"I have the Pool Blaster Max (the blue one). Love it. Got it through ebay and Amazon (had one for a few years and the battery went...bought a second one as soon as it went!) for a pretty good deal." "I have the rechargable Max. Use it more than my Pool Rover Jr. if there's no sticks twigs or such in the pool. And if so, I usually just dip that stuff out before firing up the Max. I use it a LOT in between times I actually really, really HAVE to vacuum. Get the little inside silt/liner bags to go with it too. It really helps capture some finer stuff. Highly recommended by me." Feeling like it would be better to drain the pool, fill it with dirt and lay grass over the money pit? You are not alone. I hear it all the time, "my pool pump is costing me a fortune in electricity!"  or, "I just spent $300 on chemicals at the pool store this month..." Or, "Nobody told me owning a pool would be so expensive!" So at least you are not alone. I've put together some tips that will save you a substantial amount of money on both your electric cost and your chemical costs. Tip #1 & 2: RUN YOUR POOL PUMP AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE I talk about running your pool just one cycle per day. There are a lot of things about a Salt Water Pool also referred to as a Salt System or a Salt Water Generator that fall into the category of a myth. Other things that are true are seen as false and some things that are myths are truths. confused yet? Sounds like the intro to "Lord of the Rings" in fact ;).  I will briefly touch on these and explain the truth about a Salt Water Pool. I will refer to a Salt Pool here as a Salt Water Generator (SWG). The first thing you need to know is that a SWG uses regular table salt - specifically made for your pool to remove any impurities. It is sold in 40 lbs. bags and labeled "pool salt." This is the only salt you want to add to your pool. All other types could stain the pool surface as some have additives. So stick with clearly labeled bags that say "Pool Salt." Myth: Salt Water Pools don't use chlorine The process is quite complex but the SWG will take the salt and convert it into chlorine. One of the questions I get asked all the time is what cleaner picks up debris the best. Leaves, dirt and other stuff that will fall into your pool can make your pool look uninviting. An automatic cleaner is a great way to keep your pool looking great each week. Here are the top five of 2014 in order of how much debris they can collect. Polaris 360 shown Number One: Polaris 280, 360, 380, 480 & 3900: The Polaris by Zodiac is still the best when it comes to debris. It can pick up stuff on the pool bottom that other cleaners just can't. The debris bag is also a super fine mesh and will trap dirt also. Most of the Polaris models require a separate booster pump except for the Polaris 360 pictured here.
