What is in Clorox Pool & Spa Xtra Blue 3" Tablets?

It is always good to know what is in the chemical you are adding to your pool or spa. The ingredients are usually displayed on the side of and if you are curious about the exact makeup and possible hazards you can always Google the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). The MSDS will let you know the safety issues presented by the chemical and list the ingredients.

Once in a while, you will see an ingredient marked as a “Trade Secret” or as a “Proprietary blend" and then things can become a head-scratcher. Take Clorox Xtra Blue 3” Tablets for example. Here is the chemical make up according to the MSDS:

Hazardous components Component / CAS-No. Weight percent
Trichloro-s-triazinetrione 87-90-1: 94.05 %
Trade secret 002: 3 - 8 %
Boron salt < 2 %

From the name Clorox Blue you kinda get the idea that the little blue specs in the tablets are the 3-8% “Trade Secret” ingredient. If you do a little research you will find that the little blue specs are some form of copper that Clorox puts into the tablets. I think the reason it is a “Trade Secret” is only that it is in a form that they cannot disclose for fear of being copied and of course that would cost them money if someone can make the same exact 3” tablet with blue specs of copper in them.

For a “Trade Secret” the rules are as follows:
Ingredients can be claimed as trade secret based on the definition in the Uniform Trade
Secrets Act (UTSA). The UTSA defines a trade secret as “information, including a
the formula, pattern, compilation, program device, method, technique, or process, that: (i)
derives independent economic value, actual or potential, from not being generally
known to, and not being readily ascertainable by proper means by, other persons who
can obtain economic value from its disclosure or use, and (ii) is the subject of efforts
that are reasonable under the circumstances to maintain its secrecy.”

But from some reports of copper staining in their pool and other adverse side effects of Clorox Xtra Blue Tablets we can safely guess the 3=8% is some form of copper. The Xtra Blue shock actually list copper as an ingredient so it would be no surprise then that the Xtra Blue tablets contain copper in a “Trade Secret” form.

The danger here of course is that you are using a product that has copper in it but the copper ingredient is not listed on the product. So if you are using a copper algaecide, a PoolRx or another mineral system or Solar Pool Ionizer you could potentially be overloading your pool with copper. This can cause staining of course and other issues like blonde hair turning green and the purple dusting formed by high CYA levels in a pool and high levels of copper.

It is up to you as the pool pro or homeowner to know what you are putting into your pool. You should also note that 50-60% of each tablet is Cyanuric Acid. This means that if you use the entire 35 lbs. bucket you are adding about 18 to 20 lbs. of Cyanuric Acid to the pool. And this goes with any brand of 3” Tri-Chlor tablets, not just Clorox. Adding that much Cyanuric Acid to a pool will bring it well above the 30-50 ppm recommend.
Bottom line, if you are adding something to your pool or spa you should know what is in it. You wouldn’t eat or drink something without reading the label or at least I don’t. But in any event it is easy to find out about a product's ingredients with a little research and the MSDS forms available online and at your suppliers.

Picking the Right Artificial Turf

Picking the right turf and turf company can be tough. It took us over one year of researching and getting bids before we settled on the right company. I suggest getting at least 3 bids so you know that you are being quoted correctly. We decided to go with a local family-owned company, All Season Turf. Since having our turf installed 6 of our neighbors have also had All Season Turf install Turf at their houses.

Watch the video to learn more:

This is a smaller family-owned and operated company, but you can see from the video that they definitely know what they are doing. They also install Tiger Turf which is made here in the USA and comes with a 15-year warranty (100% lead-free).

I think if you get three bids you will have some idea of the cost involved and of the different turfs available. There are so many to choose from and it is also important to visit job sites of completed lawns to see the actual turf. To me, this is a pretty critical part since a small 2-foot sample can't do the entire project justice.

Here is more of why you should think about installing Artificial Turf (courtesy of All Season Turf):

Artificial grass offers many advantages over a traditional lawn
Artificial grass offers an excellent landscaping option for just about any residential or commercial property, because:

It Always Looks Beautiful: Artificial grass stays lush and green under all weather conditions. UV protection built right into the blades means it never fades.

It’s Low-Maintenance: There’s no need to mow, water, weed, or feed your lawn when you have artificial grass. All you have to do is rinse it and brush high-traffic areas periodically.

It’s Durable: Artificial grass is designed with reinforced tufts and strong backing to withstand heavy foot traffic and all kinds of other activities.

It’s Fast-Drying: When properly installed, artificial turf can drain off rainwater quickly to prevent puddles and soggy spots and let you spend more time enjoying your lawn.

It’s Eco-Friendly: You can save thousands of gallons of water per year by switching to artificial grass. Plus, you won’t need any potentially harmful weed killers, pesticides, or fertilizers.

It’s Pet-Friendly: Pets can run and play on artificial grass without tearing it up or wearing bare spots around the edges of the lawn. Plus, it’s easy to clean up after they do their business.

It’s Kid-Friendly: Artificial grass and infill products are non-toxic and safe for kids to play on. Plus, artificial turf is cleaner and softer than lawns grown in hard-packed dirt.

It Lasts: When you choose a quality product, have it installed professionally, and take care of it, artificial grass can last for 15 years or more.

Save Time and Money with Artificial Grass
No Mowing: Artificial grass is always the perfect length. You never have to mow or weed-eat your lawn to keep it looking its best. This will save you hours of labor as well as the cost of gas and maintenance for your mower and weedeater.

No Watering: No matter how hot and dry the weather is, artificial grass will stay lush and green. You never need to water it, so you can save thousands of gallons of water each year.

No Weeding: Most kinds of artificial turf—with the exception of pet turf—can be installed over a weed barrier that will prevent weeds from springing up on your lawn. You won’t have to spend hours hunched over plucking weeds ever again.

No Chemicals: Real grass lawns typically need to be fertilized at least once per year. You may also need to apply pesticides or weed killers. But with artificial grass, these products are unnecessary.

Maintaining Your Artificial Grass is Easy
Artificial grass is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. You will need to complete a few quick and easy maintenance tasks to keep it looking its best:

Rinse It: Airborne dust and dirt can settle on your artificial grass and make it look dingy. Fortunately, cleaning it off is as simple as rinsing with water. You can even set up a sprinkler to do this for you.

Brush It: Heavy foot traffic can cause artificial grass to look flat and matted. To prevent or correct this, simply brush it against the direction of the blades with a plastic-bristled brush. This will get the blades standing up perkily again. – “All Season Turf”

Swimming Pool Variable speed Pump Options

After July 19th, 2021 you will be hard-pressed to find a single-speed 1hp pump or motor. The Department of Energy has mandated new energy rules and almost all of the single-speed pumps will no longer be sold. That leaves only Variable Speed Pumps as an option going forward after July 19th.  Below are some of the pumps I recommend.

Listen to the video below for some sales tips on VS pumps:

The first option would be to replace the motor with a Century V-Green stands alone VS motor. They are compatible with most pumps and come with a round or square flange. It is the most affordable option and if the existing pump is less than 5 years old I would suggest going that route. But if you need to replace the entire pump here are some brands to look at.

Pentair was the first with their IntelliFlo VS pump and it is still the benchmark pump because there are just so many of them installed in backyards. When they first came out much thought they would never catch on and the first generation of the IntelliFlo did have a few issues. In the beginning, I didn’t like them much myself and thought it was a fad that would fade away. Now many states like California and Arizona require you to install one once your standard single speed pump needs to be replaced.

So, Pentair being the first makes it the best, right? Not exactly, but you can’t go wrong with a 3 HP IntelliFlo VS pump. It features a great price point and is super reliable. The menu can be challenging to understand but it has a long track record and is tough to beat. The flow rate of the IntelliFlo VS is also excellent and if you choose to go with Pentair you are making a very solid choice.

I will say that one factor to consider when you have an automated system already installed is to go with the VS pump that matches the brand of your automated system. The only exception is the Jandy Aqualink which is compatible with the Pentair IntelliFlo VS. But in most cases, if you have Hayward Automation, go with a Hayward VS pump. If you have a Jandy Aqualink go with a Jandy VS pump. And if you have a Pentair Automated system go with the IntelliFlo VS pump.

Let me touch on the Jandy VS Pumps. These are very good pumps and feature Century motors which have a great track record in the industry. The only thing you need to note is that the Jandy VS pumps need a separate controller to work. If the pump is a stand-alone without an automated system you would need a JEP-R Controller or the iQPump01 to actually program and control the pump. These can be mounted separately from the pump on the wall for instance and the iQPump01 works over the internet so you can control the pump from anywhere. The flow rate is comparable to the Pentair VS pump and they also feature a 3 HP version. The Jandy VS pump is about as good as the Pentair IntelliFlo, it is like comparing BMW with Mercedes

Hayward VS Pump line-up. With a Hayward VS pump like the TriStar 950 and Smart Pool control, you can control everything on your equipment pad that a stand-alone automated system can. You can turn on the heater, turn it to spa mode, turn on the lights, and much more from your Smart Phone using the Hayward OMNI Logic app. They also off a 3-year warranty on their new VS pumps with the TriStar 950 sporting a 4-year warranty.  So Hayward is back in the game with their VS pump lineup.

All of these pumps require a 230 Volt set up which can be a drawback if you are running your current pump off of 115 Volts. The solution for this is to install the Pentair SuperFlo VS pump which has been designed to work with 230 Volts as well as 115 Volts. It is a 1.5 HP VS pump so it has plenty of power for your older pool set up and it is also very reliable. Hayward has also made the TriStar 950 with Smart Pool Control a dual voltage VS pump. So you can also connect the TriStar 950 to a 115 Volt set up. The pump will throttle down from the 3 HP rating to a 1.5 HP rating and work fine with your 115 Volt equipment.

The lines are a little blurred when it comes to picking the best Vs pump for your pool. You would want to match the VS pump to your current automation and if you don’t have an automated system and want one, the Hayward VS pump with the Smart Pool control is a great option.  I wouldn’t say these three VS pump brands are equal but there is not much separating each VS pump from one another.  Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward all make a quality VS pump so you will have to do your research and decide which one is the best for your pool.

Hayward TriVac 500 Not Moving: How to Fix

The Hayward TriVac 500 is a really underrated pressure side cleaner and it is pretty trouble-free also. But if you find that it is moving very slowly in your there could be a few things wrong with it, including a bad Timer Valve. It is an easy part to replace and they sell a complete kit – the Hayward TriVac 500 Timer Valve Kit #TVX7500TV For $135.00.

Check System First:
Because of the nature of how a pressure side cleaner works, check to make sure both the system pump (main pool pump) and the booster pump (cleaner pump) are set to come on at the same time. The main pump if it is a VS pump should be running at a higher speed, around 2200 RPM or greater is acceptable. If the system pump and booster pump are not set to turn on at the same time the TriVac 500 will not move.

Check the Quick Disconnect:
Make sure the TriVac 500 has enough water going to it. Sometimes the pressure relief valve is open or cracked. Typically, it should be closed if you have a ¾ hp booster pump connected to the TriVac 500. Also, check the debris screen in the line to make sure it is free of debris. When you clean your filter or if your filter grids or cartridges have tears in them, debris can get into the booster pump line and clog up the screen. If the screen is clogged the cleaner will not move.

Check for a Jammed Wheel:
Sometimes debris will get stuck in such a way as to jam one of the TriVac 500 wheels. It doesn’t happen very often but a trig can get stuck in a wheel and keep the wheel from spinning. So make sure all the wheels spin freely.

Timer Valve:
When you open the TriVac 500 you will be surprised at how few parts are in this thing. Basically when you replace all the parts that come in the Timer Valve Kit #TVX7500TV you have essentially put new guts into the machine. I don’t recommend replacing one part here or there. The kit will pretty much cover all of the bases so there is no need for individual part replacements. Hayward made things easy by creating this kit.  If you have checked the above things and the TriVac 500 is still not moving chances are that replacing the parts in this kit will fix it.

While you are at you can also change the bearings in the wheels along with the rubber tires. This will basically give you a brand new unit. I found the TriVac 500 very easy to work on and I like that Hayward kept things simple with their pressure cleaner. You can easily do all the repairs yourself.

Lease a Sutro Smart Water Monitor for $199 down and $29 per month!

The Sutro is the most advanced floating smart pool and spa water monitor on the market today. Unlike the other devices currently on the market that use ORP sensors, the Sutro uses LaMotte reagents to test Free Chlorine, pH, Alkalinity and there is a sensor for the water temperature. It’s a lot like having a test kit floating in your pool that will give you these three reading 3 times a day.

Listen to more about the Sutor with the founder Ravi in this video

Basic Lease:
$199 Down
$29 per month Subscription (includes a reagent cartridge each month shipped to you)

Premium Lease:
$199 Down
$39 per Month (includes a reagent cartridge each month shipped to you)

Own:
$699 Once – One free year subscription then $19 per month after that

All plans include a free reagent cartridge on-demand

Affordability has been the biggest stumbling block with these devices so Sutro has come up with a novel way to buy or lease the devices. The monthly subscription includes the reagent cartridge and if you do the math and do water testing each day you would easily go through several reagent bottles each month. Of course not too many people do 9 tests per day nor test more than once a week but the cost of the subscription is basically for the reagent cartridge. I like the fact that I don’t have to go out and test my pool water, I can just sit on my couch and check the app and see where my pool stands on Free Chlorine, pH and Total Alkalinity.

The device is also backward compatible for test factors that will be added later like Cyanuric Acid (CYA). They are also working on an LSI Calculator for the app for a future release. Here is the cost breakdown for you.

Basic Lease:
$199 Down
$29 per month Subscription (includes a reagent cartridge each month shipped to you)

Includes:
Test pH, Free Chlorine, Total Alkalinity & Temperature 3x per day
Hub + Monitor + Rechargeable Batteries

Again, you are paying for the convenience of not having to go out and test your pool water beyond the basic test factors here and knowing each day that your pool is balanced. In the long run this could save you money as you won’t need to be buying shock as you will know when your pool’s chlorine level is getting low in real-time. Of course, you still will need to get a quarterly check for your CYA and Calcium Hardness but the basic test factors that are critical each week/day are done by the Sutro.

How It Works
The Sutro Smart System is the Simple, Safe, and Seamless way to ensure that your pool (or spa) is ready when you are. Our patented smart water monitoring technology takes the hassle out of pool or spa water maintenance.

Hayward Phoenix Troubleshooting

The Hayward Phoenix is a Leslie’s Retail only cleaner and is available at your local Leslie’s store. It is in the same Hayward family of cleaners as the Poolcleaner and Aquanaut and note that these parts are the same ones for all three cleaners. The Hayward Phoenix is a solid cleaner but it will wear out over time just like any other product.

The one part you will need to change more often than any other is the rubber tires. Depending on how long you run your pool and the pool surface type will determine the tire lifespan. Generally speaking, you should get at least 15 months to 18 months out of each set of tires. For best performance, once the wear mark is reached I suggest changing the tires. For the four-wheel version, I like taking the front tires when worn and just cutting the hump off. Then I put them on the back tires, thus saving $50.00. I then put a new set of tires on the front.

The best thing about this cleaner is that Hayward sells what they call the Lower Body Conversion Kit – which is basically the entire bottom with the gears and driveshaft, plus 2 new wheels. For $120 or so you can have technically a brand new cleaner in 10 minutes.

To learn more about the lower body conversion kit you can watch this video:
https://youtu.be/4hg1qP3dHNI

To order parts for the Phoenix you can stop by your local Leslie’s or shop online here:

Another issue that you may run into is that large debris will jam the cleaner. A good way to solve this problem is to remove one or two vanes from the V-Flex turbine. It will still function fine and with the vanes removed larger debris will pass thru. Also in some cases, a small pebble will get under a vane and lift it up causing it to get jammed. Simply remove the vanes and clear out any pebbles.

The wall-climbing ability is dependent on the pool pump size and flow. Basically, if you have poor flow the cleaner will only climb the walls to the coves or partial walls. If you have a powerful pump (1.5 to 2.0 hp) and good flow, by inserting the large suction inlet the cleaner will generally climb to the water line in a plaster and PebbleTec pool. Note that for a Tile or Vinyl pool the wall-climbing ability will be less.

There is always the question of getting the 2-wheel or 4-wheel model. If your pool is more than 8 feet deep get the 4-wheel model. Also, if your pool is large and the skimmer is on the far end, go with the 4-wheel model as it comes with two extra one-meter hose lengths. For a small or medium pool, I suggest the 2-wheel model. I also suggest a 2-wheel model for a large pool with a side port, vacuum port in the middle. But when in doubt, go with the 4-wheel model.

Pool Blaster Spa Vac Plus Battery Operated Hot Tub Vacuum

If you are looking for an inexpensive battery-operated vacuum for your above-ground spa the Water Tech Pool Blaster Spa Vac Plus would be an affordable choice. If you compare it to the manual spa wand in price and performance the Pool Blaster Spa Vac comes out on top. Not only is it compact breaking down about 1 ft for storage vs the Spa Wand, it picks up dirt and leaves faster and more effectively.

For around $55.00 and a pack of 4-C batteries, the Spa Vac Plus is not a huge investment.  It works well for small amounts of dirt, sand, and leaf debris and will keep your spa clean and ready for use each time you get in. The Spa Vac Plus is the direct replacement for their Spa Vac Ultra. They look about the same except the front has small brushes instead of the wheels.
