All About IPSSA

I know the importance of a group and that is one reason why I started my online coaching group. One industry group that has set the standard for all those that followed has been IPSSA - Independent Pool and Spa Service Association. Anyone who has been in the pool industry for even a short length of time has heard of IPSSA.

I recently sat down with Kelli Carrillo who is the Sacramento City IPSSA Chapter President and she highlights the benefits of joining IPSSA and also has a Facebook group geared towards the woman in the industry:

PGP (Pool Girl Pro) Industry Training Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1288834038118484

Here is more about IPSSA from their website:

About IPSSA from their website https://www.ipssa.com/

“OUR MISSION
The Independent Pool and Spa Service Association, Inc. exists for the mutual professional benefit and growth of its members and for the continued improvement of the pool and spa industry.

HISTORY
IPSSA was formed in 1988 as a result of a merger between IPSA and Cal-IPSA. Those two organizations were a part of the original association founded in 1961 for the purpose of pool service technicians banding together to help each other in times of illness or disability.

CODE OF ETHICS
As a member of the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association, Inc., I will utilize my professional knowledge and skilled practical workmanship in providing quality customer service. To that end, it will be my responsibility to keep informed of developments in the pool and spa industry, including new techniques and product applications.

My second obligation will be to IPSSA members by giving them any professional assistance they need, including sick route coverage. In this endeavor, I shall respect their clientele and not solicit the business of, or place advertising, promotional materials, or stickers on the property of said clientele while providing Sick Route coverage.

My final responsibility will be to my community and its citizens. I will strive to communicate the necessity for pool safety and other issues of importance to pool and spa owners.

In these ways, I will promote the ideals and objectives of the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association, Inc.”

I think with anything in life being part of a group is really important. For the pool service industry where you are mostly out there on your own each day this is even more important since you are basically on your own and isolated from any real source of help. It is not at all like working in an office where in the next room you can reach out to someone when you are in a pinch. Learning from others in the industry is one way for you to get better at what you do and learn to work through different problems and issues you face out there day in and day out.

Here are some of the benefits of joining IPSSA:

david@swimmingpoollearning.com

Here are the different models currently available the plumbing union size and sand capacity:
88012526 MFV17  1.5”   90    lbs of sand
88012527 MFV20  1.5”  150   lbs of sand
88012528 MFV24         1.5”   275  lbs of sand
88012545 MFV24B 2.0”  275   lbs of sand
88012529 MFV27A 1.5”    400 lbs of sand
88012530 MFV27         2.0”    400 lbs of sand
88012531 MFV31A 1.5”   700  lbs of sand
88012532 MFV31         2.0”   700 lbs of sand
88012533 MFV35     2.0”   950  lbs of sand

I think the best feature is the easy access to the sand and the laterals inside. You don’t need any tools to remove the clamp holding the Multi-port on. It is a very simple and easy process to add the sand, change the sand or fix a broken lateral. It makes sense to make this easy access since sand changes or repairing broken laterals is something that is common with sand filters.

The multi-port valve on top also moves very freely and again, there is no reason to make it stiff and hard to turn. It also features a very large handle making turning It even easier. Emzux designed the filter to be as user friendly as possible.

For Salt Water Pools:

“Dear Valued Customer,

As your service company we are always striving to provide the best service possible using the most updated methods and products available.  Every once in a while, a product comes along that will increase the quality of the service we can provide at a minimal cost.

PoolRx is that product:

PoolRx Mineral Technology uses nature’s own purifiers to eliminate all algae (even microscopic algae you can’t see) and free up chlorine to be more active and available in the water.  This allows a lower level of chlorine to eliminate organics, bacteria and viruses.  The result is cleaner, safer, algae free water all season.

PoolRx improves Water Quality – The unique mineral formula works synergistically with low levels of Salt chlorine leaving you with water that looks and feels like never before.

With PoolRx, we can turn down your salt chlorine generator, typically by 50% of its previous setting. This will allow us to use less acid to balance pH, which will improve the bather experience.

The PoolRx mineral formula also includes a natural de-scaler, that will extend the time between cell cleanings.

Less generation and less cleaning of the salt cell is proven to significantly prolong the life of the salt cell, saving you money.

We simply place the PoolRx unit in your pump basket or skimmer and the minerals packed inside the alloy cylinder dissolve into your pool water. The PoolRx minerals are rejuvenated when they pass back through the unit during circulation.  This process allows the minerals to regain their ionic charge, and last for up to 6 months.  In extreme cases, we may need to add additional PoolRx Booster minerals to the water depending on bather load and water conditions.

We highly recommend adding this amazing mineral technology to your salt pool. If you agree, please reply to this email and let us know.  A one-time charge of $65.00 will be added to your next bill.

Best Regards,

Metal in Your Swimming Pool & Stain Treatment

Metals in your pool and staining from metals dropping out of solution can be a big problem for pool owners and pool service techs. CuLator makes a whole slew of products that will help treat and eliminate metals from your pool water and reverse the staining.

I sat down with Joe Laurino who is the CEO and President of Periodic Products which is the parent company of the CuLator Metal Stain Eliminator and Stain Preventer products and we recorded a series of podcasts on meal staining and metal stain removal which are listed here for you.

Metal Staining 101 with Joe Laurino of CuLator Metal Stain Eliminator and Stain Preventer:

The first step with any type of staining is to determine if it is an organic or non-organic stain. Organic stains can look a lot like a metal stain so you will need to test the area to see if the stain lifts with a vitamin C tablet as Joe suggests. If it is a metal stain then you will have to follow some simple steps to remove it and remove the metal ions from the pool water.

Here is more about the treatment and the kit includes everything you will need:
“Most pool stain treatments only include a stain treatment and metal sequestering agent.  Well, that is not enough to stop the cycle of swimming pool staining.  To complete the pool stain treatment process, you MUST use CuLator to ELIMINATE the metals from the water, or your stains and discoloration will return.  Stain removers work to take the stains off the surface of your pool.  Sequestering agents suspend the metals in water.  ONLY CuLator Metal Eliminator eliminates the metals that cause the stains on your pool and spa surface.

The No-Drain Metal Stain Eliminator Kit is the CURE for pool staining!  End the vicious cycle of staining with this easy-to-use kit!  Includes everything you need to eliminate metal stains from your pool or spa, without draining, and keeps them from coming back!  Removes iron, copper, manganese, cobalt, and many other metal stains.  Helps prevent them from returning.” with CuLator Metal Eliminator Ultra 4.0.  Good for all surfaces work in fresh or saltwater and has no phosphates.  Also eliminates brown water and green water caused by metals!

If you are interested in the Periodic Products - CuLator No Drain Metal Stain Kit you can find it here or at your local Leslie’s Pool Supply: https://lesliespool.com/culator-no-drain-metal-stain-kit/14512.html

About CuLator:
“CuLator is a patented polymer contained in a little bag which, when placed into the skimmer basket or the pump basket, grabs and binds stain-causing metals out of the water to prevent pool surface staining and water discoloration.  CuLator eliminates stain-causing metals like iron, rust, copper, and manganese.  CuLator is manufactured by Periodic Products Inc. in the USA.

CuLator® Metal Eliminator and Stain Preventer is a patented technologically advanced product designed to rapidly eliminate metals from fresh and saltwater. CuLator takes conventional chelating or sequestering agent groups and binds them to a unique, insoluble, and non-toxic polymer backbone. This allows metals to be physically removed and eliminated from the pool, spa, or fountain water, rather than temporarily sequestering metals in the water. The chemistry to produce these polymers was developed over 25 years of scientific research.  So, what does all that mean?  CuLator does not dissolve in pool water, grabs metals out of the water and off sequestering agents, and keeps them locked inside the bag so that you can ELIMINATE the metals from your pool and spa! When metals are removed from pool and spa water, staining and water turning colors are prevented.”

Tips on Selling Automatic Pool Cleaners to Your Pool Route Customers

I love automatic pool cleaners and think that every pool you service should have one. There are many companies that charge more for pools without cleaners or just don’t take them on. I try to sell one to every customer or drop a “rental” unit into any pool without one. They just make your day so much better out on your route.

There are several benefits of having an automatic cleaner in every pool. The first is that it will save you a lot of time at each pool. Look at it like having your manual vacuum and hose in the pool all week long and you are vacuuming the pool 8 hours a day. You would not stand there vacuuming for 8 hours each day and that is why they call them automatic cleaners. Depending on the type depends on how it is connected or not connected to your pool. But essentially that is what it will do for your week in and week out.

It also will leave your pool swim-ready each week which is great if your clients use the pool throughout the season. Again, get the image of you vacuuming your pool all day and you can see why your pool will be good to go at any given time. This will allow you to focus on more important things and with the automatic cleaner running in the pool you won’t need to waste time and energy vacuuming a pool each week.

With the automatic cleaner running you can focus on other aspects of the pool service like balancing the pool correctly and spending more time adjusting the water chemistry based on the LSI chart or app.

Having a cleaner running can also prevent staining on the pool surface. Sometimes dirt will have metal ions in it and leaves will certainly stain the pool bottom if left there for a long period of time. A staple or other small metal piece can also fall into the pool and I have seen pools saved from a rust stain by an automatic cleaner picking up the small metal item.

The bottom line with more pools with automatic cleaners the quicker you can get through your day. This means you can add more service accounts to your day and increase your overall profit in your business. That is why it is not a bad idea to have some cleaners of your own that you can drop into customer’s pools on a rental basis. You can either charge them a little more or call it a wash since you are saving that much more time at their pool. I also like dropping in cleaners I rebuild after salvaging them from other service accounts. These are cleaners I take out when I sell a new one or a cleaner a customer has sitting in their backyard. Suction cleaners are easy to repair and reuse and if you have been doing service for as long as I have, you have a ton of extra hoses for them.

Here is a rundown on the three types of cleaners available for your pool.

Suction Side Cleaners:
This is the most familiar type of cleaner for most consumers and the most popular type. A suction cleaner works off your pool's existing pump and attached to the skimmer or a side/ vacuum port in your pool. Depending on the pool and type of debris this can be the most effective and cost-effective cleaner type for you. Most suction side cleaners retail for $400 or less.

The Suction side cleaner is the one most popular on my pool route as they are affordable, effective and there are a lot of different models to choose from. In most cases, I will suggest a good suction side cleaner since they are also easy to set up and easy to repair when something breaks.

Pressure Side and Return Side Cleaners:
Pressure Side cleaners are extremely effective. They have a large debris opening and a large bag on top for debris. They can clean a large pool in 2- 3 hours or less. The drawbacks are that they need a separate booster pump installed and a dedicated return line. So usually Pressure Cleaners are installed when the pool is constructed or remodeled.

Return Side Cleaner (Polaris 360):
The Return Side cleaner is a great option if you have a newer pool with 1 1/2" threaded return lines. This cleaner connects right into your existing return lines and works much like a Pressure cleaner with the exception that no booster pump is needed. I have these on several accounts and love them.

The only major drawback is that since you need to restrict one or more return jets to generate enough pressure the skimming action of the pool is reduced. It is not a deal-breaker but something to be aware of. So, if you have lots of large debris in your pool and think a Pressure Side cleaner would work, try a non-booster pump Return side cleaner as an alternative to remodeling your pool.

ROBOTIC POOL CLEANERS:
My opinion of Robotic Cleaners has changed over the recent years and now I would suggest them along with Suction Cleaners and Pressure Cleaners. One reason is that robotic cleaners are more reliable, and the manufacturers signify this by offering up to a three-year limited warranty, some offer a two-year bumper to bumper warranty if purchased from a retail pool store. The overall design of robotic cleaners has improved so the motors, belts, and drives all are longer lasting.

Another great benefit is that running a robotic cleaner in your pool cost less than $1.00 a day as it converts the 120 volts power down to 12 volts, so they are the most affordable cleaner to operate. Since they also pump anywhere from 60 to 80 gallons of water per minute, you can run your filter less as the robotic cleaner circulates your pool water. For a larger pool, this is a great bonus.

Emaux E-Power Pump Review (International Market Only)

The Emaux E-Power pump is packed with tones of great features. The first thing you need to know is that it is an international product sold in over 90 countries around the world, excluding the United States. So if you are stateside sorry, this amazing pump is not yet available to you. But for those around the world where Emaux products are sold, this is a solid buy.

About Emaux:
Emaux is a recognized global manufacturer that meets and surpasses the expectations of customers with best-in-class products and services. With quality at the heart of everything we do, we offer specialized products to swimming pools, spas, aquatic centers, water parks, aquaculture, public aquariums, water features, and water treatment projects. Headquartered in Hong Kong, Emaux enjoys a truly global network with offices in Europe and China.

For over 35 years, we have been actively engaged in key water projects worldwide and worked closely with industrial consultants, developers, and engineers alike.

E-Power pump
First off this is a literal plug-in and play device. It comes with a 220V cord attached so you simply just need to plug the pump in – no direct wiring needed. We typically do not have 220V plug-in pumps in the USA and I would of course make sure that your outlet is wired for 220V.

It comes backed by a 2-year manufacturer warranty and it has an IPX5 Waterproof standard, built-in thermal protection, and overload protection. It has also been pressure tested up to 50PSI (3.5 Bar). It is also a self-priming pump although you do need to fill the pump up with water after you clean out the basket. So you are getting a rock-solid pump for sure.

The one thing that I really like about this pump is the huge wet end with the giant pump basket. It has a giant 5 liter (1.3 gallons) capacity! It would take a whole lot to clog up this pump basket and the larger wet end ensures greater flow and that translates into higher water quality. The inlet and outlet are also 2.5” in diameter which gives this pump even more flow.

Included in the box are the unions to convert it down to 2” plumbing if your pool does not have 2.5” plumbing. So Emaux has not missed that detail. If you do have 2.5” plumbing you can use those included unions also.

The total hp of the pump featured in the video is 2.0 HP. You can also get the E-Pump in 3.0 hp and 4.0 hp. You won’t find a more robust single-speed pump on the market today.

Polaris P39 (3900 Sport) Unclogging the Venturi Jets

The Polaris pressure cleaner is designed to run smoothly and last for decades but sometimes you may find it on the bottom of the pool not running. There are several moving parts to the cleaner and sometimes it is a mechanical problem. Often it is something very simple and one thing often overlooked is a clogged venturi.

How the cleaner operates can sometimes be an important clue to finding out the problem of why the cleaner is not moving. The Polaris cleaner it operates on a separate return line with a dedicated booster pump. There is basically only one failsafe that will prevent debris from clogging the cleaner and that is a thimble-like screen in the cleaners feed hose line. Once debris gets past this point it has the potential of clogging up the cleaner.

So water is feed into the cleaner from the dedicated cleaner booster pump to the cleaner and it travels through a series of smaller tubs on the bottom of the cleaner and then out the top of the cleaner through the three venturi jets. Debris can also get caught in these tubes but usually, the water pressure is sufficient to push the debris into the venturi jets. Since the venturi jet opening is much smaller than the tube, this is usually the final resting place of the debris. The venturi mount as you will is known as the Polaris Water Management System.

To test the cleaner and to see if the venturi is clogged you can use a simple garden hose. Although the cleaner does require much higher pressure to operate, testing the cleaner does not require as much pressure. Attach the hose to the back of the cleaner where the feed hose connected to and turn it on. You should see a good steady stream of water coming out of all three venturi jets. If one or more has weak stream chances are the venturi is clogged with some debris. In that case, take a wire and slide it into each venturi and try to break up any debris jamming it. Usually, that is enough to clear any debris in the venturi lines.

Occasionally you will need to take apart the entire cleaner and remove the Water Management System and do the same steps. With it off of the cleaner, it is easier to access and cleanout. Taking it off requires you to take the cleaner partially apart so it is a step reserved for a more severe clog. But it is an option and a way to remove a more stubborn clog.

The best thing you can do is to prevent even a possibility of a clog. When you backwash or clean your pool filter is would be a good idea to disconnect your Polaris cleaner from the wall with the Quick Disconnect. This will prevent any debris from entering the cleaner line and possibly getting past the screen in the feed hose. You also want to make sure the screen in the feed hose is also intact and does not have any holes in it. Preventing a clog is always the best practice.

The Safety and Use of Borate in Your Swimming Pool With Bob Lowry

I recently sat down with Bob Lowry who is probably is the smartest person in the industry when it comes to pool chemistry. We spend some time talking about borates and their benefits and also the safety concerns around borates.

Here are the proven benefits of having a Borate level of 30-50 ppm:
Lower Chlorine usage: The Borate helps reduce chlorine usage by eliminating Carbon Dioxide and also by keeping the pH stable. Chlorine last longer when the pH is right at 7.6-7.8. When the chlorine is in the ideal range the killing element in chlorine the HOCI is at the most balanced percentage so the chlorine in a pool with a pH of 7.4 is 30% more effective than in a pool with a pH of 8.0. This is a big factor in creating the safest swim environment and the borates will keep the pH much more stable and in turn, make the chlorine much more effective.

pH is stable:
The pH won't change much in a pool with Borate in it. So, if you have a Salt Water Pool this is a must since the pH tends to rise dramatically. In fact, in a Salt Water Pool the pH can rise to over 8.4 very rapidly. You will find yourself putting tons of acid in each week just to keep the pH below 7.8. With borates in the pool, the pH will be stable and easy to control.  It is a must for a pool with a Salt Water Generator. It also will keep your salt cell from building up calcium rapidly since it sequesters the Calcium in the water. This means the salt cell will remain clean and your salt system will run much more efficiently.

Water is more sparkling:
The Borate is more reflective so when the sun hits the pool the water will really sparkle. The fact that it sequesters calcium will give the water an added clarity and you will notice the sparkle is almost blinding. The difference is very marked and noticeable and it is a good bonus benefit of borates.

Softer and less irritating water:
The water feels softer and doesn't burn your eyes. It also will keep your skin and hair hydrated so after swimming your skin won't be as dried out. Borax has been used for a very long time as a softener for laundry. You will find it in the laundry aisle and it makes sense that it will also make the water feel softer and prevent dry skin.

Less Algae growth:
Boric Acid is a known Biostat. This prevents the algae cell from forming and multiplying. Thus, a pool with a Borate level between 30-50 ppm will prevent algae growth. Since borate prevents the algae cell from growing, algae blooms will be a thing of the past. No more algaecides or shocking the pool, algae just won’t grow in your pool any longer.

MX6 & MX6 Elite Full Rebuild

I go over replacing parts in your Zodiac MX6 if it is not moving in the pool or not turning. The thing I really like about the MX6 vs the MX8 is how easy it is to work on. Not that the MX8 is difficult, but there are fewer parts in the MX6 and it just is compact and easier to work on. You will also be able to isolate the problem easier on the M6 and get it up and running like new again in a matter of minutes.

Watch the video to see full repair:

One of the drawbacks of the MX6 is all of the moving parts wear out over time. Fortunately, the parts are inexpensive and easy to install. I would say after 1 ½  to 2 years you will need to start to replace some parts, and this depends on the pool run time also. But figure at the 2-year mark replacing all of these parts featured in this video series would be a good idea.

This first video covers what to do if the MX6 stops going thru its turn cycle. Very common in the MX8 but less common in the MX6 since there is only one Directional Device in it. The MX6 uses the Directional Device Side A, part #R0524700 – you will often see it listed for the MX8 like this “Baracuda R0524700 Side A Direction Control Device Replacement for Baracuda MX8 Pool Cleaner.”
The same part is used for both cleaners.

In this video, I cover replacing the in your MX6. After changing both Tracks and the Engine (Part 1 and 2 of the series) and you notice the MX6 is still moving slowly than the last part to swap out is the Scrubber Assembly. This part is also known as the Cyclonic Turbine Assembly and it is a very simple and easy part to change. This part is constantly spinning when the cleaner is moving and usually even if it is wearing out will still spin. But you will notice a slowdown in the MX6 as a result of this. Fortunately, unlike the MX8 there is only one of these in the MX6 and it is relatively inexpensive at around $12.00-$15.00

The Scrubber is the last moving part of the MX6. As the water passes over the engine, the tracks begin to move on the pool floor and the Cyclonic Scrubber spins as a result of this. I find this part to be very long-lasting but when I do a complete rebuild with the engine and tracks I simply just change this out also. That way once you drop the MX6 back into the pool it is practically a brand new cleaner.

If you want to make your MX6 an MX6 Elite watch this video:
Zodiac "MX6 Elite" - Adding the Cyclonic Scrubbing Kit to Your MX6: https://youtu.be/yiggOIMU3j4

All you need to do to make your MX6 and “Elite” version is to add the Retrofit kit Scrubber to the cleaner. The part is called Zodiac Cyclonic Scrubbing Turbine Assembly MX8 Pool Cleaner R0714300 and you can purchase it here: http://amzn.to/2ntulJL

This kit is for the MX8 so you will get two Scrubbers in the box so you can keep one as a spare for future use.

Balancing Your Pool With Target Ranges by Bob Lowry

Why is balancing your pool so important? The main reason I think and one overlooked at times is that the water can look great and inviting but it could actually be a breeding ground for pathogens that can make a swimmer very ill. Bob Lowry is the foremost expert on swimming pool chemistry and he answers these questions and more in the podcast series I recorded with him.

Bob Lowry teaches Target Chemistry and here are his recommended target numbers. Not a range but a specific number to shoot for.

Sanitizer 3.0 ppm
After the alkalinity & pH are brought into range, the next adjustment is the sanitizer. Liquid Chlorine or Bleach is the most common and least expensive of the available sanitizers. The acceptable range is 1.5 - 3 ppm, though 4 - 5 ppm is absolutely fine. A commercial spa should be maintained at much higher levels - 5 - 6 ppm. Bob Lowry has the Target at 3.0 ppm so you should always aim for that for your residential pool.

A residential pool should be maintained at 3.0 ppm. The higher levels ( 4 - 5 ppm) should be established, prior to a large party or heat spell. Try not to allow the levels to drop below 3 ppm, as this will prevent the need to shock or take other corrective action after the party.

ALKALINITY 90 ppm
There are a number of factors that contribute to the "balance of the water." The most important is the pH and the alkalinity. The alkalinity is the ability of the water to buffer the pH (or buffer chemicals that may affect the pH). The alkalinity is like an auto-pilot or cruise-control for the pH.

If the alkalinity is out of the acceptable range, then any small factor will cause a wild swing in the pH. This is called "pH bounce." Because of this, the alkalinity is the first thing that should be brought into line when balancing the water.

An ideal range for the alkalinity is 100-120 ppm (though 80 - 140 ppm is acceptable).

pH 7.5
The pH of the water determines if it is acidic or basic. Either extreme can have disastrous effects on the pool finish, equipment, or plumbing. When the pH is out of range, bathers may complain of eye discomfort or other ailments.

An acidic pH will cause the water to become aggressive. It will etch the plaster and cement finishes around the pool. Worse yet, it will dissolve the metallic components of the pool. The most expensive metallic component is the copper heat exchanger within the pool heater.

The ideal range for the pH is 7.4 - 7.6 (though 7.2 - 7.8 is acceptable).

HIGH OR LOW TOTAL ALKALINITY:
Total Alkalinity will determine the speed and ease of PH change.
If the starting PH is 7.6 in a 15,000-gallon pool and the Alkalinity is 120 ppm, if you add 1 pint of Muriatic Acid it will drop the PH to 7.0 and the Alkalinity to 105.
If the starting PH is 7.6 in a 15,000-gallon pool and the Alkalinity is 60 ppm, if you add 1 pint of Acid it will drop the PH to 6.7 and the Alkalinity to 26ppm.
So you see it is very important to keep the Alkalinity in the good range of 80-120 ppm. Alkalinity basically determines the waters ability to neutralize the acid.

Low alkalinity will cause:
Etched Plaster
Corroded Metals
Stained plaster
PH to creep, drift lower
Eye & skin irritation

High total Alkalinity will cause:
Scale formation
Cloudy water
Difficulty changing PH or the PH will drift up
Eye & skin irritation

So to adjust high alkalinity down you want to use Muriatic acid or Dry acid. When doing this it is important to test the acid demand before starting to lower the total Alkalinity. Never add more than ½ gallon of acid and don't add acid more than 3 times in one day.
If the total Alkalinity is high in a matter of hours the PH will rise. This happens because high total alkalinity will neutralize the acid. High alkalinity will create a constant high acid demand.

RAISING Total Alkalinity:
use SODIUM BICARB (Alkalinity Up {Baking Soda]) when you want to raise Alkalinity without raising the PH. Soda Ash will raise both at the same time. 20 oz of Alkalinity Up will raise your Alkalinity by 10 ppm (10,000 gallons).

One final note, the type of Sanitizer you use will determine your total Alkalinity level.

If you are using Trichlor 3" tablets, gas chlorine or bromine, the alkalinity should be kept in a higher range as each time these are added it will lower total alkalinity.
A neutral sanitizer like Dichlor (granular chlorine), will not raise or lower total alkalinity so you should try and keep it at 100 ppm.
High PH sanitizers like liquid Chlorine and Cal-hypo (shock) will raise your PH and total alkalinity so you should keep it in the low range 80-100 ppm.

Cyanuric Acid (Conditioner) 50 ppm
You add this to your pool water to protect the chlorine from being burned off rapidly from the Sun's UV rays. without Cyanuric acid (CYA) in your pool water, the chlorine will only last a matter of hours. With the proper level, the chlorine can last 5-10 times longer.

The ideal range is 30-50 ppm although it is okay if it is 80-100 ppm. Any higher and the chlorine starts to become less effective and you will need larger amounts of sanitizer in the water to maintain the chlorine level.

Note that Tri-chlor tablets and Dichlor will both add significant amounts of CYA to your pool water. Limit the use of these or your CYA can rise above 150 ppm or higher in one season.

Calcium Hardness 350 ppm
This is mainly determined by your water source. If your fill water is hard then the pools calcium hardness will be high. The Ideal range varies with surface type but 200-400 ppm is acceptable.

If your Hardness is low:
Water balancing will be difficult
Etching of plaster
Corrosion of pool equipment
Eye & Skin irritation
Foaming

To raise the calcium hardness add calcium chloride

High Hardness:
Scale formation on pool and equipment
Cloudy water
Eye & skin irritation
Water balancing will be difficult

To lower calcium hardness you will need to drain all or some of the water and refill the pool.
