Benefits of Becoming a Pool Service Professional

You need to be a hard worker. This job is not for everyone. There is weather to deal with, wind, rain, heat, humidity, and snow. You are doing physical labor all day long. So, if you don't like hard work or working in 100-degree weather, this job might not be for you.

A book I read years ago helped me and it might help you also is called The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How to Be One by Peter B. Kyne. It was first published in 1921. This book will give you a good lesson on what it takes to be successful.

You can learn the trade by watching my YouTube videos and by taking courses in your local area if they are offered. A fantastic way to make sure you are qualified and ready is to get CPO certified or Residential Certified through Bob Lowry’s course.

People skills are essential because you are running a service business and are providing specific “work” in return for payment. You are not selling a product; the product is you and the service you provide. So, you will make mistakes and customers will get mad and you will need to develop good people skills.

Good solid business skills are essential. You are in business to make money and you are not just out there “spinning your wheels.” So, you need to learn how to draw up a business plan which includes charging enough per pool so that you turn a profit. Service prices vary from region to region so it is up to you to set the best price for your area.

Getting your finances in order is a fantastic way to get your business finances in order. A great resource that I used successfully was the Dave Ramsey plan to become Debt Free myself. Learning how to run your finances is critical and if you can't manage your finances you certainly won't be able to manage your business finances.

Be an honest person. Being a person of Integrity takes a lot of effort. I was never taught as a youngster the value of being honest, so I had to learn it as an adult. If you lie to your customers and they find out, your reputation will be damaged. And in the service business, your reputation is everything.

So how do you get started in the business? You can get a truck, open an account at Leslie’s Pool Supplies and receive wholesale pricing. Or open an account at PoolCorp, the parent company of SCP and Superior Pool Products, and get your equipment and chemicals at wholesale pricing.

Then you can solicit accounts to service. This is a hard way to get started but is doable if you start part-time and build up a route while working at another job. Over time you can build up a good business.

You can also work for a pool company for a year or two and learn the trade. This is also a good method and you can learn a lot that will help you later when you are on your own.

You can also purchase a full or partial pool route from a Pool Service Broker. You purchase pools in your area. If you have the money to invest this is a fantastic way to do it. Look at it like purchasing a business. If you started building a pool route from scratch and already know the trade, this is a wonderful way to make your route bigger and bring in more income. In many cases buying pools makes sense.

You must get a good Liability Insurance Policy. This will protect you from lawsuits if you do make a mistake that damages the customer's property or person. For instance, you add water to the customer's pool and forget to turn it off. It floods their house and causes $30,000 in damage. They sue you for $30,000 and you are out of business. Instead, get a policy for less than $80 a month that will transfer the risk from you to the insurance company. It is just good business sense and you will sleep better at night.

Best Way to Get Your Swimming Pool's Salt Level

Testing a pool or spa's salinity (salt) level is a must if you service saltwater pools. If you are a homeowner there is nothing better than owning a good digital salinity meter to get an accurate salt reading. Yes, some systems do display the pool’s salt level but they can be inaccurate.
Inaccurate system readings can be caused by a dirty salt cell. A salt cell is near the end of its lifespan. Water temperature. Communication error between the cell and the control unit or automated system. Or just inaccurate readings by the built-in salinity sensor.

That is why an independent digital tester is important. LaMotte is the leader in the industry of digital water testers. From their Spintouch to their ColorQ Pro photometers they have a solid track record in the industry. Their Tracer PockeTester series recently received a makeover with a new red hard case. Same great testers with a fresh new look.

Order on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3LIlTAw

The 1749-KIT-01 includes the Salt, TDS, and Temp. TRACER PockeTester™ and 120 mL calibration standard all in a rugged carrying case. The Salt, TDS, and Temperature TRACER PockeTester memory feature saves 25 results.

Test Factors
Conductivity
Range: 0 to 199.9 µS, 200;
Accuracy: ±1%
Salinity
Range: 0 to 9,999 ppm (mg/L)
Accuracy: 0.1 ppm (mg/L) ±2%
TDS
Range: 0 to 9,999 ppm (mg/L)
Accuracy: 0.1 ppm (mg/L) ±2%
Temperature
Range:32° to 149°F (0 to 65°C)
Accuracy: 0.1°F/°C ±1.8°F/°C

Testing for Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is something that the pool and spa professional rarely does. But TDS is vital in balancing a swimming pool. High TDS can cause many issues including using up the sanitizer in the pool more rapidly. It is also a factor in the LSI Index so knowing the TDS of the pool is important.

TDS is the measure of the sum of all the substances dissolved in your pool water. Common dissolved solids are magnesium, potassium, sulfates, carbonates, irons, other metals, minerals, carbonates/bicarbonates, anionic and cationic substances, and salts.

Everything you add to the water increases its TDS, including chlorine, chemicals used to adjust pH such as pH increaser or reducer, any other pool product like algaecide, clarifiers, etc. Even swimming in your pool adds to your TDS level, sweat, hairspray, deodorant, perfume and anything coming off of your body increases the TDS level.

Ideally, your TDS level should be under 2000 ppm which is the number you get after subtracting the TDS of your tap water. When it gets higher than this it can again decrease the effectiveness of chlorine and also cause skin and eye irritation to bathers.  It can also lead to metal corrosion of your pool equipment. Cloudy water and scaly deposits occur more easily in pools with very high TDS. You may notice a brown stain on everything in the pool including the automatic cleaner.

Wind Event and Your Pool Route

Educating the clients on your pool service route before a major wind event is critical. You must lower their expectations or assumptions that their pool will be cleaned up in one visit. Many clients will assume that since they pay you to maintain and clean their pool you will spend 2 hours at their account to get things cleaned up. That is just an impossible expectation and with a service, agreement spelling out what they should expect in a major wind event you are off the hook.

A strategy that I implement is letting the customer know that if they can skim the surface and empty the skimmer basket I will vacuum up the pool bottom, thus speeding up the cleanup. Having a pole and leaf rake at every one of your service accounts is essential. That way the client can pitch in during a major wind event. About 80% of my current clients will skim the pool surface the day after a wind storm. This makes it easy for me to get the pool back in shape with my vacuum system.

It is a good idea again to have a Service Contract so that your customers are aware that the Santa Ana winds are an “act of God” and out of your control. Also, explain the clean-up process in the contract so that they are aware you can't spend hours each week cleaning up the pool. The Podcast goes over this and more in greater detail so listen to it for more detailed information. If you would like a copy of my one-page service contract email me at david@swimmingpoollearning.com and I will get one over to you.

Speaking of which if you don’t have a vacuum system and you service a wind-prone area, get one. There should be no reason except economic hardship preventing you from purchasing a Riptide or Bottom Feeder. A vacuum system is a real game-changer and instead of dreading the after-effects of a wind storm, you will just be mildly irritated. If you haven’t used a vacuum system you are missing out.

For the pool service professional, you will need to set a timer for each pool for 25-30 minutes. If you spend less time at another account you can use the time for your current stop. But realistically with the short amount of sunlight in the Winter, you will not be able to complete your route each day if you spend 50 minutes to an hour at each pool. Besides that it is exhausting and you could hurt yourself by trying to do too much each day. Explain to your customers that your priority the first stop after a wind event is to skim the surface and get the pool running.

The dirt and ash present another problem and I suggest using some type of Portable Filtration System or Portable Pump. Here in So Cal most of the pool filters are either Cartridge filters or D.E. Filters with only a Push/Pull Backwash Valve. Very few accounts have a Multi-Port Valve with a “Waste” mode where you can vacuum the pool and bypass the filter. This means that all of the dirt and ash will have to be vacuumed up and go directly into the pool filter. Then you will have to take the filter apart and clean it which takes time. Better to vacuum the pool out with a Portable Pump that is easy to build or invest in a Portable Filtration System like the PORTAVAC by Advantage Manufacturing.

pH TRACER PockeTester™ Kit with Total Chlorine #1741-KIT-01 Overview

pH TRACER PockeTester™ Kit with Total Chlorine Order Code 1741-KIT-01 is one of LaMottes newest Combo kit. There are a number of Tracer PockeTester Kits available for purchase and you can find them all listed here:

It measures the Total Chlorine test measures from 0 to 9.99 ppm with an accuracy of 10% and resolution of 0.01 ppm. I found it to be accurate with 2-3% in my testing so this is a very accurate digital tester when used correctly. You will need to do 3 steps to get a correct reading.

Use one of the included Chlorine Test Tablets (100 pack) #7044A-J and crush it up well.
Then shake the sample cup for 30 seconds.
Last insert the probe and twist it around for 10 seconds.

All of this will give you the best results. Is it a bit time-consuming? Yes and no. It should take about 1 minute to do the test so it is not terrible. It’s actually a great way to get the Total Chlorine reading using a device that is very accurate.

pH Range
pH 0.00 to 14.00 pH
Accuracy
0.01 pH ±0.01 pH

The pH probe is very accurate especially if you take the time to Calibrate it when needed. It is so easy to calibrate. You would just use 2 of the included pH tablets in separate samples to calibrate the pH probe. Once calibrated expect spot-on pH readings. The only caution is that you will need to store the probe in pH 4 solution when you are done using it at each account. Easy because they supply you with pH 4.0 tablets.

Temperature 32° to 149°F (0 to 65°C) 0.1°F/°C
±1.8°F/°C

All the items are packaged in a new rugged compact carrying case. This red Hardcase really takes the Tracer line to the next level. I really like it over the old blue soft case that was shaped oddly for pool service.

LaMotte doesn’t really sell their kits online and you can find them for order or in stock at your local wholesale supplier. Contact LaMotte for a wholesaler near you that sells the Kit: 800) 344-3100 (the USA and Canada Only)

Ways of Dealing with Old Pool Water When You Can't Drain Your Swimming Pool

I sat down with Terry Arko at HASA to talk about how the drought affects a swimming pool, mainly the rise in TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), and what you can do as a pool pro and a pool owner about this issue.

Terry Arko has over 40 years of experience in the pool, spa, and hot tub industry, working in service, repair, retail sales, chemical manufacturing, and product development. He is a CPO instructor through the National Swimming Pool Foundation. He also serves as an instructor for the Pool Chemistry Training Institute to certify residential pool techs. Terry is an active member of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals Recreational Water Quality Committee.

I think it is best to start with a definition of TDS.

TDS: Total Dissolved Solids are basically everything in the water besides the water itself. The “junk” includes chlorides, metals, ions like bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity, nitrogen compounds, and organics that are left in the water after it evaporates even after fresh fill water is added.

TDS can become an issue if the levels are high in your pool. Basically, if the water is acting strange, algae blooming with high chlorine levels, murky water, etc., it could be high TDS.  You can take a sample to your local pool store and have it tested.

The best way to lower the TDS is a drought environment with a partial drain of the pool whenever you get the opportunity. Dilution is the key here. So if you can dilute an inch to 3-4 inches each month that would be ideal.

For a pool service company, a TDS meter is a good investment. I like the Lamotte PockeTester & the HACH Testers as they also do the Salinity level as well as TDS. To get the TDS reading first test a sample of the pool’s fill water. Then test the pool water. Subtract the pool TDS from the fill water TDS to get the actual TDS number.

Example:
Tap Water (fill water) 500 TDS
Pool water 1700 TDS

1700-500 = 1200 which is the actual TDS.

TDS in a Salt Water Pool
TDS in your Salt Water pool is a little more complex. You will always get a really high number because of the salt level in the pool.  I talked at length with Hach to see if there was some way to calculate the TDS with all the salt in the pool. I also talked to the salt system manufacturers but everyone agreed that the best method would be to get a TDS reading and subtract the Salinity (Salt level) from that number to get a ballpark. The only way to get a true reading in a sense is when the pool is newly filled with water and salt is added. If you get the TDS at that point you will have a good baseline so you will know if the TDS gets 2500 ppm over that number it is time to change the water in the salt pool. The maximum TDS in a salt pool is debatable but 5000 ppm is a good number to stay under.

Riptide Beast Mode!

The Riptide SL cart is designed to take the Riptide Pool Vacuum System and Battery back to your service stop. There is a bin in front and one in the back where you can store chemicals and such. I wouldn’t say it is lacking space for the average pool pro. But if you are like me and you like to take everything possible back in one trip to each stop, it can get overloaded.

Riptide has the solution to this with their New!  Handlebar Organizer and their Quart Bottle/Tab Holder.

HANDLEBAR ORGANIZER $ 80.00
https://www.riptidevac.com/collections/accessories/products/handlebar-organizer

The Handlebar Organizer can hold a leaf rake, brush, Taylor test kit, test strips, tools, and whatever else you wish to add to it. This will leave the bins open for chemicals and other pool tools. Basically, the organizer has really opened up the possibilities with the Riptide SL cart and you can bring some much need supplies back with you now to every stop.

QUART BOTTLE/TAB HOLDER $30.00 each
https://www.riptidevac.com/collections/accessories/products/quart-bottle-tab-holder

You can add as many as 4 of the Quart Bottle Holders to the Riptide which is a great way to bring back the industry-standard Quart Bottles and Spray Bottles to your stops. You can also transport up to 5 Tri-Chlor Tablets back with you in one of the holders.

More about the Riptide SL:
The Riptide Pool Vacuum System made its debut in late 2016. Since then, it has gone through several transformations. The Riptide Circa 2021 is the finest version yet and it is packed with so many updated features it should have been called the Riptide SL 2.0. Listen as David Sargent
President goes over some of the features for you in person.

Here are some of the great updated features:
High Torque Motor (uses rare earth magnets) High Torque Motor- Our new High Torque motor utilizes rare earth magnets making it the most powerful vacuum on the market

The cord -the new protective external layer –just feels so solid and durable

Cord Clip – secures the cord to the cart so no more worries of it falling off and dragging on the ground

Stainless steel end plates on the vacuum head

The cart is now e-coated before powder coating & the Transport Rack Is e-coated now too - Electrostatic Coating- All of our powder-coated parts are now electrostatic coated (ecoating) and then powder coated over. This makes the finish of our components much more durable.

Extremely high-quality integrated steering knuckle -Integrated Stainless Steel Steering Knuckle. This allows you to hook any pole directly up to the Riptide vacuum without the need for any adaptors while being effortless to maneuver in the water.

The SL model Riptides now include a Diagnostic/Tool Kit with a battery load tester, the load tester is essential for quickly determining battery condition.

The bags now have a different ring color to differentiate different microns.

The bags (100 Micron and below) are double layers now this feature is making the bags last much longer.

25 Micron Bag available (specialty dust bag) this bag can eliminate the need to system vac a pool with a dust problem.

The updated Riptide SL is the most durable vacuum system on the market today. The shell is backed by a 10-year warranty, the added steel plates to the vacuum head sides, the stainless steel knuckle, and the new beefed-up cord make it designed to last! The cart and transport rack has been given a stronger paint job thanks to the new Electrostatic coating!

Is pool Service Recession Proof?

I wouldn’t be dismissive of a Recession as it affects every area of most people's lives. I wouldn’t panic though. And that is my stance on any economic downturn. I have been through this before with the worst downturn coming in 2008-2010, some even calling that period a Depression.

For the pool industry, a Recession can affect some sectors worse than others. For instance, a pool builder is likely to lose leads and can see that business contract dramatically. If money is not available to pull out of your home or cash is scarce, investments are losing value, and most potential clients will simply defer the pool building project until another year or longer.

Pool stores will of course suffer with sales of the more expensive products and most high-end consumers will be pulling back as a natural reaction to a down market. Anything unnecessary will be put on hold until a future date as money may be tight for a lot of consumers.

As far as the pool service sector you can anticipate a drop of maybe 10% or less in most cases, at least that is how it was back in 2008 and I don’t see this Recession as nearly as severe as that one. People generally need pool service and will pay to have service done on their pool unless things get so tight that they need to do it themselves. Other cuts usually happen first like the house cleaner and gardener before they even consider letting the pool service go. We are also in an expanding service market with so many new pools builds coming online and so many expensive pools existing in backyards already.
The economic factors are also different this time around. Pool service back in 2008 was around $85 per month in my area and the average car payment was around $450 with gas being a little over $2.00 a gallon. Now the average in my area is $150 per month for weekly service, the average car payment is now $700 and gas is $4.50 a gallon. The pool service is a relatively smaller expense than it was in 2008 when you factor in inflation. Besides that to go to the pool store and purchase chemicals to do it yourself, you will be in for a shock as almost every pool chemical has gone up in price by 80-130%. It will be difficult to service your pool by yourself now and save substantially on the cost.

Weekly pool service is also something that many homeowners find necessary as the builders have put in more complex automation and the features of a pool have also become more complex since 2008 like UV, Ozone, Salt Systems, and the like. The investment in a backyard pool is also something that calls for professional service. Back in 2008, a pool might have cost you $40,000. For that same pool, you are now paying over $100,000 so to protect your investment you would want professional pool service.
Weekly pool service is more or less recession insulated and we will feel some of the effects of the slowdown but not the full effect that will be felt by other sectors in the economy.

AquaStar Pipeline Filter with AquaStar COO Todd Pieri

The AquaStar Pipeline Filters are the newest pool filters to hit the market. They are in fact the first redesigned filter in several years from any manufacturer. I interviewed Todd Pieri the COO of AquaStar and he goes over these filters in detail for you.

The build quality is great and these filters are made here in the USA. The plastic reminds me a lot of the Sta-Rite System 3 filters which in my opinion are the most durable filters on the market today. The AquaStar Pipeline filters have that same build quality to them. The super compact size will be a game-changer for builders, at least in Southern California where they like to put in the tightest equipment pads.

The actual dimensions of the PLF27000 are 19 ½” wide by 36 ½” tall. The PLF35000 is 19 ½” wide and 46 ½” tall making them amazingly compact.

Here is more about the filters from AquaStar:

Model # PLF27000
200 sq ft cartridge
Commercial:
27,000 gallons
6-Hour Turnover Capacity
Residential:
108,000 gallons
12-Hour Turnover Capacity

Model # PLF35000
250 sq ft cartridge
Commercial:
35,000 gallons
6-Hour Turnover Capacity
Residential:
144,000 gallons
12-Hour Turnover Capacity

Pay close attention to these specs to the turnover rate. A turnover on a Pentair 520 sq ft cartridge filter is 108,000 in 12 hours. Did you notice that the PLF27000 a 200 sq ft cartridge filter has the same turnover? That is pretty incredible. This is due to the deeper pleats on the cartridge as well as the core of the filter which has 64% larger openings than other cartridge filters.

Essentially if you purchase either of these Pipeline filters they will have more flow than a filter twice their size! In NSF Certification and testing, these filters were rated as one-pass filters. This means that in the turbidity test, one pass of water through was equal to a D.E. Filter. Another impressive point.

The Pipeline filters also feature a Locking Safety Release Collar that remains fully locked while depressurizing. This will prevent the tank from blowing off in the case where someone tries to clean the filter and take the lid off while the filter is under pressure. A great safety feature that every filter should have.

I mentioned the NSF certification so these filters are of course designed and approved for Commercial pools. Note that all of the specs on flow and turbidity testing were reported and confirmed by NSF testing which is an independent testing entity and these numbers came from them and not from any testing done by AquaStar. An important note which makes these specs even more impressive.
