard single speed pump. If you have a Variable Speed pump the motor will last a very long time – 10 years plus. But for a standard single speed pump you will get 3-5 years out of it at best. Then you will need to replace it. Typical cost for having a new one installed is $400-$700 depending on your region and the pump HP rating. This will be the most common piece of equipment you will be replacing.

Pool Pump:
The pool pump is the wet end where the pump basket sits as well as the motor on back. Typically they last several years before needing replacement but figure every 10-12 years or after 3-4 motor replacements. The parts do wear and age over time and it is a good idea to just change the whole thing out over time. Again, I suggest a VS pump if your single speed pump is due for a replacement. A good Variable Speed pump will run you $900-$1,500 installed.

Pool Filter:
The pool filter shell is usually made our of fiberglass and will last upwards of 10-15 years before you see cracks in the tank or fiberglass flaking. Some filters like the Sta-Rite System 3 filters will probably last 100 years – those shells are so thick and well made. If you have a smaller single cartridge filter figure about 8-10 years before you start to see cracking. Sand filter shells are very long lasting also but for your typical DE or large Cartridge Filter the tanks do wear out over time.

The internal DE grids will last about 3-5 years and then you will need to replace all 8 grids. A single Cartridge for a smaller filter will last maybe 1 year and then need replacement. The larger 4 Cartridge filters will require Cartridge replacements every 3-4 years. DE Grids rn about $30 each and depending on the Cartridge you are looking at $30-$70 per cartridge. The System 3 being the excepting with cost of upwards of $400 for both Cartridges. A typical large filter installed will cost $1,000-$1,400 depending on the size, type and region of the country.

Pool Heater:
The pool heater is the most expensive piece of equipment and having a new one installed will run you $2,000-$3,000 depending on the BTU size and your region. You can keep your heater running with part replacements but figure 8-12 years you will need a new one installed. The plus side is that the newer heaters are more efficient and better built than your old one and every year they make improvements. But they are pretty expensive to replace.

Salt System:
Your typical salt cell will last about 10,000 hours at 100% output. So if you run your pool all season at 100% output figure to get 3-4 years out of the cell. The system itself is typically long lasting but you probably want to upgrade the entire system every 8-10 years as newer and better ones become available. You can get a completely new system installed from $900-$1,400 and most salt cells will run you $400-$600. A salt water system will cost you more to operate in the long run but there are great benefits from having one - mainly you will not need to worry about adding chlorine to your pool week to week.

So that is the most common pool equipment that you typically will find at your home and the average lifespan and replacement cost. To learn more listen to the Podcast attached to this article.
