Water Tech Pool Blaster Battery Powered Vacuums

Battery operated pool cleaners - you can't be serious?

Here ares some comments from the internet's most popular and most honest swimming pool forum - Troublefreepools.com:

"Have had my PB Max for a couple years now and LOVE it!"

"I have the Pool Blaster Max (the blue one). Love it. Got it through ebay and Amazon (had one for a few years and the battery went...bought a second one as soon as it went!) for a pretty good deal."

"I have the rechargable Max. Use it more than my Pool Rover Jr. if there's no sticks twigs or such in the pool. And if so, I usually just dip that stuff out before firing up the Max. I use it a LOT in between times I actually really, really HAVE to vacuum. Get the little inside silt/liner bags to go with it too. It really helps capture some finer stuff. Highly recommended by me."

I picked these comments because if you know the pool forums they can be brutal. And these comments also verify my testing of the Pool Blaster line.

Water Tech:

The company behind the Pool Blaster cleaners has been doing this for a long time now. You can visit their website: Watertechcorp.com  and read about them for yourself. They have been making the Pool Blaster since 2001 and are constantly improving their product line. They offer a one year warranty on the Pool Blaster Line and stand behind their product.  I've called their tech support on three occasions just to check and each time the person was knowledgeable and friendly. Always a bonus to be dealing with a good solid company in case there ever is a problem.

Pool Blaster Product Line:

The Pool Blaster line is a unique type of pool vacuum. They use no hoses, no cords and are battery powered. Some are rechargeable and others use regular batteries. They are very convenient and handy and will help keep your pool or spa looking great every week.

In this article I will go over a few of Water Tech's more popular Pool Blaster models and you can see which model might be right for your pool or spa needs.

Pool Blaster MAX & MAX CG:

The MAX is Water Tech's flagship cleaner. It is an all around great cleaner. It has a large debris area, plenty of power and has a low enough profile to vacuum well in 1 ft of water. The MAX has a power rating of 300 and the MAX CG has a rating of 400. You can really feel the suction, just drop it in the water and stick your finger in the mouth. It will pull your finger in - it is that strong. On a single charge it will vacuum for about one hour - In my testing I got a good solid 40 minutes out of mine. I use it everyday on my pool route and it is working very well. If you are vacuuming very fine dirt or algae dust you might need a microfilter bag insert. So far I have had no problems with my units and they do come with a one year warranty in case of mechanical defects. An all around great vacuum.

Pool Blaster AQUA BROOM:

I use the AQUA BROOM a lot on my pool route. It is great for detached and attached spas and water features. I like the fact that it is compact and I can carry with me and drop it in a spa whenever it is needed. It clips right on to my pool pole so it is easy to use. The suction in pretty amazing - it makes the Spa Wand I used look like a joke. In a matter of 30 seconds a small spa will be spotless. If you have a fiberglass spa or even an attached spa that gets pretty dirty then the AQUA BROOM would be an excellent choice. Watch the video to learn more about this great tool.  It runs off of "D" batteries.

Pool Blaster Battery Powered Leaf Vac:

This is by far the best thing I have used in a long time. I have a standard Leaf Vac that is sitting in my garage. For one it is a pain to drag back since I usually will need to take my 50 ft garden hose also. In the pool I am fighting with the garden hose as I drag it across the pool bottom.

But this Battery Powered Leaf Vac is great. It runs off of  8 "AA" Batteries and is so simple to use that I am using it like crazy. There is no garden hose to drag around, it is light weight and compact and it picks up leaves and debris very well. I can Leaf Vac a good size pool in about 10 minutes. It would take me about half that long to set-up the standard Leaf Vac. Just an all around great and handy tool. It has good power and is easy to steer around the pool, a must have if your pool has lots of leaves each week or if your pool route has some "Stinkers" on it.

Pool Blaster PRO 1500:

This last one is for the pool professional or a homeowner who needs an external vacuum separate from his filtration system. There are many things that I like about the Pro 1500. I haven't used my regular vacuum hose attached to a skimmer since I started using the Pro 1500. Here are some of the good points:

*Light and easy to carry back to the customer's pool.
*The pool filter stays clean as the dirt and debris is trapped in the bag in side the Pro 1500.
*Battery last for the complete day and the unit comes with two batteries rated to last a total of 3 hrs.
*It comes with three different debris bags and you can vacuum up dirt and algae no problem.
*The suction is actually very good. It picks up good size debris no problem.

In most cases it is faster than using a regular vacuum attached to the skimmer. You do need to go slower depending on how much dirt and debris is in the pool. And in some cases you will need to stop and empty the debris back and hose it off. Really not a big deal. I will usually vacuum a large pool half way, remove the Pro 1500, empty and clean the bag and drop it back in. Maybe 1 minute and 30 seconds. It is still better than dragging and hooking up the pool hoses and removing the pool hose. It does a really excellent job of vacuuming a pool.

Is a Pool Blaster Vacuum right for you?

I think the Pool Blaster line enhances and makes cleaning your pool or spa quick and easy. They have a cleaner for just about any pool and spa need. They work great. They are durable and well engineered and are backed by Water Tech's one year warranty. You can't go wrong. How to Save a Ton of Money on your Swimming Pool Maintenance

Feeling like it would be better to drain the pool, fill it with dirt and lay grass over the money pit? You are not alone. I hear it all the time, "my pool pump is costing me a fortune in electricity!"  or, "I just spent $300 on chemicals at the pool store this month..." Or, "Nobody told me owning a pool would be so expensive!"

So at least you are not alone. I've put together some tips that will save you a substantial amount of money on both your electric cost and your chemical costs.

Tip #1 & 2: RUN YOUR POOL PUMP AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE
I talk about running your pool just one cycle per day. You will need to know your pool size so here is a video on how to calculate it:

Calculate your pool volume (how many gallons): http://youtu.be/LArc7puehAk

You will also need to know your pump's flow rate. Here is a link to a cheat sheet listing most pool pumps by brand and hp and flow rate:
http://ehs.ncpublichealth.com/faf/pti/docs/Pumps.pdf

You also need to factor in Total Dynamic Head (TDH) - resistance to flow. Here is a good write up on it:
http://www.poolplaza.com/pump-head.shtml

Once you know your pool size (gallons/liter of water), how many Gallons Per minute (GPM) your pool pump pulls and the resistance to flow, you can get a pretty good idea of how long to run your pool pump to achieve one cycle. Not rocket science but it takes some calculating. You can shave off $20-$100 a month on your electric bill by doing this.

Know Your Flow: Here is the best flow meter on the market today. It is easy to install and with this flow meter you will know the exact GPM going through your pool which translates into money savings: http://youtu.be/8WFXje-NWBY
I also have videos on installing the FlowVis in your pool and how to use the FlowVis to calculate how long to run your pool pump.

Tip #3: GET A TEST KIT AND TEST YOUR POOL WATER
Getting a good test kit will eliminate your need to run to the pool store each week to have it tested. If you go into a pool store you will buy something, generally something you don't need. Keeping your water balanced is essential to saving money on your pool.

Test Kit Comparison: Which Kit is the Best?: http://youtu.be/swvweeFOVGk
Taylor Complete FAS-DPD Pool Water Test Kit K-2006: http://youtu.be/vYBEt1rzkeU

Tip #4: USE THE BBB METHOD OF POOL CARE:
Using the BBB Method is a good way to save lots of money on chemical cost and to also avoid the expensive shocks and products found at your local pool store. For example a 1 lb bag of Cal-Hypo 73%
shock is not any stronger than one gallon of 8.75% Clorox Bleach. And it is at least $2.00 more in price. You will also find Alkalinity Up (it is just Baking Soda in a fancy bag) to be twice the price or more of just plain Baking Soda... Here is the BBB Method Playlist-

The BBB Method of Pool Care:

Tip #5: CLEAN YOUR POOL EVERY WEEK
Sounds like a no brainier but you would be surprised. If you pool is full of dirt and leaves the chlorine will be
used up faster and that will cost you money. Removing organic debris each week is essential and this is often overlooked.  Keeping your pump and skimmer basket clean and free of debris will allow your pool to run more efficiently thus increasing circulation.

Tip #6: INVEST IN A GOOD AUTOMATIC CLEANER
Time is money. So if you can save 20-30 minutes each week from cleaning your pool the initial cost of an automatic cleaner and future parts and repairs will be negligible. If you can spend that time working you can pay for that cleaner quickly. It is important to chose the right cleaner for your particular pool so I have put together  a playlist featuring just about every automatic cleaner that is good and on the market today.

Automatic Cleaner Reviews and Tips: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7E44FEAE1310746D

Tip #7: INSTALL A VARIABLE SPEED PUMP WHEN YOUR PUMP DIES
I don't recommend trashing your existing working pump but when the motor dies the pump starts to have
issues, replacing it with a Variable speed pump makes sense. Running at 1500 RPM will be about 200 Watts in electricity. For the average pool running it at that speed for 8-10 hours will give your pool one complete cycle. That is 2000 watts over that time period. About one hour of a standard single speed pump. Wow.  So there is quite the savings on electricity cost for sure. The upfront cost is high but the savings are of course substantial.

Tip #8: DON'T USE YOUR POOL HEATER
Heating your pool for even one day can be costly. Heating it for a week expensive. Heating it for a month, insane. Since pool water temperature is always dropping, especially over night, heating your pool is like throwing money away. If your having a pool party and want to bring the temp up from 75 to 82 that is fine. But to heat your pool on a regular basis will cost you big time. Try it for a week and you will see... in my case I like to heat my pool maybe 5-6 days a month. My gas bill will go from $40 to $160 just for that small time period. It is pretty crazy.

Tip #9: MAINTAIN YOUR POOL YOURSELF
Pool service is a luxury and not a necessity.  If you are on a tight budget than you can't hire a pool guy, gardener or housekeeper. Bummer. No pool service means you save $800-$1,200 a year, no gardener add another $800-$1,500 and no house cleaner $2,500. Life will suck but you will save several thousand dollars a year.

TIP #10: WATCH MY YOUTUBE VIDEOS:
I have over 350 videos and counting so it is a great resource to do it yourself and save even more money on your pool.

Here is my Video Index for you:  https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5608549482946974904#editor/target=post;postID=8543003159498968779;onPublishedMenu=posts;onClosedMenu=posts;postNum=4;src=postname

So if you follow these tips you can feed the kids again, maybe go out to a nice movie and dinner and drive by the pool store and shake your head in memory of all the money you lost.

Salt Water Pools - Myths & Truths

There are a lot of things about a Salt Water Pool also referred to as a Salt System or a Salt Water Generator that fall into the category of a myth. Other things that are true are seen as false and some things that are myths are truths. confused yet? Sounds like the intro to "Lord of the Rings" in fact ;).  I will briefly touch on these and explain the truth about a Salt Water Pool. I will refer to a Salt Pool here as a Salt Water Generator (SWG).

The first thing you need to know is that a SWG uses regular table salt - specifically made for your pool to remove any impurities. It is sold in 40 lbs. bags and labeled "pool salt." This is the only salt you want to add into your pool. All other types could stain the pool surface as some have additives. So stick with clearly labeled bags that say "Pool Salt."

Myth: Salt Water Pools don't use chlorine
The process is quite complex but the SWG will take the salt and convert it into chlorine. Yes, I did say chlorine. A Salt Pool is a Chlorine Pool. It just adds chlorine to your pool in a way that is safe and non-toxic. No chemicals to handle or add. To see how this process is done watch this video: http://youtu.be/GqgM4bTdj94

Myth: Swimming in a Salt Pool will be like swimming in the Ocean
The salinity level of the Ocean is 35,000 ppm. A Human tear is 6,000 ppm and your average salt pool is 3,100 to 3,400 ppm. Technically you can barely taste the salt in the water. So no, it won't be like swimming in the ocean. Not even anywhere close. It does look daunting when you initially charge your pool with salt. Depending on your pool size you will need to add 400-800 lbs of salt. Seems like a lot but in reality it is not. At least not like the Ocean. One ppm is like a single penny in $10,000 dollars. So the salt in your pool will be like $34.00 in $10,000.

Myth: A Salt Water Pool will save me money
No, the only way to save money on your pool is to fill it with dirt and plant grass over it. Having a pool is an expensive venture no matter how you look at it. A SWG will run you anywhere from $1,000 and up and every five years you will be swapping out the salt cell and dropping down another $400-$700. If you are even slightly proficient in math you will see that over a course of five years you could have bought a ton of pool chemicals for that amount. So no it is not a money saver, quite the opposite.

Myth: My decking will be destroyed and my equipment damaged by all that Salt
My Sister-In-Law lives right on the beach in Newport Ca. All of her light fixtures, iron fencing and even her LCD T.V's need to be replaced every three or four years. The salt is so powerful from the Ocean that her house 100 yards away is dramatically effected. The T.V's are safe in the house you would think, but the electronics inside still get destroyed. Not so with your salt pool. The salinity level will not reach such a level to damage your deck or your equipment. So relax and stop hosing off your deck after the kids go swimming. Even if they cry on your pool deck don't panic ;).

Myth: Salt Water Systems are always breaking down and are hard to use
They are amazingly reliable except for a few brands that you should avoid. The only issue is if the cell gets calcium build-up it will stop producing, but simply cleaning the cell will get it working again. The SWG control panels have gotten more user friendly over the years and most will tell you the salt level along with LED lights to let you know it is operating correctly.

Truth: The pH in a Salt Water pool is always rising and high
Yes, this is a drawback with the SWG production. the pH does rise dramatically in your pool. There are ways to counter this. You can add Borates to your pool to achieve a level of 50 ppm and this will prevent rapid pH climb as the SWG is working. You can also invest a few hundred dollars in a pH (Acid Pump) and let that keep your water in balance. Not a major drawback but something you need to know.

Truth: Salt Pools are make your pool easy to maintain and the water is softer
This is one of the best benefits of a Salt Water Pool - your pool will be easy to maintain as the SWG adds chlorine to the pool for you. No more handling of harsh chemicals or your chlorine zeroing out allowing your pool to turn on you. Plus the water is much softer and you won't have any harsh chemical smells to deal with.

Bottom line is that there are a lot of benefit of converting your pool to a SWG with very few drawbacks. Here is a video covering much of what I talk about in this article:

Pleatco Advanced Cartridge for Your Pool & Spa - Review

Great misconceptions of the 21st century:

A penny dropped from the Empire State building can’t kill someone, but it would hurt.
Tapping a can of soda won’t stop it from exploding when you open it.
Chewing gum doesn’t take seven years to digest if you swallow it.
Blood is not blue when it’s in your veins.
All filter Cartridges are basically the same.
This last one is believed to be true by many homeowners and pool service professionals. But Pleatco has set out to prove everyone wrong. Not only that, but Pleatco has set the new standard that will be tough to match: Pleatco Advanced.

I know this is starting to sound like a sales pitch, but I assure you that I don't sell any pool products directly and I do not work for Pleatco. I've built a solid internet reputation through YouTube and Amazon.com with honest, unbiased product reviews. With that out of the way I was BLOWN AWAY by the test results of the Pleatco Advanced.

If you want to see the test for yourself here is the video:

THE TEST:
For the test I used my own pool filter - Pentair Clean & Clear Plus 320 sq ft.
I dumped in a 10 lbs. Bag of D.E. - Diamotecous Earth (D.E. filter element).
A 4 quart bag of potting soil, and 1 lbs. of dirt.
I will also add that my wife was not home so I could play Mad Scientist minus the evil chuckling :-)
I did get busted later when she watch the video...
Just a note about D.E. - it will damage and clog a cartridge filter media. I've seen this firsthand out in the field when a customer adds it to their cartridge filter after getting bad advice from a pool store clerk who forgets to ask what type of filter they have.

So I wanted to see if it would destroy the Pleatco Advance cartridges - Muwahahahahahahahahahaaha!(Sorry Couldn't resist).

So I poured in enough D.E. for three 36 sq ft D.E. filters (comparable filter size to my 320 filter).  But wait, I wanted some large particle debris so I added a bag of soil (I removed my pump basket so it would go directly into the filter). Last, I figured some dirt would complete the task - "Must......Destroy........ Pleatco.......Advanced!"

THE RESULTS:
The first thing I noticed after 24 hours was that the pool was still crystal clear and the pressure gauge on the filter didn't budge- WHAT!

This is how they looked
Just a note - I installed a brand new gauge right before the test - so I know the reading was right on. The PSI was at 20 before I started and still at 20 the next day. AMAZING!

Slightly Dirty...
So I went ahead and removed the lid. I figured the cartridges would be pretty messed up. I was expected broken bands and that the filter pleats bulging. Here is the actual photo when I took the lid off. CRAZY!

Now I wondered if they would actually come clean. I know soil really stains the cartridge media and I thought the D.E. compacted on their would also cause some permanent damage. So I cleaned them off.  And the results were AMAZING, AGAIN!

After cleaning them off
Here is a photo of the four cartridges after cleaning them. I put them back in my filter and started the pool up. The pressure gauge read 20 PSI. So I am truly impressed by the Pleatco Advanced Cartridges. They survived a serious Mad Scientist like test and emerged intact looking like new. So not all filter cartridges are the same as you can see from the Pleatco Advanced Cartridges.

Top Five Automatic Pool Cleaners of 2014 and Debris Comparison

One of the questions I get asked all the time is what cleaner picks up debris the best. Leaves, dirt and other stuff that will fall into your pool can make your pool look uninviting. An automatic cleaner is a great way to keep your pool looking great each week. Here are the top five of 2014 in order of how much debris they can collect.

Polaris 360 shown
Number One: Polaris 280, 360, 380, 480 & 3900:

The Polaris by Zodiac is still the best when it comes to debris. It can pick up stuff on the pool bottom that other cleaners just can't. The debris bag is also a super fine mesh and will trap dirt also. Most of the Polaris models require a separate booster pump except for the Polaris 360 pictured here. That one runs off of your existing return jets - but they must be 1.5" threaded and you need at least a 1 hp pump for it to be effective.

If you are interested in getting a Polaris cleaner
I have several videos on my YouTube Channel detailing the 280 and 360 models which I think are the two best Polaris models. Again, the 360 runs off of your return jets without a booster pump.

The opening on the bottom of the Polaris is large enough to suck up a full size rat. How do I know this? Well, I've pulled enough dead rats out of the Polaris debris bag to verify this for you. It will also pick up large leaves, rocks and just about anything that falls into your pool.

Polaris 360 Video: http://youtu.be/__RPLvisssM
Polaris 280 Video: http://youtu.be/RRz-pX7Ew9g

Number Two: The Solar Breeze

This is one of my new favorite cleaners. It can be used as a stand alone cleaner and will leave the surface of your pool spotless each week. Especially in the Summer when it is running all day and into the night. It is a robotic solar powered cleaner so there are no hoses or cords. It does such a great job on the surface that you will only need to vacuum the pool every two weeks or longer. It can also be used in conjunction with a suction cleaner. In that case you will just need some extra hose weights to sink the suction cleaner hose below the water line to give the Solar Breeze access to the entire pool.

That is how I have my pool at home set up, Solar breeze on top and a suction side cleaner for the bottom. Here is one in a pool with bamboo trees all along the far side. The Solar Breeze collects so much debris each week that the debris tray is actually jammed in the cleaner. This pool also has a cleaner going on the bottom so the pool stays clean all week long. A very innovative cleaner that really works and one that I would recommend if your pool has a lot of surface debris. The debris tray holds about two skimmer baskets worth of debris. A good buy.

Solar Breeze Video: http://youtu.be/jzWfClbOnIc

 Number Three: "ThePoolCleaner by Poolvergnuegen

This was a close call and I would almost call it a tie with Number Four which is the New Kreepy Krauly by Pentair. This little cleaner is great in a pool with lots of debris like Oak nuts and leaves. It will have trouble with Maple tree bark and Eucalyptus Tree bark, but most cleaners will also get jammed up by that type of tree debris. Other than those two trees it will pick up just about any debris that will fit in it's mouth. It has a unique turbine that allows it to pick up debris that would jam other cleaners. It is amazing how much debris this thing can handle. It sometimes picks up so much debris that the hose itself gets clogged up.

Here it is in a pool surrounded by Oak trees. Just about every week the pool is pretty much spotless - at least on the bottom. occasionally it will suck up so many oak nuts that it gets jammed up. It just doesn't know when to stop ;). I also should mention that this cleaner does not require a lot of part changes over the years. The only thing you need to change every year or two are the rubber tires. Other than that the parts in this thing last a long time. I have at least 15 accounts with various versions of this cleaner installed and they do a great job in all those pools without exception.

To see the Poolvergnuegen Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsvsTjbpoT-f4qYUPi5C0So5_n75a9GDw

Number Four: The New Kreepy Krauly by Pentair

I have three of these now on my route as they are fairly new to the market. I have a Blog article detailing this cleaner for you so I will briefly cover some of the finer points. This cleaner is a beast with debris. It will pick up so much debris that it will burst your leaf canister insert if you are not careful. You can see how compacted the debris is in the photo. It just keeps going until there is nothing left to suck up.

This pool has a lot of regular size trees and some other trees with particle like tree leaves. The Kreepy has no problem with either and also works great in a pools with oak trees and larger leaf debris.
The price right now for the New Kreepy Krauly is what I would consider low. For what you are getting it is a real bargain. The updated design allows the Kreepy to clean the entire pool without getting hung up in certain areas like the older model (now the Kreepy Krauly Classic) used to.  To see the full article:
http://poolmandave.blogspot.com/2013/12/review-of-new-kreepy-krauly-by-pentair.html

Here is a video on this cleaner: http://youtu.be/NOvs5v668Dk

Number Five: Zodiac G2 or G3

This is still one of my favorite cleaners on the market, the G2 in particular. I know there is a bad rap on the fact that the diaphragm tends to wear out and it is an expensive part. But now there are several generic replacements available - some under $10.00 in price. Surprisingly these generic diaphragms work very well.  With that said this cleaner when given the right amount of suction can keep your pool spotless each week. what I like about the Zodiac cleaners is that they are fast. They can move around an entire pool several times within one hour.
This G2 cleaner is in a pool with a large Avocado tree right over it. Thankfully it has an automatic cover, but for the days it is open the pool is a mess. The G2 keeps it spotless nevertheless and as you can see the large Avocado leave\s, stems and even small avocados are no match for the G2. It also will pick up so much debris that the canister insert can crack. Just a great cleaner and still one of my favorites.

I hope you found this helpful as you choose an automatic cleaner for your pool. If you have a specific question regarding debris and what cleaner I recommend you can contact me here or on my Website:
