How to Achive Success in Your Pool Service Company

Our business success is often based on our skill level, how well we clean and maintain a pool, and how we deal with people. You are running a swimming pool "service" company, so that places you in the hospitality category in all respects.

A good way of visualizing this is to put yourself at the hotel check-in counter. How would you talk to the people in line? How good are you at solving problems for them? All of this comes into play when you run your pool service business, and developing good people skills is essential.

Treating your customers how you want to be treated extends beyond just the pool service company. It all boils down to relationships. How you want to be treated and how you treat others. Being successful means that customers will refer you to friends and family. One way to gauge your success is by looking at a pie chart of how you land new customers. If over 50% of that is referrals, you are winning.

People skills are essential because you are running a service business and are providing specific “work” in return for payment. You are not selling a product; the product is you and the service you provide. So, you will make mistakes, and customers will get mad. You will need to develop good people skills.

Good, solid business skills are essential. You are in business to make money and not just out there “spinning your wheels.” So, it would be best if you learned how to draw up a business plan that includes charging enough per pool so that you turn a profit. Service prices vary from region to region, so it is up to you to set the best price for your area.

In some cases, your people skills need to be better than your pool cleaning skills. Anyone can learn to clean a pool, but not everyone can handle customers.

Getting your finances in order is a fantastic way to get your business finances in order. A great resource I used successfully was the Dave Ramsey plan to become Debt Free myself. Learning how to run your finances is critical; you must manage your finances to manage your business finances.

Be an honest person. Being a person of Integrity takes a lot of effort. I was never taught the value of being open as a youngster, so I had to learn it as an adult. If you lie to your customers and they find out, your reputation will be damaged. And in the service business, your reputation is everything.

How we speak to other people is a reflection of our character. If you constantly use foul language in your conversation, your customers might lose respect for you—many, like myself, form opinions based on how you talk and carry yourself. Foul language is offensive to many people, and you won’t even know sometimes that you offended them as they are unlikely to say anything.

What Makes a Swimming Pool Product "Good?"

Several factors contribute to making a swimming pool product "good." These factors generally revolve around the product's effectiveness, durability, safety, ease of use, and overall value. Here are some key considerations:

Performance and Effectiveness:
If a product doesn’t do what it intends, it is not a good product. Many products fall somewhere into a range of effectiveness. For example, if you pay $1,600 for the Polaris Alpha IQ you would expect it to leave your pool spotless. And, it does just that. It is one of the most effective robotic pool cleaners on the market today. The primary criterion is how well the product performs its intended function. This could include water cleaning, maintenance, or enhancing the swimming experience for pool products.

Durability and Quality:
If a product costs $130.00, you expect it to hold up like a $130 product. PoolSkim is a good example of this. There really are no moving parts and it is just a molded piece of plastic. So, it will last for years and years.  A good pool product should be built to last. It should be made from durable materials that can withstand exposure to pool chemicals, UV rays, and weather conditions.

Ease of Use:
There is no doubt that consumers like easy. If you make something requiring more thought beyond opening the box and plugging it in, you are asking for trouble. A lot of negative reviews online are just user errors. That is why a grand instruction manual is a must.

Value for Money:
It’s a no-brainer that pool industry products are expensive. It’s a niche market and very seasonal, so it makes sense the manufacturers would want to capture 12 months of profit in 6 months. So, there is a built-in price for that reason, and everything costs more in the pool industry. But we also want value for our money. The Riptide SL Vacuum System is an excellent example of value for the price. $1,800 later, you can clean pools twice as fast and sleep easy at night during a windstorm, knowing that the next day, you have the weapon of choice to clean the pool quickly and effectively.

Customer Service: Riptide is again a great example of excellent customer service. If you have a problem, they will do everything they can to solve it. If you can’t get the product aftercare, you are hoping every day that the product will not fail. It’s critical to have excellent warranty service and customer support. The cheaper the product, the less support you will have. The more expensive, the better customer support. It is built into the pricing. If you purchase a Dolphin Liberty 200 Robotic Cleaner and have a problem, Maytronics, the parent company, will warranty it and repair it. If you buy a Robotic Pool Cleaner on Amazon, you are usually out of luck. But again, the price point will reflect that.

Riptide SL Pole Holder

The Riptide SL Cart Pole Holder allows you to hold any standard pool pole on the front of your Riptide SL Cart. Easy Installation, no drilling necessary; the pole holder will clamp directly onto the front of your Riptide cart.

This is a must-have accessory for your Riptide SL cart, allowing you to walk back to your service accounts with one hand free. It's convenient if you need to open a gate or otherwise have your hands free. I find that it also allows for easier balance when pulling the Riptide SL cart without one hand holding an 8 ft pole.

Other Accessories:
The salt carrier simply clips onto the front of the cart and allows you to transport salt bags, chlorine jugs, or filter cartridges to and from the pool. No installation is required, it will simply clip onto the front of your cart. You will need to remove the salt carrier before loading your Riptide back into the transportation rack.

Riptide has the solution to this with their New!  Handlebar Organizer and their Quart Bottle/Tab Holder.

HANDLEBAR ORGANIZER $ 80.00

The Handlebar Organizer can hold a leaf rake, brush, Taylor test kit, test strips, tools, and whatever else you wish to add to it. This will leave the bins open for chemicals and other pool tools. The organizer has opened up the possibilities with the Riptide SL cart, and you can bring some much-needed supplies back with you now to every stop.

QUART BOTTLE/TAB HOLDER $30.00 each

You can add as many as 4 of the Quart Bottle Holders to the Riptide, which is a great way to bring back the industry-standard Quart Bottles and Spray Bottles to your stops. You can also transport up to 5 Tri-Chlor Tablets back with you in one of the holders.

More about the Riptide SL:
The Riptide Pool Vacuum System made its debut in late 2016. Since then, it has gone through several transformations. The Riptide Circa 2021 is the finest version yet, and it is packed with so many updated features it should have been called the Riptide SL 2.0. Listen as David Sargent
President goes over some of the features for you in person.

Here are some of the great updated features:
High Torque Motor (uses rare earth magnets) High Torque Motor- Our new High Torque motor utilizes rare earth magnets, making it the most powerful vacuum on the market

The cord -the new protective external layer –feels solid and durable.

Cord Clip – secures the cord to the cart so there are no more worries of it falling off and dragging on the ground.

Stainless steel end plates on the vacuum head

The cart is now e-coated before powder coating & the Transport Rack Is e-coated now, too - Electrostatic Coating- All of our powder-coated parts are now electrostatic coated (coating) and then powder coated over. This makes the finish of our components much more durable.

Extremely high-quality integrated steering knuckle -Integrated Stainless Steel Steering Knuckle. This allows you to hook any pole directly up to the Riptide vacuum without needing any adaptors while maneuvering in the water is effortless.

The SL model Riptides now includes a Diagnostic/Tool Kit with a battery load tester, the load tester is essential for quickly determining battery condition.

The bags now have a different ring color to differentiate different microns.

The bags (100 Micron and below) are double layers now, this feature is making the bags last much longer.

25 Micron Bag available (specialty dust bag) this bag can eliminate the need to system vac a pool with a dust problem.

The updated Riptide SL is the most durable vacuum system today. The shell is backed by a 10-year warranty, the added steel plates to the vacuum head sides, the stainless steel knuckle, and the new beefed-up cord make it designed to last! The cart and transport rack has been given a stronger paint job thanks to the new Electrostatic coating!

Pool Guy on Real Estate Investing!

Real Estate is how we have been investing for the past 23 years. We don’t flip the houses but keep them and rent them out. I have been a landlord in Southern California since 2001, giving me over 23 years of experience. I have done everything from eviction and fighting with the city planning/code enforcement department to removing a dead body. Being a landlord takes some getting used to and you do need to have some people skills.

Real estate offers many key benefits, and here are a few:

1) The tenants are paying off the mortgage for you.
2) You get a great tax write-off with rental real estate
3) Your assets will grow at the rate of inflation or above that rate.
4) It’s relatively safe, and you have a tangible physical asset
5) After 30 years or sooner, you will hold it debt-free
6) Rents go up at the rate of inflation.
7) You can draw equity money out when needed with a cash-out refi.
8) You can do a 1031 exchange for a larger property with zero tax implications.
9) Under the right conditions, your rentals can produce cash flow.

But you don’t have to do real estate. You can just invest in Roth IRAs, Mutual funds, Investment funds, and other investments of these types that take very little hands-on operation. We like real estate and the benefits of owning properties debt-free. The key is to find an investment you want and then to consistently put money into it year after year.

As the recent FTX failure showed I would avoid risky investments that promise high rates of return. You don’t need any crazy return on your investment. 8%-10% a year will make you a millionaire over 30 years in very safe investment funds.

You also need to consider that as you get older, your body will start to break down. You can’t service and clean pools forever. One way to extend the life of your service business is what I call the Empire Building. Keep acquiring more and more collections and bring on an employee, and then keep adding pools and employees until you reach a level where you don’t need to be in the field every day. This could mean 150 pools, 300 pools, or 1,000 or more.

Another option is working for a company in the industry after you call it quits on your route. Hayward, Pentair, Jandy, and Leslie are all looking to hire former pool pros. They pay well and you may find the work on the other side of the industry very rewarding. It is something to consider and a way to continue to earn a good income and save on the wear and tear of your body.

A good retirement calculator can be found here:
https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/riq

Just enter your goal and what you already invest and in 2 minutes the site will let you know how you are doing.

The bottom line is it is never too early or too late to start planning. Start today.

You can also buy in bulk and save even more money. To order in bulk:

These bags feature a universal design utilizing a bungee cord that can be sized for each vacuum system currently on the market. They will easily fit your Power Vac, Hammer-Head, Riptide, and Bottom Feeder. Simply fit the bag over your vacuum system and adjust the bungee cord to size and then zip tie it down. The bungee cord makes it easy to put the bag on and take it off and if it was sized correctly these bags will not blow off the top of the cleaner.

Use the 90 microns for sand and silt, leaves, and some dirt. The 200-micron is great for sand and silt, large leaf debris, rocks, and glass. The 400-micron is their heavy-duty bag and is great for everything, although it won’t pick up the finer sand and dirt. But the 400-micron bag is very long-lasting and great for those heavy debris pools.

Also available from Clear Pool Products is the Quart Bottle Holder. If you have a Riptide, Power Vac or Hammer-Head this quart bottle holder would be the perfect accessory for you.

Swimming Pool Suction Side Cleaner Not Moving

Here are a few things about the equipment that I check first when I find a cleaner not moving in the pool:

1. Make sure the filter is clean- if it is a D.E. Filter, Clean it or Backwash it. For a Sand Filter, Backwash it to make sure it is clean. For a Cartridge Filter, open it up and clean the cartridges.

2. Ensure the filter operates correctly – no broken grids or old cartridges. If the PSI on the gauge is over 25-30, the cleaner may not work. The optimal filter PSI is around 20 or less.

3. Make sure the pump is working correctly. If air gets into the pump, the cleaner may not move. This is called a vacuum leak or suction leak. Air will prevent the pump from pulling water the extra 30 ft through the cleaner hose. You can typically check for an air leak by disconnecting the cleaner. If the pump primes up fine but loses its prime once you reconnect the cleaner, I would suspect an air leak. The likely location is the threaded fitting on top of the pump and the threaded fitting going into the pump. I would also check the pump lid o-ring.

4. Make sure the cleaner has proper suction. If it is connected to the pool skimmer with the OEM regulator valve that came with your cleaner – refer to the manual for proper adjustment. For example, if it is a Hayward Aquanaut, the regulator with it has a dial on it. Close the dial to increase the cleaner's suction, and then open the dial to increase the skimmer's suction. If the cleaner is connected at the side/vacuum port, make sure that you adjust the valve so that enough suction goes to the cleaner.

5. Check the pump basket. If the pump basket is clogged with debris, it will sometimes slow the cleaner down and stop it completely. Clean the pump basket out.

6. If you have a Variable Speed (VS) pump, make sure that your pump is set at a high enough speed, known as RPM. Typically, most cleaners will need at least 2600 RPM to operate correctly. Sometimes more and sometimes less. I usually start at 3100 RPM and then dial it down from there.

Here is what to check on the cleaner itself:

1. Check for any debris clogging the mouth of the cleaner. It is best to do this with the cleaner running. Carefully pull it to the side of the pool, and with the cleaner head still underwater, turn it so you can see the more sterile opening. Check for any rocks, piles of leaves, and even a rodent stuck in the mouth.

2. If it is a bouncing type cleaner, typically, it has a rubber diaphragm (Zodiac Cleaners). Check the diaphragm for any tears or cuts. Replacing it is easy and will likely get those cleaners moving again.

3. If you have an MX cleaner – Zodiac MX8 or MX6 and any variation of those two, typically the tracks are worn out. It could also be the Directional Device.

4. If it is a Hayward Navigator or Hayward Pool Vac, it is more than likely a worn-out A-Frame and Turbine. You would purchase the A-Frame kit and replace it to get the Navigator or Pool Vac moving again.

5. Sometimes, a hose section gets debris clogged inside of it. To check for this, with the pool running, pull off the first hose section from the cleaner and remove the cleaner head. Keeping the hose underwater, pull off each section one by one until you find the hose section clogged with debris. You want the pool on because you will not feel any suction until you reach the clogged hose and remove it. Then, you will feel the pool suction through the hose again. Just be sure to keep the hoses underwater so that the pump will not suck air.

6. If there is a canister, sometimes it can get full of debris and become impacted. In that case, simply empty the canister.

These are the main reasons an automatic suction side cleaner will stop moving.

VacDaddy NEW! Large Debris Bags

The VacDaddy is constantly improving and innovating, and with their new larger bags, the VacDaddy is even more versatile. The new bags increase debris capacity by 60%, making vacuuming more accessible.

New Felt Filter Bag

$44.95

The new and improved VacDaddy Felt Filter Bag offers a more durable option for cleaning. Now, with a 60% larger surface area and 108% bigger volume, this bag features 75-micron cleaning. The density of the bag traps more fine debris, enabling you to put more polish on your pool, and traps finer particles than our competitor's simple nylon mesh bags.

 New Mesh Filter Bag

$44.95

The new and improved VacDaddy Mesh Filter Bag offers a lightweight, easy cleaning, filtration. Now with a 60% larger surface area and 108% bigger volume. This bag features cleaning to 200 microns, perfect for weekly vacuums and touch-ups. We like the mesh bag for ease of use and quick cleaning when the bag is full.

 New Leaf Filter Bag-PREORDER NOW!

$44.95

With a cleaning capacity of 100 microns, the new VacDaddy Leaf Filter Bag allows smaller particles (dust, dirt, sand, mud, algae) to pass through while protecting the impeller from larger debris such as leaves, sticks, acorns, etc. Its user-friendly design makes it a go-to choice for quick cleaning when the bag reaches its capacity. Elevate your pool care routine with the convenience and effectiveness of the VacDaddy Leaf Filter Bag.

The vacuum-to-waste aspect of the VacDaddy is a true game-changer for your pool route. Now, you can use the VacDaddy to do clean-ups, green pool clean-ups, and any other use that requires a portable pump to vacuum a pool to waste. This makes the VacDaddy a truly versatile vacuum and expands its service from a daily vacuum to a device that takes the place of a larger portable pump.

Here is more about the VacDaddy unit from the manufacturer:

The primary benefit of The VacDaddy is EASE-OF-USE.

Lightweight and compact. At only 10 pounds, The VacDaddy is easy to operate and maneuver.

The minimal assembly is easy and intuitive. No special training is required to use it. Plug in and Just Vac It.

Fast pool cleaning with more vacuuming power than other heavy-duty commercial vacuums.

Eliminates the need to set up and prime a bulky hose.

Perfect for touch-ups between weekly cleanings and to reach areas robotic vacuums can't quickly get to.

The VacDaddy is the most potent portable pool vacuum new to the market with a continuous power supply. The VacDaddy's continuous power eliminates dependency on batteries with limited life. The VacDaddy is lightweight, easy to use, powerful, and requires no poolside assembly or training.

So, where would I place the VacDaddy as compared to, say, a Riptide, Hammer-Head, or PowerVac? It does pump a pretty impressive 55-60 GPM, so it is not like a Water Tech cleaner, except the Precision 2.0 that pulls about 25 GPM. It looks similar to the 2.0, but the power difference sets the Vac Daddy apart. It feels like you are using the pool filtration system with the vacuum connected to the skimmer. In reality, most pools will pull about 60 GPM unless powered by a three-hp pump, considering the resistance of the plumbing and distance from the skimmer. Having all of that power sitting right behind the vac head is fantastic.

You also need access to a socket for this to work at your customer's home. It comes with a power unit that needs to be plugged in. Most pool owners will have a socket by their pool or equipment area. It comes with 45 45-foot cord that attaches from the power unit to the VacDaddy and has the look and feel of a robotic pool cleaner cable. The cord was not a big deal for me as I knew that the 60 GPM would only be produced by an external power source.

Degrii Zima Pro Hybrid Robotic Pool Cleaner

The Degrii Zima Pro is a hybrid cordless robotic pool cleaner that will give you more options than your standard cordless robotic pool cleaner. The battery is in a floating tethered control box which will give it a longer run time -3 hours and it allows the cleaner to be app controlled. One thing wifi cannot do is work underwater.

Another benefit of having app control is that the Firmware of the cleaner can easily be updated. After testing the cleaner for a month, I received a new Firmware update that corrected a few things in the cleaning pattern. This will make the Zima Pro even better in the future with each software update.

Let's get the negative points out of the way. The cable from the robot to the controller is 11.5 ft. This should be good for most pools with standard deep ends of 6 ft to 10 ft. It is a rather heavy robot weighing over 20 lbs, and then, of course, you are transporting both the cleaner and the controller back and forth to the pool. Last, the current filters only filter down to 180 microns. So, this cleaner will not pick up the finer dirt.

The app control is very good, and you will find that the manual mode works great as well. You can select floors only, floors and walls (Overall), or walls only.

The battery comes with a 2-year warranty, and they offer lifetime support.

The good news is that this cleaner works very well. The cleaning pattern is smart, and it does not get stuck on the main drain or step areas of a pool. The floating battery gives it a very long 3-hour run time which is a nice bonus. There is also a Lift button that will allow the cleaner to come to the side of the pool and climb the wall for easy retrieval

Draining Your Swimming Pool

Draining your swimming pool sounds simple enough. But there are many things to be aware of, and some things you overlook could cost you thousands of dollars and could cause potential damage to your pool.

Plaster/cement and Pebble Tec pools are the only in-ground pool types you can safely drain. If you drain a drop-in fiberglass pool down, the walls may collapse and damage the pool. If you drain in an in-ground vinyl pool, the liner can separate from the wall, severely damaging the pool to the point where you will need a new liner. The drop-in Fiberglass Pool and an in-ground Vinyl Pool should only be drained by a company specializing in them. Otherwise, you can damage these types of pools by draining them down.

The first thing to check is how your city looks at pool draining. Most towns in every region ban draining your pool directly into the gutter outside the street. Here in my area, if you drain a green pool or a blue pool directly into the road in front of your house, you will get cited, and the fines can range from $5,000 to $10,000—a steep price to pay for not following the city rules.

The best place to drain a pool is directly into the sewer line. Locating the sewer line on the property can be the hard part. If the customer has never had his mainline snaked by a plumber, they may not know where it is even located. You are looking for a black pipe with a square cap that will fit an adjustable wrench. Usually, it is 3 inches or more in diameter. I found some right behind the kitchen sink in the house. Sometimes, they are next to a bathroom. I saw a few just on the side of the house. Mine is on my garage floor, covered with a metal cap. If it is set low enough, some may be surrounded by bushes or dirt.

If you need help locating the sewer line, one trick is to use the washing machine waste line. This also goes directly into the sewer. If the washing machine is in a downstairs room or the garage, remove the waste line and insert your pool hose, ensuring it is deep enough to stay in and not fall out. Now, you can drain the pool into the sewer line through the washing machine’s waste line.

You also want to avoid draining the pool directly into the yard around the pool. This may sound like a no-brainer, but letting the water run into the dirt around your pool area may seem convenient. The problem with this is that you put 15,000 or 20,000 gallons of water directly into the soil around your pool, raising the water table – meaning the ground is saturated. Once the pool is empty, the weight of the water is no longer holding the pool down. If the water under the pool is very wet, the pool may lift and pop out. This is called pool pop-out, which is rare, but draining the water into the soil around the pool could cause this.

Speaking of pools popping out, it is infrequent. The ground will need to be saturated with water, which can only happen if you drain the pool into the soil or if you have some severe rain, 4-6 inches in a short time. The pool shell is heavy with all of the gunite and rebar, so it is not a shared experience. A pool builder in Florida constructed over 2,000 pools, and only two pools ever popped out. Both pools were empty after the gunite, and there was hurricane-type rainfall. You should not be concerned about the pool popping out in most areas.

One concern when the pool is empty is the ambient temperature. If you drain a pool in 95-100-degree weather and leave it empty for more than 24 hours, there is a chance the Sun can damage the exposed plaster surface. After refilling, you may notice cracking and chipping of the plaster. This is due to Sun exposure, and if the plaster is older or in poor shape, you risk damaging it by draining the pool on a scorching day. You also want to avoid draining a pool that has chips and cracks in it to begin with. This will lead to more chipping and cracking.

Saltwater Generator and the Winter Months

Your swimming pool saltwater generator will eventually stop producing chlorine when the water temperature of the pool drops to the low 60-degree mark. In that case, you can turn off your saltwater generator and switch to an alternate chlorine choice.

Liquid chlorine is best, and you don't need too much in the winter months. Liquid chlorine mimics your saltwater generator and is the closest chlorine type to what your salt cell produces. However, you may want to use Dichlor as a monthly sanitizer since it is about 50% cyanuric acid, and this will allow you to add CYA to your pool in the winter months, and maybe you will not need to recharge your pool's CYA level in the spring.

You can also do what I do in southern California: install a floater in the pool and tie it to the skimmer lid with a string. That way, it is not floating all over the pool, which could cause some potential staining on the step areas or ledge areas from the Trichlor tablets in the floater. Trichlor tablets are also 50% Cyunaric Acid, and you can add a small amount of CYA to your saltwater pool each week in the Winter using Trichlor tablets.

In the end, if you do not want to add any CYA to your pool water, use liquid chlorine, which does not contain Cyunaric Acid.

Below are some tips to make sure when spring arrives, your saltwater generator will be ready to start producing chlorine again.

Pool Size:
A significant factor is how large your pool is or how many gallons of water are in it. If your pool is 8,000 gallons, the SWG will have an easier time producing chlorine. The larger the pool, the larger the Salt Cell rating is needed and the longer the run time.

Salt Cell Size:
Each SWG has different salt cell sizes. For example, the Intellichor 40 and Hayward T-Cell 15 are rated for a pool of up to 40,000 gallons. The Ichlor 30 and Jandy TruClear are placed for collections up to 30,000—the Intellichlor IC20 is for a pool of up to 20,000 gallons. Your salt cell should be rated for your pool size to be adequate. If you put an IC20 in a 25,000-gallon pool, it must run 24/7 to be partially effective. An IC40 in a 15,000-gallon collection would be ideal, with plenty of margins.

Salt Cell Output Setting:
A SWG will allow you to change the chlorine output on your salt cell. You can run your salt cell at 100% output, meaning as long as the pump is on, the SWG will make chlorine. If you set it at 50%, that means that during one hour when the pump is on, it will be off for 30 minutes and on for 30 minutes. It will only produce ½ the chlorine at 50% output. The output % is another factor.

Pump Run Time:
The longer you run your pool pump, the more chlorine the SWG will produce. If you run your pump for 20 hours, the SWG set at 100% produces more chlorine than a pool running for 10 hours at 100% output. If you have a variable-speed pump, running it at 3000 RPM for 8 hours will produce more chlorine than running it at 2400 RPM for 8 hours. Note that the max speed of a pump is calculated at 3450 RPM, which is the speed of a standard single-speed non-variable speed pump.

Cyanuric Acid Level (CYA):
Like any other form of chlorine, the SWG produces chlorine that needs to be protected from the harsh UV rays of the sun. Ideally, your CYA level should be 30-50 ppm, but if you notice the chlorine level is still not holding, you can increase the CYA to 80 ppm. If the CYA is below 30 ppm, chances are your SWG will be producing chlorine at a rate less than the UV rays' burn-off. Check to make sure the CYA is at alt least 30 ppm.

Overall Water Quality:
Phosphates, nitrates, contaminants like suntan lotion, body oil, and pets swimming all affect how the chlorine produced by your SWG is used up. If you have a Phosphate level over 500 ppb, the chlorine generated won't hold daily. If the pool has a very high bather load every day, the SWG can't keep up with the usage. Treat these issues to ensure the SWG can produce enough chlorine each day. If you have a high bather load, increase the pump run time and set the SWG to 100% output.

Water Temperature:
The colder the water, the less effective the SWG production will be. SWG works poorly in colder water, and most of them stop generating chlorine when the water temperature is in the 60-degree range.

Dirty Salt Cell:
If the salt cell has calcium buildup on the cell plates, it will produce less chlorine, even at 100% output. Make sure you inspect your salt system regularly to see if any warning lights on the controller indicate a dirty salt cell (calcium buildup on the plates).

Salt Level:
If the salt level is below 3000 ppm, most SWG will work at a reduced output or won't work at all. Make sure to check the pool's salinity level or salt level so that it is at the manufacturer's recommended level.

To set your SWG output, you will need to combine some of these factors to get the 3-5 ppm chlorine output. If you notice that chlorine is at one ppm and your pool's runtime is good, the SWG is set to only 40%, increasing the output. If your output is 100% and your pump is not running long enough, increase your run time. Combining these factors will allow you to set the correct chlorine output level.

The VacDaddy was invented by a 35-year veteran of the pool service industry who has worked with hundreds of pool owners. He has long believed a better way to clean your pool should exist. Commercial vacuums require 20 minutes to set up and detailed instructions to use. Other options include weak-battery vacuums or heavy robots that take hours to clean your pool.

Cleaning your carpets doesn't require all this setup and weightlifting, so why should you clean your pool? We have devoted ourselves to perfecting The VacDaddy Pool Vacuum System. The goal was to create a durable, lightweight, powerful cleaner that is easy to use, and we have done just that. The VacDaddy system will allow users to clean their pools in less time with less effort. Like your carpet vacuum, plugin, and JUST VAC IT!

Vacuuming spas and steps are a little tricky. You have to tilt the vacuum down so that you don't shoot water everywhere, which they are addressing soon with an attachment to reduce the water flow.

It comes with two bags, which seem relatively small compared to a Vacuum System bag. The VacDaddy is not designed for big leaf debris clean-up, but if you have an average amount of leaves and dirt in a pool, this will work perfectly. It is suitable for pools with light to medium debris and dirt.

The VacDaddy is positioned to be a player in the portable vacuum sector. Yes, it is hard to categorize precisely, but if you are looking for a tool to speed up your day on your route, this is one to consider.

Gas Heater VS a Heat Pump Which is Better for Your Swimming Pool?

If you are trying to decide between having a gas heater installed or going with a heat pump, you are in the right place. Each is vastly different, but both can be a viable option under the right circumstances.

One thing to keep in mind is that they are set up to either use natural gas or electricity. This means you will need a dedicated gas line run from the meter to the Gas Heater. You will need a larger upgraded gas meter in most cases as well. For the Heat Pump, you will need a dedicated 230V line run to a sub-panel for the Heat Pump since it generates somewhere around 50 amps when operating. Both of these options, if not already existing, are very expensive to run. It is not easy to switch from a Gas Heater to a Heat Pump and vice versa. In a new pool, it is easy enough to install either.

Gas heaters and heat pumps are two standard methods of heating a home or a pool. They operate using different principles and have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Here are some key points to consider when comparing the two:

Gas Heater:
Operational Principle:
Fuel Source: Gas heaters burn natural gas or propane to generate heat.
Heat Generation: They produce heat through combustion, which is then transferred to the water or air.
Efficiency:
Gas heaters tend to be very efficient in quickly raising the temperature of water or air, making them suitable for pools and homes in colder climates.
Initial Cost:
Gas heaters usually have a lower upfront cost compared to heat pumps.
Climate Considerations:
They work well in all climates, including frigid environments, where they can maintain consistent heat output.
Rapid Heating:
Gas heaters can quickly raise the temperature, making them ideal for on-demand heating.
Operating Costs:
While the initial cost may be lower, the ongoing operational costs can be higher due to the cost of natural gas or propane.
Environmental Impact:
Burning natural gas or propane emits greenhouse gases, contributing to environmental concerns.

Heat Pump:
Operational Principle:
Heat Transfer: Heat pumps use electricity to transfer heat from the outside air or ground to warm the water or air.
Efficiency:
They are highly efficient for maintaining a consistent temperature but may struggle in freezing climates.
Initial Cost:
Heat pumps tend to have a higher upfront cost compared to gas heaters.
Climate Considerations:
They work best in moderate to warm climates with a stable source of heat to extract from the environment.
Operating Costs:
Heat pumps generally have lower ongoing operational costs compared to gas heaters, especially in areas with lower electricity rates.
Environmental Impact:
Heat pumps are considered more environmentally friendly as they do not directly emit greenhouse gases during operation. However, the electricity used to power them may be generated from fossil fuels.
Long-term Savings:
While the initial cost may be higher, the lower operating costs of a heat pump may lead to overall savings.
Considerations:
Climate: Your local weather will play a significant role in determining which option is more suitable. In colder climates, a gas heater might be a better choice, whereas in milder temperatures, a heat pump could be more efficient.
Upfront Costs vs. Long-term Savings: Consider your budget and long-term cost considerations. While a gas heater may have a lower initial cost, a heat pump may save you money in the long run due to lower operating costs.
Environmental Impact: If environmental concerns are important to you, a heat pump may be the most eco-friendly.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your needs, budget, and climate conditions. It's advisable to consult with a professional or an HVAC specialist to evaluate your situation and provide personalized recommendations.

Toxic Chemical Smells Around Your Pool

Toxic smells are all part of the job. It's an unavoidable occupational hazard. However, you should be aware of some of the more dangerous smells so you don't fall into harm's way.

#1 on the list would be Trichlor tablets in a small body of water. This can happen when the lid of a Trichlor tablet bucket is not secure, and water gets into the bucket. Or this could happen when a Trichlor chlorinator is full of tablets, but they fail to dissolve, and you remove the lid. Since Thrichlor is made up of chlorine and acid (Cyanuric Acid), the smell is likened to Mustard Gas used in WWI and can be overwhelming and debilitating. It can cause your lungs to stop working and, depending on how much you have to breathe in, could become a medical emergency.

There was one member of my group who suffered lung damage and, for months, could not take a deep breath after opening a Trichlor bucket that was full of tablets and water. Be extremely cautious when opening a Trichlor tablet bucket at one of your stops if the following is true:

You just took over the service account and did not deliver the bucket yourself.
It is the rainy season, and you are still determining if water has gotten into the bucket.
You come upon a bucket without a lid on it
The bucket looks very old and weather-worn
You suspect water might be in the bucket

For the In-line or Off-line Trichlor tablet feeder/chlorinator:
The chlorine reading is 0.0, but you know the chlorinator has tablets.
It is a new service account, and you have never opened the lid before
You open the top and see intact tablets after one week
After removing the cover, you smell a strong chemical odor

I caution that whenever you remove the Trichlor Feeder lid, you are not standing directly over it, nor do I suggest looking into it from now on. Always open it at arm's length and then wait a few seconds to make sure that there is no strong chemical smell.

Other odors to be aware of are dead rodents, birds, or lizards. These can give off very little odor while in the pool skimmer or floating in the pool and sitting on the bottom. Once you pull them out, however, the smell can be overpowering. The same goes for earthworms at the bottom of a pool. Be prepared for a horrible smell. Although it is not toxic, it still can be overpowering.

A strange chemical smell from the pool water itself can be Chloramines. Chloramines are chemical compounds formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter like sweat, urine, and other bodily fluids. They can create a strong, unpleasant odor commonly associated with "pool smell." To reduce chloramines:

Maintain proper water chemistry: Regularly test and adjust the pH and chlorine levels in the pool.
Use shock treatment: Superchlorination (or "shocking" the pool) can help break down chloramines and restore water clarity.
Encourage proper hygiene: Encourage swimmers to shower before entering the pool and to avoid urinating in the water.

Dealing with Pools that Get a Ton of Leaves

If you have a pool that gets a lot of leaf debris each week or service pools with heavy debris, there are a few things you can do to make it at least manageable. I will review some things that will help you the most with a heavy debris pool.

This sounds simple, and it is probably the thing that will help the most, but it is one thing many customers do not want to do. Trim the trees and keep them trimmed back every season. Trimming the trees around the pool can go a long way in eliminating excessive leaf debris. It is probably way overdue if you haven’t had your trees trimmed in years. Cutting the trees removes all the leaf debris that would fall into the pool over time and will also prevent a lot of the leaves that would fall in from overhanging branches. I have had many clients also take a tree or several trees out because managing the debris was a losing battle. But simply trimming the trees around the pool will help.

A device that I love and works surprisingly well is the PoolSkim. It is a simple device that you connect to one of your pool’s return lines and acts as a secondary skimmer. You will need 1 ½” threaded return lines to connect the PoolSkim, but once combined, it uses the return jet to trap debris into a bag. Amazingly, you will see an 80% or more drop in the total leaf debris not only on the surface but also on the bottom. The PoolSkim will pick up the leaves before they can drop to the bottom of the pool.

To learn more about the PoolSkim, https://youtu.be/BLtN702NrJQ

Once the debris falls to the bottom of the pool, a conventional manual vacuum attached to your pool system will usually not be effective. The waste is generally too large for the vacuum head. The cheapest way to pick up the leaf debris is a Leaf Bagger or Leaf Master. This device is designed to use water pressure to push debris into a large bag on top. They work surprisingly well. You would attach a garden hose to the Leaf Master, attach the Leaf Master to your standard pool pole, and drop it to the pool bottom. Turn on the garden hose and watch the debris be blasted into the bag on top. Very practical and easy to use.

To learn more about the Leaf Master, https://youtu.be/KT4Yo2H4EY4

If you do service for a living, the Leaf Master is great, but to maximize your time, you are better off investing in a Vacuum System. This is a device that has been around for about 15 years and works off of the same concept of a Leaf Master but on steroids. It is powered by a 30 lbs. thrust motor, think powerboat, and a large battery, much like the ones found on boats and power wheelchairs. You can typically run a vacuum system for hours before recharging the battery. This means you can quickly vacuum multiple heavy debris pools and save tons of time on your route. These are very handy for wind-prone areas like mine, where the Santa Ana winds make a mess of everything from October through February.

There are a few popular vacuum systems, and I have videos of the three I use.

Riptide Vacuum System: https://youtu.be/7G0WBEmc6fs

A vacuum system is a significant investment, with prices starting at $1,000 and going up to $1,700, but in the long run, they will pay off. Even if you are a homeowner with a heavy debris pool, a vacuum system is a way to go over spending the money on a Robotic or Pressure Side Cleaner. For the exact cost, you can purchase a Power Vac or Riptide with a battery case and easily vacuum your pool each week—something to consider if your collection is trashed with debris.
A pool that gets a lot of debris each week can be a real pain to keep clean. But with the right equipment, you can make quick work of it.

Do Variable Speed Pool Pumps save you money?

The pool pump can be the highest energy hog in your house, passing your Air Conditioner and Refrigerator just by the sheer number of hours it runs each day. If you have a 1 ½ or 2 HP pump installed and you run it 8 hours per day, not to get into complicated conversions of kWh (Kilowatt Hours) and how your Electric Company charges you each month, imagine it as having 20-100 watt light bulbs on every hour. That is a lot of electricity each day, and if your bill is tiered by usage, the more you use, the more you are charged, and your account can get very high very quickly. On average, a pool pump in the Summer will be about 40% of your total electricity bill.

So, the best way to save money is to cut into your monthly electricity bill, and that is precisely what a VS pump does. Simply put, your standard pump runs at 3450 RPM (Rotations Per Minute) which is about 1800-2000 watts. A VS Pump can be set to different RPMs; at every lower RPM, the total wattage is lowered. So, dropping the VS Pump down to 2100 RPM cuts the watts down to 685. At 2100 RPM, the water will appear to flow as strong as a standard pump running at 3450 RPM. Cut it down even lower to 1800 RPM; you are down to 165 watts. So, instead of running 20-100-watt light bulbs, you only have a little over one light bulb running each hour. So, it is hard to see the VS pump energy savings, but if you look at the monthly drop in your electricity bill, you will see the savings reflected there.

You may notice that the pool doesn't stay as clean with a VS pump, which leads you to believe that the pump isn't working as well as your old single-speed pump. That is just one drawback of not running your pump at the whole 3450 RPM. One way to address this is running a short, higher speed RPM for 2-3 hours (2,800-3,000 RPM). That way, the surface debris can be pushed into the skimmer, leaving the pool cleaner each day.

Many consumers balk at the higher price tag of a VS pump, but that is due, for the most part, to the "Drive" on the top of the VS motor (some are now internal). This drive allows the pump to run at a different speed, and this is the brain of the pump. Many also have a controller mounted to the pump, which acts as the VS pump's timer. These extra components are what cause the price of the VS pump to be more expensive than a standard single-speed pump. It's not the manufacturers charging more just to make more money but that these pumps cost more to the manufacturer, which translates into a higher price tag for you.

A VS pump is a more significant investment that will save you 60-80% on your electricity bill and pay for itself in 2 years.

Purity Pool Leaf Rakes

In 1971, Purity Pool introduced the first net with a turned edge for scooping, as well as the first with straight sides to hug the tile line and collect debris near the pool edge. Many other innovations have followed over the years, making Purity Pool the industry leader in professional quality scoops and rakes for the service professional and discerning homeowner. We've recently introduced more innovations and improvements than ever before.

It's no secret to anyone that Purity Pool's specialty, not to mention "bread and butter" is nets. With five scoop/rake frames, two pull-rake frames, and five bag designs, for a total of eighteen available configurations, we believe we have the options covered. However, variety is just part of the story. What really sets Purity nets apart from the competition is the quality materials and workmanship that go into every product we make.

From the inside out
Don't be fooled by products that look like ours. There are differences that you cannot see. First off, we start with the best aluminum alloy for the job (no, we don't tell anyone what alloy that is!) and with our own special in-house process we treat the metal frames to ensure optimum durability. The original Ultra-Lite and the Spa Scoop use a thinner, super lightweight frame, and all of the others use the thicker more heavy-duty material.

Slippery when wet
The plastic rims used on Purity nets are all made of a special blend of polymers, designed with a high oil content. This means that the rims glide more often than scrape on pool surfaces, prolonging the life of your most important tool. Purity's plastic rims also use the thickest plastic in the heaviest wear areas. Of course, when the edge does wear down, it can be renewed quickly with a Leading-Edge replacement.

A bag for every purpose
We all know the amazing variety of things that are found in pools. Unfortunately, we are unable to fulfil a recent request for a net to remove a Volvo from a pool, but we think we have everything else covered. As for quality, it's simple; we get the best net materials on the market and sew all of our nets ourselves, with every seam stitched three times.
Our "Standard" blue net is easy to see through and cut into the traditional rounded shape. All of the other scoops have a more efficient deep tapered design to minimize drag and hold in debris.
The "Tuff Duty" material withstands the most abuse and rough plaster.
The "Rag Bag" design is the ideal time-saver, emptying with an easy flip of the wrist.
For super low drag when collecting larger debris, the "Leaf Chaser" is ideal.
The "Silt" bag is the best net available for collecting the finest debris.
Of course, since all our nets are designed for service, the Rag Bag, Leaf Chaser, and Silt nets are assembled with a special backing to protect them from premature wear.

Getting a handle on things
Manufacturers of professional scoops and rakes have always battled the tendency for frames to weaken and wear excessively at the handle. Purity Pool has won this battle with the new Enforcer™ handle. The Enforcer’s unique Y-shape support relieves stress at the handle and distributes pressure along the frame. The culmination of over 2 years of development and testing, the Enforcer is now shipping on all Purity Pool scoops.

The Enforcer has been an outstanding hit and has proven to perform its job even better than expected, making all Purity Pool frames much stronger than they had been in the past.
To make it even easier to replace the v-clip, the newest Enforcer handles ships with a special slot and opposing hole. The clip can be replaced in seconds using this method, eliminating any need to ever disassemble the handle itself.

Swimming Pool Chlorine Use in the Winter

During the wintertime, pool chlorine usage typically decreases for a few reasons. This means you will be using less chlorine and, at the same time, less acid. In colder water, chemical usage drops way down.
How much less chlorine is a meter of the region, but typically, in my area of Southern California, chlorine use drops very low. If you were using three Trichlor tablets each week in the Summer, figure one tablet will last you an entire month in the winter. If you were adding 1-gallon of liquid chlorine each week, figure 1-gallon will last all month.

When the water is cold, the pH is much more stable. The LSI Index is also temperature-driven, and in colder water, the more muriatic acid you add, the more corrosive the water. Be careful not to add too much acid in cold water; besides, the pH is much more stable in colder water.

.

1. Lower Bather Load: Pools are generally used less frequently in the winter, especially in colder climates. This means there are fewer people introducing contaminants like sweat, oils, and other organic materials into the water.
2. Slower Algae Growth: Algae growth slows significantly in colder temperatures. Algae thrive in warmer water, so the need for algaecides and shock treatments is reduced during winter.
3. Slower Bacterial Growth: Bacteria grow more slowly in colder water. This means that the demand for chlorine to kill off bacteria is lower.
4. Reduced Sunlight Exposure: Chlorine is sensitive to sunlight (UV rays). In the winter, days are shorter, and the angle of the sun is lower, which means there is less sunlight exposure in your pool. This helps to preserve the chlorine in the water.
However, it's important to note that while chlorine demand is lower in the winter, it's not zero. You still need to maintain chlorine in your pool to prevent bacteria and algae growth.
Here are some tips for winter pool maintenance with regards to chlorine usage:
1. Maintain a Lower Chlorine Level: You can lower the chlorine levels slightly in the winter compared to what you would maintain in the summer. Aim for around 1-3 parts per million (ppm).
2. Monitor pH Levels: Even in the winter, keeping an eye on your pool's pH levels is important. Chlorine effectiveness can be affected by pH levels that are too high or too low.
3. Use Slow-Release Chlorine Products: These can help maintain a consistent chlorine level over a longer period, reducing the need for frequent additions.
4. Keep Debris Out: Even in winter, keeping your pool clean is important. Skim off leaves and debris regularly to prevent them from decomposing and creating additional chlorine demand.

This is also a great time to treat scale in the pool, especially on the plaster. I like using the EasyCare product Beautec and find that treating scale in the winter months is ideal. It comes off easier, and since the pH is very stable, keeping that in range to make the scale removal is also much easier.

Riptide SL Cart Overview Western Pool & Spa Show

Matt Lopez of Riptide has numerous years of product design and development under his belt. He is well-versed in CAD and has an understanding of many different manufacturing processes. After spending some time with other pool cleaners, he was determined to make a better product and poured his heart and soul into developing the Riptide Pool Vacuum System. Here Matt goes over some of the great features of the Riptide SL.

The Riptide Pool Vacuum System made its debut in late 2016. Since then, it has gone through several transformations. The Riptide Circa 2021 is the finest version yet, and it is packed with so many updated features it should have been called the Riptide SL 2.0.

Here are some of the great updated features:
High Torque Motor (uses rare earth magnets) High Torque Motor- Our new High Torque motor utilizes rare earth magnets, making it the most powerful vacuum on the market

The cord -the new protective external layer –just feels so solid and durable

Cord Clip – secures the cord to the cart, so there are no more worries of it falling off and dragging on the ground

Stainless steel end plates on the vacuum head

The cart is now e-coated before powder coating & the Transport Rack Is e-coated now, too - Electrostatic Coating- All of our powder-coated parts are now electrostatic coated (Ecoating) and then powder coated over. This makes the finish of our components much more durable.

Extremely high-quality integrated steering knuckle -Integrated Stainless Steel Steering Knuckle. This allows you to hook any pole directly up to the Riptide vacuum without needing any adaptors while maneuvering in the water is effortless.

The SL model Riptides now includes a Diagnostic/Tool Kit with a battery load tester; the load tester is essential for quickly determining battery condition.

The bags now have a different ring color to differentiate different microns.

The bags (100 Micron and below) are double layers now; this feature is making the bags last much longer.

25 Micron Bag available (specialty dust bag). This bag can eliminate the need to system vacuum a pool with a dust problem.

To see the Handlebar Organizer, Quart Bottle/Tab Holder, Salt Carrier & Pole Holder:

The updated Riptide SL is the most durable vacuum system today. The shell is backed by a 10-year warranty, the added steel plates to the vacuum head sides, the stainless steel knuckle, and the new beefed-up cord make it designed to last! The cart and transport rack has been given a stronger paint job thanks to the new Electrostatic coating!

Let me touch on the cord length choices. I was always a 40 ft cord user and didn’t consider a 60 ft cord much. Until, I tried a Riptide with a 60 ft cord. The difference is pretty amazing. You can vacuum just about any residential pool from one end. Why is that so good? It just is very convenient. No need to park the cart in the center of a pool.  And never run out of slack on top of that. For commercial pools, it is a must. And it is only $60 more at checkout for the longer cord. I would suggest the 60 ft of cord if you are on the fence about it over the 40 ft cord.

The new bag design is cool. Each micron is color-coded now by a different color rim. So if you carry multiple micron bags, you know that the purple is 25 microns and the orange is 100 microns. They are a little harder to get off without the tabs now but it is a trade-off between better bags and the older style. They also are all double-bagged, making them extremely durable.

Pentair WhisperFlo VST Programming and Set Up

The Pentair WhisperFlo VST is a great mid-range VS swimming pool pump. You will also like the ease of programming, which should take about 5 minutes. Here is a video guide on how to set the schedule and pump RPM.

SPEED Buttons - Used to select a desired speed program. When the LED above a SPEED Button is illuminated, that program has been selected or is running. A blinking LED indicates that an External Control has activated that program.

External Control Only LED - Indicates whether the pump is in External Control mode. When LED is illuminated the drive-programmed schedules are disabled and only commands from digital inputs will be acted upon.

Start/Stop LED - Indicates whether the pump is in a Start State. When illuminated, the pump can be started at any time by external controls, drive-programmed schedules or manual inputs. When the pump is stopped, and the LED is not illuminated, the pump is unable to run from any input.

Start/Stop Button - Used to start and stop the pump. When the pump is stopped, and the Start/Stop LED is not illuminated, the pump is unable to run from any input.

Display Parameter LEDs - When illuminated, the LED indicates the information being displayed on the screen. A blinking LED indicates that the parameter is currently being edited.

Display Button - Used to toggle between the different available display modes. This button also sets the clock, screen brightness, and pump address.

Quick Clean Button - Used to run the speed and duration programmed for Quick Clean. When the LED above the Quick Clean Button is illuminated, a Quick Clean cycle is active. Power LED - When illuminated, LED indicates that there is live power being supplied to the pump.

What Pool Water Testing Method is the Best?

You can test your swimming pool water or spa each week in several ways. The most common methods are test strips and reagent test kits. Not as common, but growing are the photometer testers or digital testers. Here is an overview of the different testing methods.

Smart Water Monitors had a popular run a couple of years back, but when the Hayward pHin went under it kind of soured the market. Sutro and WaterGuru are the two that are left on the market, but are very well-made floating water testers that beam the reading right to your device or phone.

Test strips are not only popular but very easy to use. Many different manufacturers make them, like AquaChek, Taylor, and LaMotte, to name a few, and you can find them just about everywhere, from your grocery store, hardware store and local pool store.  You can purchase them online as well, and there are many different types of strips available for testing everything from chlorine and borate to copper in the water. The ease of use of test strips makes these great for beginners. Just dip them in the water sample and match the color of the strip to the guide on the back of the bottle. I find that the color matching is accurate and will give you a good range of the chemistry levels in your pool or spa.

The drawback of the test strips is that you will not get an exact color match every time. So, it is open for user interpretation, and this can sometimes give you the wrong results. For instance, you may think the color indicates the Alkalinity is at 160 ppm, but it is at 120 ppm because you didn’t match the color correctly. Basically, you are only getting a ballpark reading with a test strip and not a spot-on reading that you would get with a Photometer tester, which I will cover later.

The Reagent Test Kits use a drop test, and when the reagent solution is entered into the water sample, a color change takes place. Taylor is the leading manufacturer of these reagent test kits, and you can also purchase a basic Pool Master Kit at your local pool store. The reagents can test for all the basic test factors like Chlorine, Free Chlorine, Total Chlorine, Bromine, Alkalinity, pH, Calcium Hardness, and CYA (Conditioner). These kits are easy to use and a great way to test your pool and spa water each week. The Taylor K-2005 and K-2006 are popular test kits.

The drawback of the reagent test kit is user error. You will get a false reading if you don’t add the correct number of drops. If the reagents are expired, you will also get a false reading. Like test strips, you match colors to get your reading, so if you are not good at distinguishing colors, you will have trouble reading the correct results.  But these are minor drawbacks, and as you gain experience with the Reagent Test Kits, you will get better at reading the correct results. Some popular test kits are the Taylor K-2005 and K-2006, which I use on my pool route.

Photometer Testers are gaining popularity, and they are the only test kit that will give you a spot-on reading of the test factors. The LaMotte Color Q 2X Pro7 & 2X Pro9 is a very popular photometer test kit, and the new Pool Lab 2.0 is also a great test kit. These kits operate when an electronic photometer is used to read the color spectrum of the reagent or tablet color in the water sample. Since the photometer can read the exact color of the water sample, it can give you an exact digital reading of the test factor. If you are doing a pH test, for example, it will give you the pH down to the exact level, like 7.5. This can’t be done with either the test strips or the reagent test kits. These are great for Commercial accounts or homeowners struggling with color matching.

The drawback with the photometer testers is the price point. Since they are more advanced, the price point is typically 3-4 times that of a premium reagent test kit. But if you are looking for the most accurate test results without having to guess at the actual reading, a photometer tester is right for you.

One of the most advanced Photometer Testers is the LaMotte Spin Touch Mobile, which does 10 test factors in one minute! The price point is close to $1,000 and each disk is $2.50 but it can do all of these tests in less than a minute and give you a digital readout of all of them: Free Chlorine (DPD) 0-15 ppm, Total Chlorine (DPD) 0-15 ppm, Bromine (DPD) 0-33 ppm, pH 6.3-8.6, Calcium Hardness 0-800 ppm, Total Alkalinity 0-250 ppm, Cyanuric Acid 5-150 ppm, Copper 0-3.0 ppm, Iron 0-3.0 ppm, Salt 0-6000 ppm, Phosphate 0-2000 ppb

Digital Testers can also be used to give you readings that are unavailable with test strips and reagent testers such as Salinity, TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) ORP, Temperature, pH as well as other factors. These are great and accurate testers and can expand the different test factors you can do in your pool and spa.
