Pool Skimmer Tips That Actually Work

A pool skimmer is the first line of defense for surface debris, and when it underperforms you feel it fast: leaves hover on top, bugs collect in corners, and the water looks “tired” even when chemistry is fine. Good skimming keeps debris from getting waterlogged and sinking, which also helps reduce bottom mess and the workload on your pool vacuum. Even on an infinity edge pool where builders sometimes skip skimmers for looks or because debris spills into a catch basin, a working skimmer can still play a vital role in day-to-day pool maintenance by keeping the surface cleaner between service visits.

If you want to improve pool skimmer suction, start with circulation. In an ideal world, water movement pushes floating debris toward the skimmer in a predictable pattern, but many pools have dead spots where returns don’t move the surface enough. Adjusting return jets can help create a clockwise or counterclockwise sweep that guides debris across the surface and into the skimmer throat. On rectangle pools, it can be more about pushing from one side toward the end where the skimmer sits. This “pool circulation” step is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the few free fixes that can noticeably improve surface skimming.

Next, optimize the system for flow. A dirty cartridge filter, DE filter, or sand filter can choke circulation and make the skimmer look lifeless. High filter pressure usually means less water moving, which means less pull at the skimmer. Cleaning cartridges on an appropriate schedule, backwashing when needed, and sizing equipment correctly can transform performance. Upgrading to a larger filter can also increase flow dramatically. Along with filtration, check the skimmer’s weir gate (the flap at the skimmer opening) or any brand-specific floating weir parts. When a weir is missing or stuck, debris can drift past the skimmer and even fall back into the pool when the pump shuts off.

Finally, look at the hidden skimmer killers: suction cleaners and low-speed variable speed pump settings. When a suction-side cleaner is connected at the skimmer or a side port, it shares suction with the skimmer and can reduce surface skimming power. It may also hold the weir gate open, letting debris spill back out when the system turns off. If you want better surface debris removal, consider supplementing the skimmer with a solar-powered surface cleaner (and use hose weights to keep hoses from blocking it), or add a PoolSkim device that mounts to a return and creates a secondary skimmer. These add-ons can be especially effective when baskets fill midweek, and they pair well with practical steps like emptying baskets, trimming nearby trees, and running an automatic cleaner to handle what inevitably sinks.
