How to Actually Find the Source of Algae in Your Pool

Algae in a swimming pool is not always a “bad chlorine” story, and treating it that way can waste time and money. Some pools rarely see a bloom, while others fight green dust or mustard algae all season. The first step in effective pool algae prevention is figuring out the source: is it being introduced constantly by the environment, or is it taking hold because water care fundamentals are failing? Wind-prone yards, heavy pollen seasons, and nearby trees can load a pool with organics that feed growth. Shady surfaces and wall seams also give algae a place to settle, especially when brushing is skipped.


A big clue is where the algae appears. If it keeps returning on steps, in a spa, along a deep-end corner, or behind ladders, you are likely dealing with low circulation “dead spots.” Those areas may not receive enough measurable free chlorine, even when the test at the surface looks fine. Poor mixing means sanitizer is not reaching the exact surfaces where algae attaches and grows. Return jet direction can help, but some pools have structural dead zones that need extra attention through longer pump runtime, better flow, and consistent physical agitation.

Filtration and circulation are the backbone of algae control. A clean, functioning filter helps remove fine particles and improves turnover so chlorine disperses evenly. DE grids with tears and worn cartridge elements reduce performance and can make chlorine readings misleading because the sanitizer is not being distributed well. For sand filters, correct backwashing matters: backwash only when pressure rises about 10 psi above the clean baseline, since over-backwashing can reduce efficiency. Seasonal runtime changes are also key; moving from winter to spring and summer often requires a significant increase in pump time to keep water moving and sanitized.

Chemistry adds another layer, especially the relationship between cyanuric acid (CYA) and free chlorine. If you have ever seen algae persist with “plenty” of chlorine, high CYA may be the reason. A practical rule is keeping free chlorine around 7.5% of the CYA level. When CYA climbs from heavy trichlor tablet use, chlorine becomes less effective, so the pool needs a higher free chlorine setpoint to stay algae-free. That is why a pool can read 10 ppm free chlorine and still struggle if CYA is extremely high. Testing CYA accurately, including dilution testing when needed, can solve the mystery fast.

Beyond fundamentals, there are optional “chlorine enhancers” that can slow or prevent blooms in problem pools. Enzymes and phosphate remover reduce algae’s available food, making growth harder. Borates, commonly targeted to about 50 ppm, act as a natural algistat, add noticeable water sparkle, and buffer pH; once added, they remain until water is replaced, so you mainly top off after dilution. No matter what you add, weekly brushing of walls, steps, and spas remains one of the most effective, low-cost algae prevention techniques because it breaks algae off surfaces so chlorine can finish the job.
