Bob Lowry: Should You Ever Add Copper to a Pool?
Copper shows up in pool conversations the same way every season: as “mineral technology,” “mineral systems,” or a copper ionizer that promises less chlorine and fewer problems. Products like PoolRx, Nature2, Frog systems, and even solar ionizers all revolve around adding copper to pool water chemistry. Copper can be a real algae prevention tool, and at higher levels it can suppress some bacteria, which is why it sounds like a shortcut for pool owners and pool service professionals. The catch is that clear water is not just about killing living organisms. A swimming pool is full of bather waste like sweat, urine, body oils, and sunscreen, and those contaminants must be oxidized, filtered, and managed with a stable sanitizer residual.
That is where copper gets over-credited. Copper does not oxidize contaminants, so even if it slows algae growth, it does nothing to break down sunscreen and organics that drive combined chlorine, odor, and dull water. Chlorine does two jobs at once: sanitation plus oxidation, which is why a “copper only” approach often ends with cloudy water and chemistry that feels impossible to balance. Another key limitation is speed. Pool safety depends on fast kill times to reduce bather-to-bather disease transmission, and copper is simply not quick enough as a primary sanitizer. Even when the EPA allows ionizers, it is with the condition that chlorine is also used, because a pool needs protection that remains active when swimmers immediately consume the available residual.
Copper also lives right on the edge of trouble because the effective range overlaps the staining range. The level where copper helps control algae and bacteria is close to the level where copper staining can appear on plaster, tile, and fittings. That is why manufacturers often pair copper with a sequestering agent or chelating agent to keep metal ions from depositing on surfaces. But sequestrants are organic molecules that break down from chlorine, other oxidizers, and sunlight. As they degrade, copper can come out of solution and leave stains, especially after superchlorination or repeated dosing. This is also why copper algaecide labels include strict directions and cautions, and why “a little extra for insurance” can backfire fast.
The most famous symptom, green hair, is another misunderstood sign of copper in the water. Chlorine is a bleach, not a dye, and it does not turn hair green. Green hair is typically copper deposition, often triggered when acidic trichlor tablets sit in a skimmer and attack copper heat exchangers or other metal components, releasing copper into the pool until it exceeds its saturation point. If staining happens, you have options short of draining and acid washing. Ascorbic acid or citric acid can lift metal stains from surfaces, but you still need to physically remove the metal from the water to prevent it from returning when chlorine is raised again. Metal-removal bags or cartridges placed in the skimmer or run through a separate pump loop can pull dissolved metals out over time, acting as a practical one-two punch: lift the stain, then capture the metal.
Long-term success means playing detective and finding the copper source. Common sources include copper algaecides, ionizers, corrosive low pH, trichlor use in skimmers, metals in fill water, and even erosion from excessive water velocity through metal-containing equipment. New pool surfaces can add another twist: some pebble finishes can contain iron-bearing rock, creating localized rust-colored spots when exposed to chlorine and water. The most reliable strategy remains simple and cost-effective: maintain the right chlorine level for your pool, use metals products cautiously, and treat copper as a specialized tool rather than a replacement for balanced, oxidation-capable pool water chemistry.
