Some Tips on Bidding for a new Pool Service Account

Image
When you are first starting out in the business it is very easy to make mistakes and, in this article, I am going to share a few of the most common that I see. Even a simple mistake can cost you money and if you make multiple mistakes you can lose some service accounts or lose the bid on new accounts. Many mistakes can be made during the bidding process. You get a call to come out and estimate an account for service. You show up and meet the customer. You don’t land the account. Why would this happen? Here are some common mistakes: You were not polite and did not sell yourself properly. Always greet the customer with good manners and smile, “Hi Mr. Jones or Hello sir,” and then shake their hand. Make good eye contact and dress professionally. Maybe you talked to much. Or asked too many personal questions making the client feel uncomfortable. Or talked to much about yourself. You want to keep the conversation on the pool and your service rates. Drifting too much out

Aqua-Cel D.E. Filter Media in Water-Soluble 1 lbs. Bags: The Safest Way to Add D.E. to your Pool!

Image
Aqua-Cel DE Pool Filter Media is the safest way to add Diatomaceous Earth (DE), to your DE filter. It comes in a 12 lbs. bag with 12 water-soluble bags inside each weighing one pound. To recharge your DE filter, you would just take the water-soluble bag and drop it into the skimmer while the pool is running. The bag will dissolve in 40-60 seconds and you will not be exposed to any of the dust from the DE powder. The one drawback of a DE filter has always been the mess of adding DE to the filter. Not only is the bag of DE messy and dust gets everywhere, but when dry the dust is an inhalation hazard. It is also classified as an Industrial Carcinogen meaning that if you work in the pool industry and breathe in the DE dust, overtime you can get cancer or serious lung disease. For a homeowner you should also be concerned especially if you have pets or young children in the backyard while DE powder is being introduced into the pool skimmer. Aqua-Cel has come up with a ingenious way t

Aquabot Breeze SE

Image
The Aquabot Breeze SE which has now been on the market for about one and a half years now. I don’t normally do an update video on a robotic pool cleaner that I had previously reviewed but the Breeze Se deserves a second look.   It is loaded with features but is priced at the entry level price point of under $500. Below I will detail some of the features that make the Breeze SE a Top Pick for a robotic pool cleaner for your pool. The Breeze SE has a compact and well balanced design that is suitable for all pool surface types. The first thing that sets the Breeze SE apart is that it has top loading debris chambers that filter the pool water down to 2 microns. That is equivalent to the filtration of a D.E. Filter. The debris chamber is lined with a fine filter media that traps dirt, leaves and small particles down to 2 microns. It is an incredible filtration level for a cleaner priced under $500. Unlike the other Aquabot models in this price range, the Breeze SE features a

Why Being a Cheapskate with your Pool can Hurt you in the End - Tips on Dealing with Cheap Customers

Image
Everyone wants a good deal and it is a nice feeling when we save some money on a purchase or a service. But always looking for a good deal can sometimes hurt us in the end. I think the thinking that if it is not on sale or if it is not discounted I will look elsewhere has some major drawbacks. With your pool, being cheap can really hurt you and cost you more money in the long run. Owning a pool will cost you money. Simple as that. It is a big hole in the ground with water in it that needs constant upkeep and attention. During the season you will need to spend money on chemicals, equipment and on utilities such as electricity and water. If you are not willing to spend money on your pool, then the pool will turn green on you very quickly. A lot of people want to save money on their pool cost by running their pool for 2 or 3 hours per day. I am talking about full size 20,000-gallon pools. Yes, you will save on electricity, no doubt. But the water quality will suffer and

Precision 2.0 Professional Pool Vacuum One Year Later

Image
I have been using the Precision 2.0 on my pool route now or over a year and it has held up great during that time. It really speeds up my day out there and with the sand silt bag it picks up fine dirt and debris making vacuuming small pools and spas a breeze. If you service pools and are looking for a vacuum that will make your day easier and faster check out the Precision 2.0. One thing that I like about the cleaner is how well it has performed over the year. Being able to recharge the battery in my truck is also a plus. I get over 1 hour of cleaning time with each battery, so while one is in use the other is charging. The shell of the Precision is also very durable and so far no issues to report after one year of everyday use. The Precision is only for sale to pool service professionals and won't be available online. For more info on pricing and availability check with your local pool supply wholesaler. With that said, if you are a homeowner looking for a powerfu

Common Maintenance Errors with your Pool Filter

Image
One aspect of pool care that is often overlooked is the pool filter. This is actually one of the most important factors in your pool care and one of the main problems with water quality. If the filter is dirty or running poorly water quality will suffer. You will be adding loads of chemicals and running the pool long hours and still wonder why the water is cloudy. I think the pool filter also looks intimidating to the new pool owner and many just don’t feel comfortable cleaning and maintaining it. One of the first things I do when I get a new service account is to inspect and clean the pool filter. I think about 80% off all problems you will encounter with your pool care is filter related. So, if your pool has constant cloudy water, algae or the chemicals are not holding week to week the filter may be the issue. Interestingly I find that many pool builders skimp on the filter size when they install a pool. Really it can’t cost them more than $200-$300 more in the pool p
